Quest Giver: Guard Captain Zorek at Valgarde

Objective: Take the Harpoon Control Mechanism to Lieutenant Icehammer stationed outside of Nifflevar.

Walkthrough

Upon accepting this quest, Guard Captain Zorek will place you on a two-seater gryphon that flies you directly to Lieutenant Icehammer’s location. This is a scripted flight with no player input required.

Icehammer is hiding in a vrykul building NORTHWEST of Nifflevar, at approximately [64.5, 46.9]. Simply speak with him after landing to complete the quest.

Important: The Gryphon Ride Teaches the Return Route

Pay attention during the flight. The gryphon’s path demonstrates how to travel between Valgarde and the Nifflevar area on foot, which you’ll need for future quests in this chain.

Manual Route (If Returning Later)

If you need to reach Icehammer’s location without Zorek’s gryphon ride:

1. From Valgarde, head NORTHEAST through Wyrmskull Village
2. Continue northeast to find the path leading UP through the dam
3. The dam interior is a cave passage that temporarily dismounts you
4. Take a hard RIGHT through the tunnel
5. Once through, you can mount again
6. Continue along the path to reach the bluffs where Nifflevar sits
7. Icehammer is NORTHWEST of Nifflevar proper, in a commandeered vrykul building

Note: The return trip is easier. At the end of the chain, Let’s Go Surfing Now lets you harpoon yourself back to Valgarde rather than running back through the dam.

Story Context

Guard Captain Zorek reveals his plan is coming together:

“Do you see those vrykul buildings on the bluffs to the northeast? The vrykul call that place Nifflevar. It’s where most of their harpoon attacks on our frigates originate.”

“Well guess what? The time for payback has come, <name>. I need you to take this harpoon control mechanism and meet up with Lieutenant Icehammer, who is hiding out in a vrykul building northwest of Nifflevar. When you’re ready I’ll place you on the back of one of our gryphons and zip you right to him!”

Lieutenant Icehammer’s greeting upon arrival:

“Ah, you come bearing gifts!”

Lieutenant Icehammer is a level 74 Elite dwarf who serves as the Alliance’s forward operative in the Nifflevar area. His yells during combat give a sense of his no-nonsense military demeanor:

• “Don’t give ’em an inch, soldier! Harpoon ’em out of the sky!”
• “Knock ’em out of the sky! Don’t let them get in range of you, soldier!”
• “Defend yourself, soldier! Blow ’em out of the sky with the fiery lance! Give ’em a taste of their own medicine!”

Lore Context: Nifflevar

Nifflevar is a vrykul town belonging to the Dragonflayer clan, perched high atop the cliffs surrounding Daggercap Bay. Much larger than Wyrmskull Village, it sits in the shadow of Utgarde Keep itself.

The village boasts numerous harpoon guns of various sizes, all trained on Daggercap Bay below. Many wooden vrykul houses are built over the cliff edge with nothing but a walkway between occupants and a fatal plunge into the fjord.

The name “Nifflevar” is likely a reference to Niflheim, the “mist home” in Norse mythology, one of the nine realms. This fits WotLK’s heavy Norse theming for vrykul culture.

Narrative Significance: Nifflevar is where players can witness the Anguish of Nifflevar vision revealing King Ymiron’s decree to kill all “malformed” vrykul infants, the children who would eventually become humanity. This is the zone’s key revelation about human origins.
