Walkthrough

The Harpoon Operation Manual is inside the Utgarde Catacombs. To find the entrance:

1. In Wyrmskull Village, locate the bridge over the worg pit at approximately [57, 53]
2. Cross the bridge and take a RIGHT
3. Follow the path UPHILL to the catacombs entrance at [56, 49]

Inside the catacombs:

1. Navigate to the T-intersection
2. Turn LEFT
3. The manual is on the ground at approximately [59, 55], near a small firepit at the feet of Ares the Oathbound

Return to Guard Captain Zorek in Valgarde to complete the quest.

Efficiency: Catacomb Quest Combo

The Utgarde Catacombs contain multiple quest objectives. Grab these before entering:

• The Path to Payback (this quest) — Manual at T-intersection, LEFT path
• The Human League — Find Pulroy in the worg pit below the bridge
• Zedd’s Probably Dead — Find Zedd near Pulroy
• The Depths of Depravity — Collect 10 Wyrmskull Tablets throughout the catacombs (requires completing earlier Explorers’ League quests)
• The Ring of Judgement — T-intersection, RIGHT path
• The Shining Light — Accept from Ares the Oathbound at the manual’s location (timed quest; 10-minute buff makes undead non-hostile)

Note: The Shining Light grants a 10-minute buff where undead cannot attack you. If doing The Depths of Depravity simultaneously, accept The Shining Light first to make tablet collection much easier.

Story Context

Guard Captain Zorek explains the situation:

“Two weeks ago our chief engineer got his hands on a vrykul harpoon gun—the same type of gun that the vrykul use to take down our ships. By studying that gun he managed to put together a comprehensive operation manual.”

“Unfortunately he was abducted and taken north of here to Wyrmskull Village. We eventually did find him, but near death and without the manual. His dying words indicated that the manual was lost in the Utgarde Catacombs, located at the northwest end of Wyrmskull. Get me that manual!”

Upon completion, Zorek discovers crucial intelligence:

“<Zorek flips through the manual.>”

“Hrm, interesting… According to the manual, the vrykul have a special tool that allows them to control the harpoon guns with deadly accuracy. It looks a bit like the wheel of one of our ships. Furthermore, it’s portable and seems to plug into the harpoon guns like a key.”

This discovery sets up a chain where you’ll eventually turn the vrykul’s own weapons against them.

Chain Payoff: Turning Their Weapons Against Them

This seemingly simple fetch quest initiates one of Howling Fjord’s most satisfying quest chains:

1. The Path to Payback — Recover the manual (this quest)
2. Locating the Mechanism — Kill vrykul for a control mechanism
3. Meet Lieutenant Icehammer… — Coordinate with Alliance forces
4. Drop It then Rock It! — Deploy the mechanism
5. Harpoon Master Yavus — Eliminate the vrykul harpoon expert
6. It Goes to 11… — Commandeer a vrykul harpoon and rain destruction on Wyrmskull Village
7. Let’s Go Surfing Now — Harpoon yourself back to Valgarde in spectacular fashion

The climax at “It Goes to 11…” lets you man a hijacked vrykul harpoon cannon and destroy their longhouse, dockhouse, and storage facility while shooting down Dragonflayer Defenders. It’s poetic justice for all those Alliance ships they’ve sunk.

Easter Egg: Spinal Tap Reference

The quest It Goes to 11… references the famous scene from the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. In the film, guitarist Nigel Tufnel proudly shows off amplifiers whose volume knobs go to 11 instead of the standard 10, explaining “It’s one louder.” The phrase “up to eleven” has entered popular culture to mean exceeding normal limits. In this case, you’re cranking vrykul destructive power to 11 — against them.
