Most valuable ore

Titanium (Storm Peaks, Icecrown)

Yields all four Crystallized elements. The endgame earner.

The monopoly herbs

Adder's Tongue & Firethorn

Zone-exclusive supply keeps prices high all expansion.

What this guide covers
  • The best gold farming and material spots in every Northrend zone, organized by level bracket (68-72, 73-77, 77-80)
  • Cross-zone gathering circuits that keep nodes and elementals respawning while you travel
  • Wintergrasp farming: all Eternal types in one zone, gas clouds, and Fish Feast fishing
  • Market timing windows, so you sell when prices peak instead of when your bags are full
  • Gathering routes mapped from the air, the kind you only learn by flying them

Introduction

The fastest gold in Northrend is the gold you are already earning. Questing through the main storylines pays well on its own, and the moment you hit level 80, leftover quest XP converts straight into coin.

Save a starting zone for max level and you can turn thousands of banked quests into raw gold in an afternoon. Everything else on this page, the farming spots, the gathering circuits, the market timing, sits on top of that foundation. These routes and circuits below come from a lot of time spent gathering across Northrend, mostly from the air, with node tracking up and the map slowly turning into muscle memory. These are the proven routes flown and refined over a full expansion.

Where a spot earned its reputation, you’ll see it called out. This is the gold companion to the larger archive.

If you want the full quest-by-quest path through Northrend, the lore, and the screenshot galleries, that lives in the WotLK Classic Northrend Leveling Guide. This page assumes you already know where you’re going and focuses on filling your bags along the way.

For the detailed maps, minimaps, and per-spot breakdowns, each zone name below links to its full zone guide.

Every route in this atlas was flown for a reason, and no single route fits every character. Your level, your professions, your flying access, and whether your faction holds Wintergrasp should decide where the next hour goes. Best Gold Farming & XP Grinding Spots

Northrend’s farming value climbs with the zones. Early zones give you cheap, accessible materials with low-level requirements. The endgame zones lock the most valuable ore and herbs behind level barriers that thin out the competition. The brackets below match the leveling flow, so you can farm as you climb.

Click on each Zone guide page for more detailed farming locations, minimaps, and profession-specific optimization strategies.

Early Northrend Farming (68-72)

Borean Tundra Gold Guide

  • Eternal Fire/Water dual-farming – Blistering Pool area (47.2, 16.0) for simultaneous Crystallized Fire + Water farming
  • Fire Leaf/Fire Seed – Firethorn plants are exclusive to Borean Tundra, keeping prices high all expansion
  • Steam Cloud + Elemental farming – Geyser Fields (72.6, 27.2) combines gas cloud harvesting with Steam Rager elementals
  • Mammoth farming circuits – Multiple spawn points for Chunk o’ Mammoth, Arctic Fur, and Borean Leather
  • AoE grinding hotspots – Rhino farming south of Amber Ledge (45.3, 46.3), Winterfin clam farming (37.0, 15.0)
  • Wintergrasp connection – Loop from Borean Tundra to southeastern Wintergrasp to Cauldron of Flames (83.6, 69.0) for Eternal Fire farming when your faction controls it

Howling Fjord Gold Guide

  • Shoveltusk zone-wide farming – Ancient Lift area (44.0, 60.0) and west of Skorn for premium caster food (Great Feast component)
  • Early Eternal Life access – Thornvine Creeper southeast of Camp Winterhoof (53.4, 16.6) for Darkmoon Card crafting rush
  • AoE leveling + gold combination – Lion Seal farming southeast of Explorers’ League Outpost (78.5, 74.2) for fast XP and Chilled Meat
  • Alternative zone advantage – Less competition than Borean Tundra for the same tier of materials
  • Max-level quest conversion – Return at 80 to convert untapped quest XP into raw gold
  • Multi-zone herb circuits – Deadnettle bonus herbs connecting to Grizzly Hills and Dragonblight routes

Mid-Level Goldmaking (73-77)

