Lore Context
This quest is the dramatic payoff for the Frostborn/Brann chain. Everything you’ve done since arriving at Frosthold, from earning Creteus’s trust to scanning the four temples to retrieving Norgannon’s Core, has drawn the attention of Loken’s iron dwarf forces. They’ve launched a full assault to prevent the keystone from reaching Brann Bronzebeard.
Creteus’s line about the Forge of Wills is significant. This is the same titan facility in Halls of Stone where Sjonnir the Ironshaper guards the corrupted forge. Loken seized it to produce the Stormforged army, which is why iron dwarves can seemingly spawn in endless numbers.
Yorg Stormheart’s battlefield appearance here is a deliberate setup. The Axemaster’s awe at his fighting prowess foreshadows the eventual reveal that “Yorg” is actually Muradin Bronzebeard, one of the greatest warriors in dwarven history, surviving under amnesia since Arthas claimed Frostmourne.
Creteus meets his end during or shortly after this battle. In the next quest (The Master Explorer), Creteus admits he cannot hold the iron dwarves for long and sends you to deliver the Core to Brann in the Engine of the Makers.
Brann later finds Creteus’s corpse overwhelmed by iron dwarves and eulogizes him as a good keeper who cared only about completing his task. After serving as a quest hub across five quests, the Lonesome Watcher’s vigil ends here.

Vikstone's War JournalThe moment my hand closed on the core I heard boots in the corridor, and under that, a long way off, the sound of a fight already in progress.

A Frostborn Axemaster came in at the run.
“Hail! I hate to rush you, but there’s an army of iron dwarves here to stop whatever you and Creteus are trying to do… we need to get out of here.”
He did not escort me out. He went first and stayed first, and everything that came at us in that tunnel went through him before it got anywhere near me.
The cave had filled behind us. Where the ice revenants had stood there were Stormforged Warmongers, and Frostborn holding the tunnel against them with axes in the dark.
“King Stormheart caught wind of the iron dwarves heading this way,” he said between swings, “and brought all the best warriors he could muster on such short notice.”
Outside was worse. Amplifiers and Decimators across the whole of the Foot Steppes, pressing a line that was not long enough for the ground it had to hold.
“Quickly, Creteus is to the west. King Stormheart is holding them off, but they have the advantage of numbers.”
I saw Yorg through the middle of it.
I had wondered where a frost dwarf king learned his trade. Watching him work, I stopped wondering and started counting. He fights the way a mountain dwarf fights, and better than most of those, and iron dwarves went at him in twos and threes and did not come back out.
“By the watchers, look at him fight.” The Axemaster had gone quiet beside me. “I’ve never seen a more vicious warrior… I’m glad to call him my king.”
Creteus was west of the line, untouched, with a battle going on around him that he did not appear to be part of.
“We’ll hold them off as long as we can,” the Axemaster said. “Do whatever you need to do quickly!”
I put the core in Creteus’s hands.
“I am pleased that you were able to reach the core before these abominations were. Someone is using the Forge of Wills to create this army… Ulduar is no longer safe.”
Creteus took the Core and said Ulduar was no longer safe, though he had no intention of leaving it, and the last thing he did was point Vikstone toward The Master Explorer.
