I loved playing games since childhood, starting with the Super Nintendo, Game Boy, and N64. I eventually got into MMOs like Star Wars Galaxies, WoW, and EVE Online.

I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and grew up reading sci-fi and fantasy novels. In my guild, Trinity Exiles, we wrote fan-fiction megathreads on our forum based on our in-game characters from SWG. During medical school, I wrote freelance and have since published in medical journals with my colleagues. 

That love of storytelling eventually became The Shadow of the Lich, a novel set in Northrend during the war against the Lich King, co-written with Shawn French. Art by Christian DiBari, colors by Simon Gough.

I spent a wild decade in EVE Online from 2010 onward, fighting alliance wars and eventually joining the Pandemic Legion. I documented the propaganda and coalition politics that defined those conflicts. EVE felt less like a game and more like watching how people actually behave when the stakes feel real. And for many, it was a metagame of war plans and spy networks, in order to win at any cost.

Some of that documentation found its way into the historical record. Andrew Groen cited my work in Empires of EVE: Volume II, his history of the game’s great wars, in his accounts of the Northern Coalition’s war against the Drone Russian Federation and the Russian Civil War that followed. Those campaigns are where my EVE Online war stories begin.

I kept working on GamerTribute through residency, fellowship, and the early years of my practice. Outside of gaming, I treat patients, teach physiology, and train in martial arts. But this project never really let go of me.

I wanted to preserve what these games felt like when I played them.
