Introduction
Borean Tundra is one of two entries into Northrend, and it’s the more underrated of the two for gold. Everyone passes through it while leveling, which means the farming spots are right there from the start, no level 80 requirement, no faction grind, no heavy investment.
That makes it the ideal zone for alt-farming and for stockpiling early in a fresh expansion when prices are at their highest.
What sets it apart from the other early zones is exclusivity. Firethorn plants, the source of Fire Leaf and Fire Seed, grow nowhere else in the game, so their price holds all expansion long.
The Blistering Pool lets you farm Crystallized Fire and Water at the same time. And the Geyser Fields stack gas clouds, Air elementals, and those exclusive herbs in one corner of the map. Whether you’re leveling through or coming back at 80 to convert banked quests into gold, there’s a lot of money to be made here.

Main Farming Locations
As Northrend’s starting zone, Borean Tundra gives you immediate access to valuable materials with no level 80 requirement and no heavy investment, which makes it good for alt-farming and stockpiling early. The exclusive herbs and elementals/clouds keep it profitable all expansion long.
Go to the Blistering Pool and farm Crystallized Fire and Water at the same time. Ten of each combine into Eternal Fire and Eternal Water, and early-expansion demand keeps both selling high. Everything below is the detail.
Main Locations
Eternal Fire & Water Dual-Farming
- Location: Near the Blistering Pool (47.2, 16), in northern Borean Tundra.
- The Fire and Water elementals are located at (47.2, 16).
- Go west of Bor’gorok Outpost, northwest of Fizzcrank Airstrip. The fire elementals burn at the Charred Rise, and the water elementals hold the adjacent Blistering Pool.
- Water and Air elementals are denser at (45.3, 12.3).
- Kill Raging Boiler for Crystallized Fire.
- Kill Boiling Spirit and Scalder for Crystallized Water.
- Why It’s Valuable:
- Early WotLK demand for these materials is massive due to pre-raid BiS crafting, transmutes, and Darkmoon Card production.
- Eternal Fire is used to craft Deathchill Cloak (Caster Pre-BiS).
- Eternal Fire is also useful for Spellweave Crafting, used in Ulduar gear and beyond.
- You can farm both material types simultaneously for maximum efficiency.
- Available immediately upon entering Northrend.
Eternal Air Elementals and Steam Cloud Farming (Engineering) for Fire and Water
- Location: Geyser Fields cloud motes at (72.6, 27.2), in southeast Borean Tundra.
- Kill the Steam Rager elementals here also to get Crystallized Air.
- Kill Enraged Tempest elementals (45.3, 12.3) across the zone to the northwest to get Crystallized Air, so the two spots form a natural in-zone loop.
- Materials Extracted from Steam Clouds: Crystallized Fire + Crystallized Water.
- Requirements: Zapthrottle Mote Extractor (obtained from the quest The Zapthrottle Mote Extractor! in TBC, an Engineering quest).
- Your strategy is to monitor steam clouds while farming elementals for extra materials.
Pair With Wintergrasp – The Cauldron of Flames for Eternal Fire
This deserves mentioning. Wintergrasp is the best overall location in Northrend to farm these elementals. Because Borean Tundra is where most players start the leveling process, it’s important that this zone is part of the rotation.
- Location: The Cauldron of Flames Spawn Point (83.6, 69) at the southeastern edge of Wintergrasp.
- Flame Revenant and lesser elemental mobs respawn quickly. Revenants have a 100% drop rate for Crystallized items.
- Lots of Cinder Cloud motes also spawn here.
- Requires faction control and has PvP competition.
- Quick Alternate Spot: Cinder Cloud motes in Dragonblight (≈ 36.7, 31.7) drop Crystallized Fire if you have the Zapthrottle Extractor, perfect for alternating farming routes.
Zone-Exclusive Herbs: Fire Leaf & Fire Seed
- Source: Firethorn plants.
- Fire Leaf (and Fire Seed) are harvested from Firethorn plants found only in the Geyser Fields of Borean Tundra and require a Herbalism skill 360.
- These herbs remain in steady demand, being valuable for Inscription and Alchemy.
Mammoth Farming for Borean Leather, Arctic Fur, and Chunk o’ Mammoth
- Location: Various spawn points in northern and central Borean Tundra: northeast of Amber Ledge (52.8, 28.8), southward from Fizzcrank Airstrip (54.8, 24.8), and north of the Geyser Fields (64.6, 14). Scourged Mammoth are located along west (77.6, 25) and south (83.6, 34) of the Temple City of En’kilah.
- Kill Wooly Mammoth, Wooly Mammoth Bull, and Mammoth Calf mobs for Chunk o’ Mammoth, skin for Borean Leather, and a chance to get Arctic Fur.
- Wooly Mammoth and Mammoth Calfs are located at the third spawn point north of the Geyser Fields (64.6, 14).
- Kill and skin Scourged Mammoth for the same items, west (77.6, 25) and south (83.6, 34) of the Temple City of En’kilah.
- Chunk o’ Mammoth – Used to make Mammoth Meal, Spiced Mammoth Treats, and Great Feast. Incredibly valuable throughout the game.
