Quest Giver: Creteus — Foot Steppes, near the Engine of the Makers [40, 60]

Objective: Use Creteus’s Mobile Databank to investigate the Temple of Invention, Temple of Winter, Temple of Life, and Temple of Order.

Walkthrough

Creteus is troubled by news that Thorim’s seat of power is contested and wants to know the status of the other Keepers. He gives you a Mobile Databank, a floating mechanical orb that analyzes each temple when summoned at its center.

How the Databank Works

• Use the provided item to summon the databank. It follows you as a flying companion.
• At each temple, fly to the center of the circular platform and the databank will begin its analysis automatically after a moment.
• If it doesn’t trigger, try repositioning closer to the exact center. The activation area is precise.
• The databank flies around the temple during its scan, delivering dialogue about what it finds. You can follow it to hear everything, but quest credit registers once the analysis begins.
• You can use the databank while mounted. Fly directly to each temple center for speed.

Temple Locations

1. Temple of Invention [45, 49]

• Western part of the Terrace of the Makers.
• The databank reports the temple is intact, but its mechagnome guardians have been corrupted by an unknown source. Several attendants have been piled together. Watcher Mimir (Mimiron’s nickname among friends) is no longer present.

2. Temple of Winter [52, 56]

• Southern part of the Terrace of the Makers.
• The databank reports temple guardians are dead, killed by a fire-based entity (Loken’s fire giants). The cold weather patterns that once surrounded the temple have ceased. Watcher Hodir is no longer present.
• You may need to clear a few hostile mobs near the center before activating the databank.

3. Temple of Life [64, 47]

• On the Plain of Echoes, northeast of Camp Tunka’lo.
• The databank reports the temple is damaged beyond repair. Evidence of a significant battle; the opponent of Watcher Freya was estimated to be of similar size and strength. Guardians are gone and associated plant life is dead.

4. Temple of Order [53, 42]

• Northern part of the Terrace of the Makers.
• The databank reports the temple is intact with no signs of struggle. No guardians present. Watcher Tyr is no longer present.

After scanning all four, return to Creteus at [40, 60] to turn in.

Efficiency Tips

• Fly a loop through the Terrace of the Makers to hit Invention, Winter, and Order in sequence, then head east to the Temple of Life on the Plain of Echoes.
• Do not fly to the Temple of Storms. It’s Thorim’s temple and is unrelated to this quest. Multiple players have wasted time there.
• If the databank isn’t triggering, make sure you’re dismounted at the very center of the platform. Some need to be on foot, though others confirm it works while mounted.

Lore & Secrets

The Four Absent Keepers

Each temple tells the story of a Keeper who has been lost due to Loken‘s betrayal. Mimiron was murdered by Loken (made to look like a lab accident), though his mechagnome servants saved his spirit and built him a new mechanical body.

Hodir was captured after Loken’s fire giants slaughtered his frost giant guardians.

Freya fought a titanic battle against an opponent of equal power (likely Loken himself).

Tyr’s case is different: he left the Storm Peaks ages ago, long before Loken’s rebellion, and died fighting the proto-dragon Galakrond in what would become Tirisfal Glades, named “Tyr’s Fall” in his honor.

All four Keepers (except Tyr, who is dead) appear as bosses in the Ulduar raid. Mimiron, Hodir, and Freya were corrupted by Yogg-Saron and must be freed by defeating them. After liberation, each aids players in the final fight against the Old God.

Creteus’s Concern

Creteus opens by telling you outright that the core is not at the Engine of the Makers, and that he doubts you understand what you are asking for: “I am not sure why you seek it, and I am equally unsure if you truly know the purpose of that which you seek.” The four temples are the price of him reconsidering.

Creteus already knows something is wrong with Thorim (whose “seat of power is contested”), but has no information about the other watchers. The grim results from all four temples confirm the worst: the entire Keeper infrastructure of the Storm Peaks has collapsed. His completion dialogue acknowledges that “their absence spells dark times for all the lands of Azeroth.”

Easter Eggs

• The Mobile Databank is a floating, mechanical orb that hovers and scans its surroundings while delivering analytical dialogue. It is oddly similar to 343 Guilty Spark from the Halo franchise, the floating AI monitor that guides (and eventually betrays) the player through ancient alien facilities. The parallel is fitting: both are mechanical custodians investigating the state of ancient, abandoned installations built by godlike beings.

Cross-Expansion Connections

The Keepers After Ulduar

• WotLK (Ulduar): Hodir, Freya, and Mimiron are freed from Yogg-Saron’s corruption after the raid. Thorim is also freed.
• Legion: All four freed Keepers help defend Ulduar against the Burning Legion. Mimiron returns to the spotlight during the Hunter artifact questline for Titanstrike, and again in Patch 8.1.5 to help restore the spirit wolf Hati.
• Exploring Azeroth: Northrend: The Brothers Bronzebeard revisit the temples and report that since Hodir was freed, the cold-weather patterns around the Temple of Winter have resumed.

Tyr’s Legacy

• Legion: Tyr’s legacy becomes central to the Paladin class hall campaign. The Silver Hand reclaims his tomb in Tirisfal Glades, and Tyr’s Guard features heavily in the story.
• Dragonflight/The War Within: Tyr is a recurring figure in the titan-forged lore threads that run through modern WoW.
