Objective: Kill Captain Emmy Malin at the Ley Line Focus on the Glittering Strand, loot the Ley Line Focus Control Ring, and use it on the Ley Line Focus.

Walkthrough

Travel to the Glittering Strand

• From Stars’ Rest, head south past Moonrest Gardens to the beach. The Ley Line Focus and Captain Emmy Malin are at approximately [27, 65]. The fastest route from Stars’ Rest is to go straight south and drop off the cliff edge down to the beach.

Kill Captain Emmy Malin

• Captain Emmy Malin is a human mage standing near the Ley Line Focus structure on the beach. She uses Frostbolt (single-target frost damage with a movement slow) and Frost Nova (AoE root). She’s not particularly tough, but melee classes should be ready to break the Frost Nova root.
• She respawns quickly (roughly 30 seconds to a minute), so don’t linger after looting her. If you’re slow to use the focus, she may respawn on top of you.

Loot the Ring

• Loot the Ley Line Focus Control Ring from her corpse.
• Known display issue: The ring sometimes does not appear in the loot window. If you don’t see it, check your inventory anyway. It looks like a baby blue and white ring icon with a glowing aura. The item should be in your bags after looting.

Use the Ring on the Focus

• Stand near the Ley Line Focus structure (the arch-like object near where the captain was standing) and use the ring from your inventory. The focus magically imprints information onto you, completing the quest objective.
• Don’t forget this step before heading back. If you return to Stars’ Rest without using the ring, you’ll have to come all the way back.

Return to Stars’ Rest

• Report to the Image of Archmage Modera. She finds it troubling that the mage hunters aren’t just redirecting ley line power; they’re actively changing it somehow. The investigation deepens with the follow-up quest Atop the Woodlands.

Bonus Quest: A Letter for Home

• Captain Malin also drops Captain Malin’s Letter, which starts A Letter for Home. This is one of WotLK’s most quietly devastating side stories. The letter, hidden in the lining of Emmy’s robes, is addressed to her father. It reads: she was forced into Malygos’s service under threat that her family would be killed. She was ashamed, but had been secretly sabotaging the blue dragonflight from the inside. The letter ends with “I love you, Daddy! Em.”
• You deliver the letter to Commander Saia Azuresteel at Stars’ Rest (this is the quest that Azuresteel actually handles, not the ley line chain). The commander’s response is gutting: “Oh no… and we sent you down there to kill her, didn’t we?” She promises to forward the letter to Emmy’s father, Archmage Malin, in Stormwind City.
• A few days after completing the quest, you’ll receive an in-game mail from Archmage Malin thanking you for finding the letter and vowing to avenge his daughter. Players who leveled through Classic WoW may recognize Archmage Malin as the quest giver outside the Wizard’s Sanctum in Stormwind’s Mage Quarter, where he sends you to Arathi Highlands to recover his master Archmage Trelane’s belongings. His daughter’s fate adds unexpected weight to a familiar low-level NPC.

Lore Context

This quest continues the investigation into what the blue dragonflight is doing with the redirected ley line energy from Moonrest Gardens. Modera’s concern escalates here: it’s not just redirection. The energy is being altered in some way.

The chain eventually leads to the Azure Dragonshrine and ultimately to Wyrmrest Temple, the seat of the Wyrmrest Accord.

Captain Emmy Malin’s story is a small but effective example of the Nexus War’s human cost. She wasn’t a willing servant of Malygos. She was a Stormwind mage, the daughter of an archmage, coerced into service.

Her death at the player’s hands, at the Kirin Tor’s behest, raises uncomfortable questions about the collateral damage of war, even a righteous one.

Horde Equivalent

• Horde players receive The Focus on the Beach (Horde) and kill Lieutenant Ta’zinni at a different ley line focus location. The Horde version has its own letter drop leading to A Letter for Home (Horde), delivered to Overlord Agmar at Agmar’s Hammer.