Dragonblight Gold Guide

  • Multi-zone gas cloud circuit hub – Arctic cloud motes zone-wide, rare Cinder cloud motes at (36.7, 31.7) east of Wintergrasp border. Alternate this point with Wintergrasp farming
  • Jormungar farming – Northern Dragonblight (52.8, 25.8) for Worm Meat, Arctic Fur, and Jormungar Scales from Jormungar Tunneler, which climb in value during the ICC phase
  • AoE XP grinding hotspot – Wintergarde Mausoleum crypt (85.8, 50.0) for Dreadbone Construct, ideal for Paladins
  • Saronite Deposit Ore mining – Mid-expansion bridge ore with Crystallized Earth + Shadow for prospecting
  • Eternal Shadow/Water farming – Deathbringer Revenant (74.8, 22.0), Ice Revenant at Mirror of Dawn (68.0, 53.4)
  • Strategic circuit anchor – Central hub connecting Borean Tundra → Sholazar Basin → Wintergrasp farming routes

Grizzly Hills Gold Guide

  • Highland Mustang AoE pack farming – Three major pack locations at (56.2, 32.6), (62.8, 32.8), and (59.2, 26.6) for Arctic Fur (9-10% chance per 9-horse pack)
  • Glacial Salmon Schools – Essential Fish Feast component with high raid demand throughout expansion
  • Multi-zone herb circuits – Deadnettle bonus herbs connecting to Zul’Drak border (Talandra’s Rose) and Dragonblight routes
  • Eternal Air/Earth dual farming – Lightning Sentry elementals (75.8, 56.0), Runic Battle/War at (65.4, 23.0) and (76.8, 59.2)

Zul’Drak Gold Guide

  • Talandra’s Rose – Primary spawning zone for this herb, with Deadnettle bonus from secondary picks
  • Saronite Deposit Ore prospecting – Bridge-tier ore that feeds directly into the Saronite shuffle profits
  • Triple Eternal farming – Eternal Water at Altar of Rhunok (51.8, 46.8), Eternal Life east of Argent Stand (44.8, 63.2), Eternal Air at Altar of Quetz’lun (72.6, 57.8)
  • Frostweave Cloth farming, with the Heavy Frostweave Bandage manual as a useful First Aid side benefit – Heavy humanoid populations with Northern Cloth Scavenging to increase drop rates
  • Links to Storm Peaks and Icecrown for Talandra’s Rose + Lichbloom routes

Sholazar Basin Gold Guide

  • Adder’s Tongue – Only grows in the open world in Sholazar Basin (also drops inside Drak’Tharon Keep, Gundrak, and Ulduar). Single-zone open-world supply keeps prices high.
  • Multi-gas cloud circuit – High-density Steam + rare Cinder clouds, an essential stop in profitable Engineering routes

  • Quad-Eternal farming efficiency – Eternal Life around River’s Heart, Eternal Earth at Lifeblood Pillar (67.6, 59.2), Eternal Air/Water along western border (25.4, 38.0)
  • AoE grinding – Fast-respawning gorilla clusters are ideal for area damage classes
  • Combine Engineering, skinning, herbalism, and elemental farming in circuits

Elite Endgame Farming (77-80)

The Storm Peaks Gold Guide

  • Titanium Ore: Most valuable ore in WotLK, yields all four Crystallized element types, required for Titansteel Bar crafting
  • Eternal Fire dual-location farming: Frostfield Lake (70.4, 60.6) and caves north of Camp Tunka’lo (62.4, 41.6) for Cardinal Ruby transmute demand
  • Sons of Hodir warning: Complete the Sons of Hodir intro chain before farming near Dun Niffelem, or else you can get wtfpwned by level 80 elites
  • Multi-Eternal routes: Eternal Air, Eternal Water, Eternal Earth, and Eternal Fire are all farmable across overlapping spawn points in one circuit
  • Jormungar farming: Two major spawn points at (57.0, 63.4) and cave (47.0, 55.0) for ICC-phase valuable Jormungar Scales
  • Lichbloom and Icethorn: Endgame flask herbs with high-level zone barriers keeping competition low

