Defending Wyrmrest Temple

Quest 16 of 16 in the Wyrmrest Temple Chain (Finale) Daily Quest
Both Factions • Dragonblight • Level 74 • Wyrmrest Temple
Mount a Wyrmrest Defender and slay 3 Azure Dragons, 5 Azure Drakes, and destabilize the Azure Dragonshrine.
Lord Devrestrasz on the middle level of Wyrmrest Temple [59, 54]. Dismount before speaking to a Wyrmrest Defender on the east or west terrace. Your drake has 5 abilities: Flame Breath (spam this, works while moving), Immolate (DoT, may bug on Drakes), Renew (10% HP heal, use on cooldown), Speed Boost, and Destabilize (channel at the shrine). Important: Fly to the purple beam at the Azure Dragonshrine at [55, 66] and press Destabilize once. Do not move or spam the button during the 5-second channel. Tag low-HP enemies already being fought by friendly NPC drakes for easy kill credit. If your drake dies, you slow-fall safely and can mount a new one. Right-click the vehicle buff to dismount before turning in. Awards 250 Wyrmrest Accord reputation daily. Achievement: Rapid Defense (under 3 minutes, solo).
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Every destroyed ley line anchor, every murdered mage hunter captain, every stolen thread of power Vikstone had traced across western Dragonblight ended here: riding a red drake. Devrestrasz asked if he'd come back tomorrow. "I'll be here," Vikstone said.

“Emboldened by the overabundance of magic now flowing through the Azure Dragonshrine, the blue dragonflight has dared to attack Wyrmrest Temple itself! I ask that you ride one of our defenders into battle to slay their dragons and drakes, and to attack the eruption of ley line energies at the dragonshrine itself in order to destabilize it. Outside on the east and west terraces are wyrmrest defenders. Speak with one to ride it into battle.

Without your help, Vikstone, we will surely lose.”

-Lord Devrestrasz

Objective

LEVEL

74

Requires level

71

Lord Devrestrasz at Wyrmrest Temple has asked you to slay 3 Azure Dragons, slay 5 Azure Drakes, and to destabilize the Azure Dragonshrine while riding a Wyrmrest Defender into battle.

Mount a Wyrmrest Defender:
Walk out to the balcony near Lord Afrasastrasz.
Speak to one of the Wyrmrest Defender dragons on either side to mount.
Kill Azure Drakes and Dragons:
Azure Drakes (smaller mobs):
Use Flame Breath (Ability 1) and Immolate (Ability 2). Tag them with Immolate and move on to the next one if you’re trying to save time.
These drakes can often be found flying around Wyrmrest Temple.
Azure Dragons (larger mobs):
Focus your attacks with Flame Breath (Ability 1) and Immolate (Ability 2). Dragons require multiple hits to kill.
Renew Your Drake:
Use Renew (Ability 3) whenever your drake’s health drops below 60%.
If your drake dies, you’ll slow fall to the ground. Return to the middle level to remount and continue.
Destabilize the Azure Dragonshrine:
Fly to 55.5, 66 (Azure Dragonshrine).
Descend to the base of the purple beam.
Use Ability 5: Destabilize the Azure Dragonshrine. It’s a 5-second channel, so don’t move.
Lord Devrestrasz on the middle level of Wyrmrest Temple [59, 54]. Dismount before speaking to a Wyrmrest Defender on the east or west terrace.

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Lord Devrestrasz <Commander of Wyrmrest Temple Defenses> — middle level of Wyrmrest Temple [~59, 54]

Turn-in: Lord Devrestrasz (same NPC)

Objective: Slay 3 Azure Dragons, slay 5 Azure Drakes, and destabilize the Azure Dragonshrine while riding a Wyrmrest Defender into battle.

Quick Facts

  • Type: Daily (repeatable), Vehicle Combat
  • Achievement: Rapid Defense — Complete the quest in under 3 minutes while not in a group
  • Prerequisites: Completing Report to Lord Devrestrasz (quest 15). Some sources report that the Rifle the Bodies chain from Wintergarde Keep may also be required.
  • Chain Position: 16th and final quest in the ley line investigation chain. The chain that began with A Strange Device at Moonrest Gardens ends here, with you directly fighting the threat you spent 15 quests uncovering.

Walkthrough

Accepting the Quest

Devrestrasz’s quest text lays out the situation using the exact intelligence you gathered: “Emboldened by the overabundance of magic now flowing through the Azure Dragonshrine, the blue dragonflight has dared to attack Wyrmrest Temple itself!”

He asks you to ride one of the temple’s defenders into battle: “Outside on the east and west terraces are wyrmrest defenders. Speak with one to ride it into battle. Without your help, we will surely lose.”

