“Oluf will come out if you defeat the other gladiators. That’s ’bout the only way we’re getting’ that cipher back. Put on your whompin’ boots and get busy in the Ring of Judgement. If you do manage to get the cipher back, return it to Glorenfeld o’er near the entrance to these catacombs.
Me? Don’t worry about me! We’re on the brink of discovering the missing link to human-kind!”

Defeat the gladiators at the Ring of Judgement and face Oluf the Violent. Defeat Oluf and recover the Ancient Cipher. Return the Ancient Cipher to Glorenfeld at the entrance to the Utgarde Catacombs.
Quest Giver: Daegarn at the Ring of Judgement
Objective: Defeat the gladiators at the Ring of Judgement, face Oluf the Violent, recover the Ancient Cipher, and return it to Glorenfeld.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
After accepting the quest from Daegarn, enter the Ring of Judgement arena. Four vrykul gladiators will spawn one at a time in sequence:
Each gladiator spawns in the center of the ring after you defeat the previous one. There’s a brief pause between waves, giving you time to eat, drink, or bandage.
After defeating Oluf, the Ancient Cipher spawns on the ground near his body. It’s a clickable object, not body loot.
Return the cipher to Glorenfeld near the catacombs entrance to complete the quest.
Combat Tips
Warning: Clear Bag Space
Do NOT loot the Ancient Cipher with full bags. Unlike most quest objects where you can discard items and loot again, the cipher on the ground disappears if you can’t pick it up.

Story Context
Daegarn sends you into the arena with characteristic dwarven enthusiasm:
“Oluf will come out if you defeat the other gladiators. That’s ’bout the only way we’re getting’ that cipher back. Put on your whompin’ boots and get busy in the Ring of Judgement.”
“Me? Don’t worry about me! We’re on the brink of discovering the missing link to human-kind!”
Oluf the Violent announces his arrival with a battle cry: “The ring will overflow with the blood of the interlopers! Oluf has come!”
Glorenfeld’s completion text is fascinating:
“Fascinating tale! Something is actually judgin’ these things? To what end?! For what purpose?”
“Well, never mind that nonsense. Someone else can figure out that stuff. We got the cipher and the tablets back – and only two fatalities in the whole ordeal.”
The “two fatalities” refers to Pulroy and Zedd, the archaeological team members found dead earlier in the chain. Glorenfeld’s casual dismissal of the mysterious “judging” entity hints at deeper forces at work in the Ring of Judgement that the dwarves are content to leave unexplored.
Lore Context: The Ancient Cipher
The Ancient Cipher is the key to translating the Wyrmskull Tablets you collected earlier. Combined, these artifacts will reveal that vrykul are the progenitors of humanity.
The cipher was originally hidden in Daegarn’s beard (a traditional dwarven hiding spot), but the vrykul knew to check there. Oluf, as chieftain of the gladiators, claimed it as a trophy. Now recovered, it will enable McSorf back in Valgarde to decode the tablets and confirm the Explorers’ League’s most significant discovery in Northrend.

Vikstone's War JournalDaegarn rattled his cage bars as I stepped into the ring.

“Oluf will come out if you defeat the other gladiators. That’s ’bout the only way we’re getting’ that cipher back.” He grinned. “Put on your whompin’ boots and get busy!”
The first gladiator came before I’d finished settling my stance. He swung a greataxe in wide arcs meant to cleave me in half.
I let him commit and drove my spiked mace into his ribs, then twisted it free.
The crowd roared. They wanted blood. They’d get it.
Two more followed, then three at once. The vrykul fought like they had nothing to lose, because they didn’t.
Then Oluf descended.
The chieftain was larger than his warriors, and smarter. He didn’t charge blindly. He circled, testing, throwing harpoons to pin me in place. When he finally committed, he used Whirlwind strikes that forced me back. Intercepts that drove breath from my lungs.
When he fell, the Ancient Cipher tumbled from his belt.
Glorenfeld took it when I returned. “Fascinating tale! Something is actually judgin’ these things? To what end?!” He shook his head. “Never mind that nonsense. We got the cipher and the tablets back. Only two fatalities in the whole ordeal.”
Pulroy. Zedd. Only two.
Glorenfeld wanted the lot of it out of the catacombs before anything else went wrong, which means Return to Valgarde.