Icecrown Gold Guide

  • Abundant Lichbloom and Icethorn spawns for max flask production
  • Large amount of Titanium Ore deposits – Most valuable ore with all four Crystallized element types, reduced elite competition
  • AoE XP + gold grinding – Aldur’thar Gate (49.8, 33.4) and Onslaught Harbor (10.4, 44.9) for cloth and raw gold
  • Frostweave Cloth farming – Converted Heroes in the Valley of Fallen Heroes (50, 41), between Aldur’thar and the Ironwall Rampart, is the densest Frostweave camp in Northrend: groups of 7-8 with fast respawns, ideal for AoE. Dark Zealots and Dark Ritualists in the northeast (63.4, 22.4) are a quieter alternative. Northern Cloth Scavenging roughly doubles yield.
  • Arctic Cloud circuit – Gas cloud access connecting to Storm Peaks and Dragonblight elite routes

Crafting professions like Jewelcrafting, Alchemy, and Inscription can be very profitable, and every one of them eats the materials on this list. This atlas covers the repeatable open-world farming that feeds those markets. Recipe economics, cooldowns, and realm-specific demand deserve their own analysis, so they are deliberately out of scope here.

Why a loop beats camping one spot

The travel time between zones is the respawn window, so each spot is ready again when you circle back.

Single-zone farming has a ceiling. Nodes and elementals respawn on timers, so once you’ve cleared a spot you’re standing around waiting. Circuits solve that.

Chain a handful of zones together and the travel time between them is exactly the respawn window, so you arrive back at the first spot just as it repopulates. This is the difference between a farming session that feels like work and one that feels like flying laps, which, on a netherwing drake with a tracking addon up, is precisely what it was.

Wintergrasp and Route Planning

Your gathering circuits change based on whether your faction controls Wintergrasp.

  • Wintergrasp controlled: Route through Wintergrasp whenever possible. The Cauldron of Flames is one of the best Eternal Fire sources in Northrend, and herb and ore nodes throughout the zone are uncontested while your faction holds it.
  • Wintergrasp lost: Skip it entirely and shift to Storm Peaks and Icecrown circuits. Both zones have enough material density to sustain a full farming session without Wintergrasp.
  • Battle timing: Check the Wintergrasp battle schedule before starting a long circuit. Starting a run 15 minutes before a battle means you risk getting interrupted or locked out of the zone mid-route.

Requirements: Zapthrottle Mote Extractor (must be obtained from TBC), from the quest The Zapthrottle Mote Extractor in Zangarmarsh. You need this before any gas cloud farming works.

General Steam Cloud Route (accessible): Borean Tundra (Geyser Fields) → Sholazar Basin → Dragonblight → back.

Steam Clouds across these zones yield Crystallized Fire and Water, and the travel time between zones gives the clouds room to respawn. No faction control or level 80 required, so this is the loop you can run while leveling.

Primary route file → WotLK Classic gas cloud farming circuit: Dragonblight to Borean Tundra Geyser Fields to Sholazar Basin loop with coordinates

Cinder Cloud Route (higher value): Wintergrasp (Cauldron of Flames, when your faction controls it) → Dragonblight border (36.7, 31.7) → Storm Peaks → Icecrown.

The Cinder Clouds, the valuable ones for Engineers, spawn only around Wintergrasp’s Cauldron of Flames, the Dragonblight border, and Sholazar’s Savage Thicket. The Storm Peaks and Icecrown legs add Arctic Clouds and endgame materials to the lap. When Wintergrasp isn’t available, the Dragonblight border at (36.7, 31.7) is the reliable Cinder Cloud fallback.

Control State Focus Primary Spots (with coords) Route/Integration Notes
When Faction Controlled — Wintergrasp as the Anchor
Controlled All-Eternal Hub Eternal Fire: Cauldron of Flames [83.6, 69.0]
Eternal Water, Eternal Life, Eternal Earth, Eternal Air, Eternal Shadow: various Wintergrasp spawn points
Park at the keep and rotate Cauldron of Flames → elemental clusters; use flying to chain packs efficiently.
Gas Cloud Supremacy Rare Cinder Cloud motes: Fire Lake (Wintergrasp) Best Engineering income route; prioritize Cinder Cloud laps between Cauldron of Flames and Fire Lake.
Circuit Integration Dragonblight border hand-off: [36.7, 31.7] Extend Cinder Cloud laps by linking Wintergrasp → Dragonblight border [36.7, 31.7]; repeat for continuous farming.
When NOT Controlled — Use Backup Circuits
Not Controlled Borean Tundra’s Alternatives Geyser Fields [72.6, 27.2] — Steam Cloud + elementals Quick swap from Wintergrasp: run Steam Cloud circuit while waiting for battle window or control flip.
Storm Peaks’ Alternatives Frostfield Lake and nearby cave systems — Eternal Fire Pivot north: chain Frostfield Lake → cave loops for steady Eternal Fire while WG is locked.
Elite Zone Focus Storm Peaks → Icecrown premium material circuits Abandon WG entirely and run high-value routes across Storm Peaks then Icecrown until control returns.