Mounting Up

  • Walk out onto the balcony in the direction Devrestrasz faces. Wyrmrest Defenders (red drakes) are stationed on both the east and west terraces of the middle level.
  • Speak to either defender to mount. It does not matter which you choose, though experienced players sometimes pick whichever doesn’t already have an Azure Dragon hovering right above it.
  • You must be dismounted from your own mount before speaking to a Defender. If you interact while mounted, the dialogue option won’t appear.

Wyrmrest Defender Abilities

Your drake has a 5-ability action bar:

  • Ability 1 — Flame Breath: Main ranged attack. Can be cast while moving. Spam this. Your primary damage source.
  • Ability 2 — Immolate: DoT (damage over time), roughly 25k over 9 seconds. Apply to targets then move on. Known bug in WotLK Classic: Immolate may return “invalid target” on Azure Drakes (the smaller mobs). If this happens, rely on Flame Breath alone. Works correctly on Azure Dragons (larger mobs).
  • Ability 3 — Renew: Heals 10% HP every 3 seconds for 15 seconds, on a 20-second cooldown. Use as soon as you take any damage. The short gap between HoT expiration and cooldown reset means near-permanent uptime.
  • Ability 4 — Speed Boost: Burst of movement speed. Use on cooldown for efficiency. Essential for the Rapid Defense achievement.
  • Ability 5 — Destabilize Azure Dragonshrine: 5-second channel. Only usable at the shrine. Fly into the purple beam at [~55, 66] and press once. Do not move or spam the button. It’s channeled; any movement cancels it. Wait for the cooldown to appear on the ability icon to confirm it completed.

Combat Strategy

Standard Approach (No Achievement Pressure):

  1. Mount up and engage any Azure Drakes/Dragons near the temple. Friendly NPC drakes are fighting the blues around Wyrmrest, and you can claim credit for kills by landing even minimal damage on enemies they’re already fighting.
  2. Head southwest toward the Azure Dragonshrine at [~55, 66], identifiable by the massive purple beam of ley line energy shooting into the sky. Kill enemies along the way.
  3. Fly into the beam at ground level and channel Destabilize (ability 5). Hold still for the full 5 seconds.
  4. Clean up any remaining kills on the return flight to the temple.
  5. Return to Devrestrasz on the middle level. Right-click your vehicle frame or the vehicle buff to dismount, then turn in.

Key Combat Tips:

  • Azure Drakes (smaller): Die quickly. One Flame Breath + Immolate (if working) is usually enough. Move on to the next target.
  • Azure Dragons (larger): Require 4-5 Flame Breath hits plus Immolate. Keep Renew running during these fights.
  • You can cast while moving. This is critical for efficiency. Never stop to fight; always be heading toward your next objective while attacking.
  • Friendly NPC drakes are your allies. They fight the blues around the temple and deal significant damage. If you spot an Azure Dragon on low HP being attacked by friendlies, tag it with one Flame Breath for free credit.
  • If your drake dies, you will slow fall to the ground safely. Return to the middle level and mount a new Defender to continue.
  • A Wyrmrest Protector may be standing on top of Devrestrasz when you return. Click carefully to target the quest giver, not the guard.

Wyrmrest Defender RP Whispers

Your drake is a sentient being, not just a vehicle. During the fight, the Wyrmrest Defender will whisper you with various RP lines:

  • On mounting: “We’ve been expecting you, <name>. Now we have the upper hand.” / “With you and I working together, this battle will be over in no time.” / “I’ve never seen anything like this before. I’m glad that you’re here.”
  • On kills: “Nice one, kid.” / “Another blue down. We make a great team!”
  • On Malygos: “Malygos has clearly gone insane.”
  • When low HP: “I need to heal! We should get out of here. I need to heal!”
  • Encouragement: “Just hang on. We’ll get through this.”

Note: In some WotLK Classic versions, the RP whisper system may be bugged, and the Defender may not speak at all. This is a known issue; the dialogue exists in the game data, but doesn’t always trigger.

Achievement: Rapid Defense

Complete this quest in under 3 minutes while solo (not in a group). This is the Rapid Defense achievement.

Achievement Strategy:

  • Enable achievement tracking. Shift-click the achievement in your achievement panel to enable tracking. This starts a visible timer when you accept the quest. No add-on needed.
  • The timer starts when you accept the quest, not when you mount. Position yourself as close to the Defender as possible before accepting.
  • The timer includes the turn-in. You must click “Complete Quest” on Devrestrasz within the time limit.
  • Do it during off-peak hours. Competition for kills during busy times can make the timer impossible.
  • Use Speed Boost (ability 4) immediately on mounting, then again on cooldown.
  • Prioritize kill-stealing from NPCs. The friendly drakes around the temple are constantly fighting blues. One Flame Breath on a low-HP target counts as your kill.
  • Head straight for the shrine while killing drakes/dragons along the way. Don’t circle around looking for mobs.
  • Destabilize immediately on arrival at the purple beam at [~55, 66]. Then finish kills on the return trip.
  • Don’t chase distant mobs. Stay on the direct line between the temple and the shrine.

