“They’re keepin’ Daegarn locked up in a cage at the large fightin’ ring nearby. From what I’ve gathered, the Dragonflayers bring out their prisoners to battle against their most powerful gladiators. They dump the losers in the basement where Scourge necromancers turn ’em into ghoulies! It’s horrifying!
But first things first! The tablets are strewn about all across this dungeon. Let’s get those recovered before you go off tryin’ to be a hero.”
-Glorenfeld
Glorenfeld at the Utgarde Catacombs wants you to collect 10 Wyrmskull Tablets.
Quest Giver: Glorenfeld at the Utgarde Catacombs
Objective: Collect 10 Wyrmskull Tablets from the Utgarde Catacombs.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
The Wyrmskull Tablets are scattered throughout the Utgarde Catacombs on the ground. Glorenfeld’s advice says it all: “Check every nook and cranny!”
Where to look:
The tablets are static objects, not mob drops. Simply click to collect. You need 10 total, and there are plenty spawned throughout the catacombs, you shouldn’t need to wait for respawns.
Efficiency Tips
Story Context
Before sending you on a rescue mission, Glorenfeld prioritizes the archaeological evidence:
“They’re keepin’ Daegarn locked up in a cage at the large fightin’ ring nearby. From what I’ve gathered, the Dragonflayers bring out their prisoners to battle against their most powerful gladiators. They dump the losers in the basement where Scourge necromancers turn ’em into ghoulies! It’s horrifying!”
“But first things first! The tablets are strewn about all across this dungeon. Let’s get those recovered before you go off tryin’ to be a hero.”
The professional detachment is very dwarven; the mission (recovering artifacts) comes before personal rescue, even with a colleague’s life at stake. The completion text confirms the priorities:
“You’ve done well, mate. Now that we’ve secured the tablets we can try and save Daegarn’s life and recover the cipher that will help us decode the meaning behind these ancient relics!”
The Dragonflayer Gladiatorial Pits: Glorenfeld reveals the grim purpose of the catacombs. The Dragonflayer clan operates fighting pits where prisoners are forced to battle vrykul gladiators. Losers don’t just die – their bodies are taken to the basement where Scourge necromancers raise them as undead. This explains the undead presence in the catacombs: they’re reanimated gladiatorial victims.
Lore Context: The Wyrmskull Tablets
The tablets you’re collecting are ancient vrykul inscriptions that will ultimately reveal one of WoW’s most significant lore revelations: humans are descended from vrykul.
The Explorers’ League chain culminates in discoveries made at Nifflevar, where translated tablet contents and spirit visions reveal:
The cipher hidden in Daegarn’s beard (yes, really—“Dwarves hide things in their beards all the time!”) is the key to unlocking this revelation.
Cross-Expansion Connections
The vrykul-human ancestry revealed through this chain has echoes throughout later expansions:

Vikstone's War JournalGlorenfeld knew more than he’d shared at first.

“They’re keepin’ Daegarn locked up in a cage at the large fightin’ ring nearby.” His face twisted with disgust. “From what I’ve gathered, the Dragonflayers bring out their prisoners to battle against their most powerful gladiators. And the losers? They dump ’em in the basement where Scourge necromancers turn ’em into ghoulies.”
Gladiator pits, prisoners forced to fight for vrykul entertainment. And the dead rising to serve in undeath.
I’d seen similar operations in the Eastern Kingdoms. The Scourge never wasted a corpse.
“But first things first,” Glorenfeld said. “The tablets are strewn about all across this dungeon. Let’s get those recovered before you go off tryin’ to be a hero.”
He was right. Knowledge first, heroics second. If Daegarn died and we lost both the cipher and the tablets, everything would be for nothing.
The Wyrmskull Tablets lay scattered throughout the catacombs; some lay partly buried in debris and others had been kicked aside by passing guards who didn’t know or care what they’d found.
I gathered them, working through the tunnels while the sounds of the fighting ring echoed from deeper below.
Cheering. Screaming. Then silence.
Another match ended, another corpse for the necromancers.
Glorenfeld took the tablets eagerly. “You’ve done well, mate. Now we can try and save Daegarn’s life and recover the cipher. I’ll hold on to these. You rescue Daegarn.”
The tablets were secured and the cipher was still hidden in a dwarf’s beard somewhere inside a pit where the vrykul feed prisoners to their champions, which is The Ring of Judgement.