Multi-zone file → WotLK Classic cross-zone farming routes: Elite Herb Route and Jormungar Loop through Northrend with coordinates

Route Primary Locations / Path Materials / Targets Strategy / Notes
Jormungar Farming Network
Jormungar Loop Dragonblight [52.8, 25.8] → Storm Peaks [57.0, 63.4] → Cave [47.0, 55.0] Worm Meat (Great Feast), Arctic Fur, Jormungar Scales (ICC phase value ↑) Rotate spots by competition/respawn; bounce when density drops to keep kills/min high.
High-End Herb Circuits
Elite Herb Route Zul’Drak (Talandra’s Rose) → The Storm Peaks (Lichbloom/Icethorn) → Icecrown (valuable spawns) Talandra’s Rose, Lichbloom, Icethorn, Icecrown rares Run in that order for uptime; pivot to Icecrown nodes when Peaks is contested.
Sholazar Monopoly Sholazar Basin focus (Adder’s Tongue) integrated with a multi-zone herb pass Adder’s Tongue (open-world exclusive to Sholazar) Anchor a full lap in Sholazar, then branch to the Elite Herb Route if nodes thin out.
Deadnettle Optimization Grizzly Hills → Zul’Drak → Dragonblight Deadnettle + incidental herbs/materials along the chain String hubs for minimal flight time; favor ridge lines and riverbanks for node clusters.
AoE Grinding Progression
Leveling Route Borean Tundra rhinos [45.3, 46.3] → Howling Fjord seals [78.5, 74.2] → Dragonblight crypts [85.8, 50.0] Thick skins/leathers, vendor trash, fast respawns Chain-pull dense packs; rotate on respawn timers; hearth to nearest hub for repairs/mail.
Elite Route (80) Sholazar gorillas [60.6, 70.3] → Icecrown Aldur’thar Gate [49.8, 33.4] → Onslaught Harbor [10.4, 44.9] High-density packs, cloth/leathers, solid raw gold/hour Best at 80 with strong AoE; swap spots when competition spikes to maintain kills/min.
Window Item / Material Why It Spikes Notes / Actions
Early Expansion Priorities (Weeks 1–4)
Weeks 1–4 Cobalt Ore Massive profession leveling demand Farm/flip early while supply is thin; unload in bulk before market stabilizes.
Eternal Life Darkmoon Card crafting creates huge demand spikes Prioritize herb → Ink flows; list during Darkmoon Faire turn-in weeks for a premium.
Fire Leaf/Fire Seed Zone-exclusive Borean Tundra herbs allow higher pricing Control Borean circuits; post in small stacks for casual buyers.
Sustained Demand (Through the Expansion)
All Phases Arctic Fur Conversion system ensures consistent value Skinning routes stay profitable; convert on vendor when AH dips.
Eternal Fire Cardinal Ruby transmutes maintain 24/7 demand Bank during lows; sell before raid nights and weekend peaks.
Titanium Ore Sustained high-end crafting demand Prospect, stockpile, or flip; anchor of late-game ore markets.
Phase-Specific Value (Later Phases)
ICC Phase Jormungar Scale Significant value increase for crafted BoE items Farm ahead of patch hype; drip-list to avoid undercuts.
All Later Phases Gas Cloud Materials Remain profitable across phases Prioritize Cinder/Steam laps; pair Engineering + Mining for maximum yield.