Lore Context

This daily quest is the direct result of everything the ley line investigation uncovered.

Devrestrasz’s briefing text connects back to the entire chain: the blue dragonflight destroyed a ley line anchor (the focus devices you investigated at Moonrest Gardens and along the coast), redirected that power to the Azure Dragonshrine (what the mage hunters were doing at every ley line node you visited), and are now using that supercharged energy to attack Wyrmrest Temple itself (the intelligence you delivered to Alexstrasza in Informing the Queen).

Every daily run re-enacts the defense you made possible by bringing this intelligence to the Dragon Queen.

Devrestrasz’s completion text is worth reading: “Incredible! Let me just say that I continue to be amazed by what you younger races seem capable of. We are indebted to you. Will you come back and help us again tomorrow?”

It mirrors Ceristrasz’s gratitude at the Ruby Dragonshrine and Alexstrasza’s “I have known you since before you were born.” The dragons are learning to see mortals as partners, not just subjects.

Name History: The quest giver was originally named Lord Afrasastrasz. He was renamed to Lord Devrestrasz in a July 2021 hotfix. Many older guides, some database sites, and even the quest’s own description text in certain clients still reference the old name. It’s the same NPC and the same quest.

Cross-Expansion Connection

The daily quest’s vehicle combat foreshadows the climax of the entire Nexus War storyline. The Eye of Eternity raid against Malygos features a Phase 3 where all players mount red drakes provided by Alexstrasza, using a similar (but more complex) ability set.

Players who master Defending Wyrmrest Temple are effectively training for the final confrontation with Malygos. The Aces High! daily at Coldarra provides even more direct practice with the raid drake abilities.

Lord Devrestrasz continues commanding Wyrmrest’s defenses in Cataclysm during the Dragon Soul raid, where he rallies the Wyrmrest Accord against Deathwing’s twilight forces outside the temple.

The 250 Wyrmrest Accord reputation from this daily is a significant and consistent source for reaching Exalted, which unlocks the Reins of the Red Drake mount, among other rewards.

Combined with dungeon championing via the Wyrmrest Accord tabard, this daily is a cornerstone of the reputation grind.

Warrior IconVikstone's War Journal

“Emboldened by the overabundance of magic now flowing through the Azure Dragonshrine, the blue dragonflight has dared to attack Wyrmrest Temple itself.”

Vikstone Portrait Act 1
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

The magic I had traced from Moonrest Gardens to the Glittering Strand to Indu’le Village, the power stolen from a dozen destroyed ley line nexuses. All of it flowed into the blue dragons below.

“I ask that you ride one of our defenders into battle to slay their dragons and drakes, and to attack the eruption of ley line energies at the dragonshrine itself in order to destabilize it.” He gestured toward the terrace. “Outside are wyrmrest defenders. Speak with one to ride it into battle. Without your help, we will surely lose.”

The Wyrmrest Defender was a red drake, smaller than the great wyrms but built for war. When I mounted, the creature turned its head to regard me.

We launched from the terrace and the world fell away beneath us. The drake moved through the sky with confidence I was borrowing, and I was merely the hand that guided the hunt.

The Azure Drakes came first, smaller and faster, crackling with stolen magic. The Defender’s flames caught them mid-dive, sent them spiraling earthward trailing smoke and screams.

Then the Azure Dragons. These were larger and they couldn’t quite believe a mortal was challenging them.

The Defender banked hard, flame breath scorching across azure scales. One dragon broke formation, wounded. Another dove at us from above and met my mount’s claws. The third tried to flee toward the shrine and we pursued, bringing it down over the wastes.

The Azure Dragonshrine was a column of ley energy erupting from its heart. The Defender understood what needed to happen. We dove together, flame meeting magic, and the eruption destabilized in a cascade of arcane discharge that lit up the sky.

When I returned to the terrace, Lord Devrestrasz was waiting.

“Incredible. Let me just say that I continue to be amazed by what you younger races seem capable of. We are indebted to you. Will you come back and help us again tomorrow?”

The ley line power was disrupted, not destroyed. The blue dragons would regroup.

“I’ll be here,” I said.

Dragonblight was not finished with Vikstone, since somebody at Wyrmrest still wanted The Liquid Fire of Elune.
