I need you to use it to investigate what’s up there. It appears that the device works both ways so you shouldn’t have to jump off. I expect that once you teleport to the top of the surge needle, there will be some sort of apparatus on it to observe.
You should be able to use the teleporter from anywhere within the gardens.”

Report back to Archmage Modera. She identifies what you saw as a projection of the Arcanomicon and explains that the blue dragonflight has been using it to locate and destroy ley line “anchors” to redirect magical power back to the Nexus.
She then asks a critical question: why is their path of destruction leading east when the Nexus is to the west?
This mystery drives the next quest, The Focus on the Beach.

Lore Context
The Arcanomicon is one of the most significant artifacts in blue dragonflight lore. It’s a comprehensive map of every ley line intersection on Azeroth, originally gifted to Malygos by the titan Norgannon, Keeper of Celestial Magics and Lore.
The blue dragons continuously updated and revised the map during Malygos’s millennia-long seclusion after Deathwing nearly destroyed his flight. Now that Malygos has recovered (and gone mad in a different way), he’s weaponizing the Arcanomicon to systematically dismantle Azeroth’s ley line network and funnel all arcane power to the Nexus.
The surge needles at places like Moonrest Gardens are his tools for doing this, and the fact that they’re projecting the Arcanomicon here means the mage hunters are actively using it to plan their next targets.
Before Malygos began redirecting them, all of Azeroth’s ley lines led to a single location beneath Karazhan. The Kirin Tor would eventually spend years reversing the damage Malygos caused, restoring the ley lines to their former state.
Easter Egg
The name “Arcanomicon” is a reference to the Necronomicon, the fictional book of dark magic from H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Blizzard frequently draws on Lovecraft’s work throughout WoW, most notably with the Old Gods (C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, N’Zoth) whose designs are heavily inspired by Lovecraftian cosmic horror.

Comforting.
I returned to the Gardens, found the teleporter’s activation point among the ruins, and triggered the device. The world lurched. One moment I stood on shattered marble; the next, I was somewhere else entirely.
The platform floated high above the devastation. Wind cut through me, sharp and thin at this altitude.
A projection hung in the air before me and lines of arcane light traced patterns across an invisible sphere, nodes pulsing where the lines intersected. Dozens of them. No, hundreds. A web of power spanning what could only be the entire world.
I memorized what I could and activated the teleporter again. The ground met my boots with jarring solidity.
Modera’s reaction, when I described what I’d seen, was immediate.
“What you’re describing… that’s a projection of the Arcanomicon.” She paused long enough for the name to settle. “The Arcanomicon is a map of all of the magical ley line intersections in the world.” The blue dragonflight has been using it to find and destroy ley line ‘anchors’ to send the magical power back to the Nexus.”
A map of every ley line, every nexus of arcane power on Azeroth, cataloged and targeted.
“The question is,” she said, her projection’s composure restored, “why is the path of destruction leading east when it should be heading west instead?”
Modera wanted to know why, with the answer somewhere in The Focus on the Beach east of the Gardens where ley lines met at a point that should not exist.