Profession Integration Tips
  • Tracking macros: If you’re running Herbalism + Mining, set up a macro to toggle between Find Herbs and Find Minerals. This is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement for dual-gathering circuits.
  • Northern Cloth Scavenging: Tailors get bonus Frostweave from any Northrend humanoid. If you’re running a farming alt through troll camps in Zul’Drak or Scourge camps in Icecrown, Tailoring as a second profession adds passive income to every pull.
  • Arctic Fur from Crystalsong Forest: Often overlooked. Azure Manabeast and Azure Spellweaver near the Violet Stand have a 2-3% Arctic Fur drop rate. Spawns are limited, so it’s not a primary farm, but it’s worth clearing if you’re passing through.
  • Heavy Borean Leather exchange: From patch 3.3.0, you can trade 10 Heavy Borean Leather for 1 Arctic Fur. The NPC is Braeg Stoutbeard, the Fur and Leather Trader outside Legendary Leathers in the Magus Commerce Exchange in Dalaran. This puts a hard floor under Heavy Borean Leather prices.

Wintergrasp as a Farming Hub

When your faction controls Wintergrasp, it’s the most complete single-zone farming destination in Northrend.

  • All Eternal types are farmable in one zone.
  • Cinder Cloud spawns for Engineers are here alongside other gas cloud types.
  • Wintergrasp fishing provides all components for Fish Feast in a single location.
  • From Wintergrasp you can loop directly into Storm Peaks or Icecrown for endgame materials without backtracking.

Endgame Material Circuit

For max-level characters focused on the highest-value materials: Storm Peaks (Titanium Ore, Eternal Fire) → Icecrown (Lichbloom, Icethorn, Frostweave Cloth) → Wintergrasp (all Eternals, Fish Feast fishing) when controlled. This is the route that generates the most gold per hour once you’re geared for elite mobs in all three zones.

Check the battle timer first

Battles run on a 3-hour schedule. Starting a long run near a battle means getting locked out mid-route.

Wintergrasp is the only zone in Northrend where all Eternal types are farmable in one place. When your faction controls it, the zone is a fixed stop on any serious gathering circuit. Early in the expansion, demand for Eternals is massive. Pre-raid BiS crafting, transmutes, and Darkmoon Card production all consume them simultaneously.

The catch is access. Your faction must hold Wintergrasp for the best farming here. The zone itself stays open, and control gates Tempest Revenant spawns, the Stone Keeper’s Shard buff, Vault of Archavon access, and how contested your circuit will be.

Battles run on a rolling 3-hour schedule, with the queue opening 15 minutes beforehand. Starting a circuit 15 minutes before a battle means you’ll lose access mid-run. Expect competition even during your faction’s control window. Weekly quests bring PvP players into the zone alongside farmers.

In original Wrath this was an open-world brawl on a 2.5 hour cycle, and getting caught mid-circuit when the horns sounded meant flying out with half your bags full.

Other Wintergrasp Benefits

  • Stone Keeper’s Shards: While your faction controls Wintergrasp (Essence of Wintergrasp buff), bosses in all Northrend dungeons and raids drop Stone Keeper’s Shards for the controlling faction.
  • Vault of Archavon: Only the controlling faction can enter this raid. Bosses drop PvP Gladiator gear and Tier armor set pieces.

Alliance vs Horde sentiment

Top Locations

Eternal Fire Farming

Location: The Cauldron of Flames (Fire Lake) spawn Point (83.6, 69) at the southeastern edge of Wintergrasp

  • Fire Lake elementals – Fast respawn rates from Flame Revenant for Crystallized Fire
  • Cinder Cloud – Harvest these motes at the Fire Lake for additional Crystallized Fire
  • Tight mob clustering works well for AoE classes (Mages, Boomkins, Death Knights, Paladins)
  • The weekly quest sends players here periodically, so expect interruptions during reset week

Eternal Life Farming

Location: In The Steppe of Life at western Wintergrasp at (10.0, 61.6)

  • Kill both Mature Lasher and Living Lasher for Crystallized Life
  • Herbalists can extract additional Crystallized Life and herbs from their corpses

Eternal Water Farming

Location: Several spawn points along bodies of water throughout central Wintergrasp