- Arctic Fur and Borean Leather – Consistent value, for high-end Leatherworking
Best AoE Grinding Spots for XP and Gold-Making
Rhinos South of Amber Ledge
- Location: South of Amber Ledge at (45.3, 46.3) – primary spot. Additional spawn point (45.2, 71.6).
- Numerous rhinos such as the Wooly Rhino Bull and Wooly Rhino Calf mobs are located at (45.3, 46.3) and can be pulled en masse for AoE grinding.
- Great for massive XP grinding early on. You can obtain fur, skin for Borean Leather, and get Rhino meat, which helps even at level 80 for substantial gold farming.
- DO note that killing these animals gets you a 3-minute debuff that makes the D.E.H.T.A. hostile to you (Animal Blood).
Winterfin Village and Caverns (Northwestern part of Borean Tundra)
- Location: The murloc area at Winterfin Village, located at (37, 15). Kill the murlocs and loot the small clams scattered across the trench, the village, and the caverns for Winterfin Clams. Trade 100 of them to Ahlurglgr, the Clam Vendor at Winterfin Retreat, for a Siren’s Tear, which sells for a lot of gold on the Auction House. You need to complete the murloc suit quest chain that begins with Learning to Communicate before he will deal with you. Darkwater Clams drop separately from Winterfin Oracles and nearby gorlocs, and each has a small chance to contain a Siren’s Tear or Northsea Pearl. AoE classes can achieve high clam rates.
- Winterfin Warrior also drops Darkwater Clams, which have a low chance to contain Siren’s Tear, selling for a lot of gold on the auction house. AoE classes can achieve high clam farming rates.
Profession Pairings
- Herbalism + Mining: Firethorn plants (Fire Leaf and Fire Seed) are exclusive to Borean Tundra, making this the only zone where you can farm them. Goldclover and Tiger Lily fill out herb runs alongside Cobalt veins, which sell high during the early profession-leveling rush.
- Engineering + Herbalism or Mining: Gas cloud spawns in Borean Tundra connect into the main Crystallized element circuit. Engineers should pair this with whichever gathering profession they’re running.
- Skinning: Mammoth and rhino mobs are dense in Borean Tundra. Borean Leather holds a price floor because Leatherworkers craft 6 raw into 1 Heavy Borean Leather, and from patch 3.3.0, 10 Heavy trade for 1 Arctic Fur at Braeg Stoutbeard in Dalaran, an effective 60:1 conversion.
Market Timing
- Weeks 1-3 after launch: This is the highest-price window for everything. Players are rushing professions, buying transmute materials, and crafting pre-raid BiS gear. Sell Cobalt Ore and herbs during this window, not after.
- Eternal Fire: Demand never drops. Cardinal Ruby transmutes, flask crafting, and pre-raid gear recipes all require it.
- Fire Leaf + Fire Seed: Zone-exclusive and always in limited supply. Price holds because no other zone produces them.
- Darkmoon Cards: The early Darkmoon Card crafting wave creates massive demand for Eternal Life and herbs simultaneously. If you’re farming herbs in the first few weeks, this is where a lot of your buyer demand comes from.
Gathering Circuit
Borean Tundra anchors the western steam cloud loop:
Borean Tundra (Geyser Fields) → Sholazar Basin → Dragonblight → back to Borean Tundra. The Steam Clouds across these zones yield Crystallized Fire and Water, and the travel time between zones lets them respawn before you return. No faction control of Wintergrasp needed, so it runs fine while you level.

Preparation
- Craft your Zapthrottle Mote Extractor (TBC Engineering quest) before flying north.
- Set up a tracking macro to toggle between Find Herbs and Find Minerals.
- Use alts in the zone for early stockpiling and cash flow.
Farming Maps & Coordinates
Kill murlocs at Winterfin Village (37, 15) and loot ground clams for Winterfin Clams. Trade 100 to Ahlurglgr at Winterfin Retreat for a Siren’s Tear once the quest chain beginning with Learning to Communicate is complete. Darkwater Clams drop separately and may contain a Siren’s Tear. Also great for AoE XP grinding.
Dense spawn of Wooly Rhino Bull and Wooly Rhino Calf at (45.3, 46.3) and (45.2, 71.6) south of Amber Ledge. Excellent for AoE XP grinding, Borean Leather farming, Arctic Fur chance, and Rhino Meat collection.
Wooly Mammoth, Wooly Mammoth Bull, and Mammoth Calf spawn at (52.8, 28.8) northeast of Amber Ledge, (54.8, 24.8) south of Fizzcrank Airstrip, and (64.6, 14) north of Geyser Fields. Farm for Chunk o’ Mammoth, Borean Leather, and Arctic Fur.
Scourged Mammoth located west (77.6, 25) and south (83.6, 34) of Temple City of En’kilah. Farm for Chunk o’ Mammoth (used in Mammoth Meal, Spiced Mammoth Treats, Great Feast), Arctic Fur, and Borean Leather.
Steam Rager at Geyser Fields (72.6, 27.2) drops Crystallized Air (turn 10 into Eternal Air). Farm these elementals while extracting Crystallized Fire and Crystallized Water from nearby steam clouds using Zapthrottle Mote Extractor.