Eternal Earth Farming

Location: Several spawn points also along bodies of water and northeastern Wintergrasp at (63.8, 29.8)

  • Kill and mine Earthbound Revenant elementals for Crystallized Earth.
  • Kill Chilled Earth Elemental mobs for Crystallized Earth
  • They share the same spawn points
  • Mining Earthbound Revenant corpses increases Earth yield by roughly 10%

Eternal Air Farming

Location: Several spawn points along southern Wintergrasp

  • Kill Whispering Wind elementals for Crystallized Air
  • Kill Tempest Revenant elementals for Crystallized Air
  • They share the same spawn points
  • Tempest Revenants only appear when your faction controls the zone

Eternal Shadow Farming

Location: Spawn point in western Wintergrasp at (15, 53)

  • Kill Shadow Revenant elementals for Crystallized Shadow
  • Kill Wandering Shadow elementals for Crystallized Shadow
  • They share the same spawn point in the west
  • Shadow Revenants have a notably high drop rate

Gas Cloud Harvesting (Engineering)
  • Cinder Cloud Spawns – Limited spawn locations make these extremely valuable at the Cauldron of Flames (Fire Lake) at (83.6, 69)
  • The Cauldron sits near the Dragonblight border, connecting naturally into the broader gas cloud circuit
  • Requires Zapthrottle Mote Extractor from TBC

Fishing for Fish Feast
  • Fishing here is extremely valuable, as long as you are sure not to get ganked while standing with your hands on your fishing pole
  • There are no “fishing pools.” Just stand in a spot and fish
  • Wintergrasp is widely considered the best fishing spot in WotLK Classic for farming Glacial Salmon, Musselback Sculpin, and Nettlefish because all three can be caught there in open water. These are the key ingredients for the high-demand consumable, Fish Feast
  • In addition to the main fish, you have a chance to fish up Giant Darkwater Clam, which can contain valuable items like Siren’s Tear and Northsea Pearl
  • The Dangerously Delicious fishing daily quest from Marcia Chase in Dalaran asks you to catch Terrorfish (these are caught alongside the other fish)

Frost Lotus Node Spawns
  • While other Northrend herbalism nodes have a chance to yield Frost Lotus as a bonus item, dedicated Frost Lotus nodes themselves only spawn in the Wintergrasp zone in the open world, as well as the Conservatory of Life within the Ulduar raid
  • These dedicated nodes require 450 Herbalism to gather.

Wintergrasp Farming Maps & Coordinates

Flame Revenant and Cinder Cloud motes at the Cauldron of Flames (83.6, 69) in southeastern Wintergrasp provide the best Eternal Fire farming in Northrend. Revenants have 100% Crystallized Fire drop rate with fast respawns. Requires faction control. PvP competition can be expected.

Crystallized Fire from Flame Revenants in Wintergrasp

Water Revenant and Glacial Spirit elementals are along the central Wintergrasp water bodies, dropping Crystallized Water for Eternal Water. Multiple spawn points throughout the zone. Note: Glacial Spirits are immune to frost spells.

Water Revenant and Glacial Spirit for Crystallized Water in Wintergrasp

Earthbound Revenant and Chilled Earth Elemental mobs at water bodies and northeastern Wintergrasp (63.8, 29.8) drop Crystallized Earth. Mine Earthbound Revenant for 10% increased yield. Share spawn points for efficient farming.

Chilled Earth Elemental for Crystallized Earth in Wintergrasp

Whispering Wind and Tempest Revenant in southern Wintergrasp drop Crystallized Air for Eternal Air. Tempest Revenants only spawn when your faction controls the zone. They share spawn points.

Whispering Wind for Crystallized Air in Wintergrasp

Wandering Shadow and Shadow Revenant in western Wintergrasp (15, 53) drop Crystallized Shadow for Eternal Shadow. Shadow Revenants have very high drop rates. Share the same spawn point.

Wandering Shadow for Crystallized Shadow in Wintergrasp

Mature Lasher and Living Lasher mobs in western Wintergrasp at (10.0, 61.6) are the primary source of Crystallized Life in this zone, which can be turned into Eternal Life. Herbalists can also extract more Crystallized Life and other herbs from their corpses.

What to Farm When the Best Route Is Crowded

A perfect farm is worthless when five other players are already working it (or lots of bots). The circuits on this page assume contested airspace. When a route is camped, switch to a comparable material or a parallel zone instead of waiting on respawns someone else is claiming.

Borean Tundra starter routes Howling Fjord, the same bracket with lighter traffic Early materials at full pace

A single incomplete lap with empty nodes has always been my signal to move. I never spent half an hour proving a camp was overcrowded.

Vikstone’s 60-Minute Route Test

A guide can hand you good materials and efficient geography. It cannot know your realm’s economy, your competition, or whether the ore you gather actually sells. The routes on this page earned their place by being flown and refined, and yours should earn their place the same way. Test a route before committing an evening to it.

Vikstone's 60-Minute Route Test
  1. Start with empty bags and repaired gear.
  2. Write down your gold total and the exact start time.
  3. Fly the route for 30 or 60 uninterrupted minutes.
  4. Record everything: gathered materials, raw coin, vendor trash, and repair costs.
  5. Value materials at what they actually sell for, never at the highest current listing.
  6. Note the time lost to travel, competition, and waiting on respawns.
  7. Fly the same route at a different time of day and compare.
  8. Test one alternative zone before you commit your evenings to a circuit.
Net gold per hour = raw coin + realistic sold-material value − repairs, deposits, and Auction House cuts

A material listed high but rarely purchased is a number in a tooltip, and tooltips do not pay for Cold Weather Flying.

Best AddOns

The right addons turn gathering from aimless wandering into a tight, repeatable circuit. This is the gold-farming setup, separate from the general leveling addons.

  1. GatherMate2 – The one every farmer agrees on. It records every herb, ore, and gas cloud you gather and pins it to your map and minimap, so a zone slowly becomes a complete map of its nodes. Pair it with GatherMate2_Data to import every spawn location instantly instead of building the database yourself. If you gather and don’t run this, you’re farming blind.
  2. Routes – Extends GatherMate2 by drawing an optimized path between all the nodes in a zone. This is the addon version of the circuits mapped out on this page: feed it your node data and it plots the shortest loop, so you spend your time gathering instead of backtracking.
  3. Auctionator – The auction house addon for everyone who doesn’t want a second job. Fast price checks, easy posting, simple undercut handling. The community consensus is that it does 90% of what TSM does with about 5% of the learning curve. Start here. Move to TradeSkillMaster only if you’re flipping hundreds of auctions a day.
  4. LootAppraiser Reloaded – Shows the value of everything you loot in real time and tracks your gold per hour. This is how you find out whether a farm is actually worth your time or just feels productive. Tells you which routes to keep and which to drop. This is a continuation of the original LootAppraiser by ProfitzTV.
  5. Postal – Automates the mailbox. One click to collect everything, and bulk-sending to your bank alt becomes painless. Sounds minor until you’re moving stacks of mats between characters every session, then it’s the addon you’d never uninstall.

Northrend Gold Farming FAQ

What is the best overall gold farming zone in WotLK Classic?

Wintergrasp when your faction holds it, since all six Eternals, Cinder Clouds, Frost Lotus nodes, and Fish Feast fishing sit in one zone. When it is lost, the Storm Peaks into Icecrown circuit is the strongest fallback.

Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord for Cobalt while leveling. At 80, Icecrown and the Storm Peaks hold the densest Titanium and Saronite, and Wintergrasp’s veins go uncontested while your faction holds it.

Sholazar Basin for Adder’s Tongue, the Storm Peaks and Icecrown for Lichbloom and Icethorn, and Wintergrasp for dedicated Frost Lotus nodes at 450 Herbalism.

Yes. Questing pays well on its own, Cobalt and Goldclover sell to profession levelers all expansion, and banking a starter zone converts thousands of leftover quest XP into raw gold once you hit 80.

Yes. Gas clouds require the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor from the TBC quest The Zapthrottle Mote Extractor in Zangarmarsh, plus Cold Weather Flying to reach them.

No fixed number survives contact with your realm’s population, phase, and competition. Run the 60-Minute Route Test above and trust your own data over anyone’s headline figure.
