Walkthrough

1. Accept quest from Walt (pick up Lightning Infused Relics simultaneously).
2. Right-click the Empty Work Bench to enter the construct.
3. Navigate to Baelgun’s Excavation Site.

Recommended Route to the Cave:

• From the Explorers’ League Outpost, head southwest until you see the excavation entrance [72.7, 67.5].
• Find the single rune pad at ground level and launch to the scaffolding with three blast-off runes.
• Take the middle rune. This launches you near the cave entrance [73.4, 70.4].
• After landing, walk left a few paces. The cave entrance will be on your right.

Alternative Route:

1. From the excavation entrance, take the scaffolding to the elevator at [72.3, 74.1].
2. Ride the elevator all the way down to the bottom level.
3. The cave entrance is straight ahead.
4. Enter the cave and proceed to the back, near the titan statue.
5. Iron dwarves will gather around a glowing holographic projection.
6. Wait and watch. Loken will appear as a hologram and deliver his speech.
7. When the message “The sound of thunder dissipates” appears, the quest completes.
8. Exit the cave, use a rune pad to return to the top level.
9. Dismiss the construct and turn in to Walt.

Critical: Completion Requirements

The quest does NOT complete just by entering the cave. You must:

1. Stand within range of the titan statue area
2. Wait for Loken’s entire speech to finish
3. See the message: “The sound of thunder dissipates”

If you leave early, you won’t get credit.

Tips

• Combo Quest: Collect blue crystal relics for Lightning Infused Relics while inside the cave. The cave has many relics and no earth elementals, making it the safest farming spot.
• Fall Damage Immunity: The construct takes no fall damage. Jump off cliffs freely to reach lower levels or escape danger.
• Bluff Early, Bluff Often: If iron dwarves approach you, spam Bluff immediately. Don’t wait for them to speak first or they’ll attack.
• Earth Elementals: These see through your disguise and will attack. Avoid them or flee via cliff-jumping.
• Suit Required: You must be in the construct for the event to trigger. If you somehow lose the suit, return to the work bench and re-enter.

Loken’s Speech (Full Transcript)

Loken yells: Come, minions! Your master calls!

Loken yells: The work of your brothers in the Storm Peaks has reached a frenzied pace. Soon, Father will be freed.

Loken yells: Your brothers to the north have subjugated the stone behemoths and set them on the path to Ulduar. Soon, the remaining defenses of the Pantheon will be neutralized.

Loken yells: The three fissures opened by the mortals of this region must be silenced. The earth hears and sees what we do and will continue to interfere with our efforts if the way is not closed.

Loken yells: Bury this place! Your master demands it!

The sound of thunder dissipates.

Lore Context: Who is Loken?

This moment is your first encounter with one of WotLK’s central villains. Loken was once a titanic keeper, one of the powerful watchers assigned by the Pantheon to guard Azeroth and keep the Old God Yogg-Saron imprisoned within Ulduar. But Yogg-Saron’s whispers eventually corrupted him.

What began as an accident (Loken killed his brother Thorim’s wife Sif) spiraled into desperate cover-ups. To hide his crimes, Loken incapacitated or corrupted the other keepers, seized the title of Prime Designate, took control of Ulduar, and became Yogg-Saron’s unwitting pawn. The iron dwarves you’re fighting throughout Howling Fjord? Loken created them using the corrupted Forge of Wills.

His speech reveals several critical plot threads:

• “Father will be freed” — Yogg-Saron, the Old God, whom Loken calls “Father”
• “Stone behemoths on the path to Ulduar” — The stone giants being weaponized against Ulduar’s defenses
• “The earth hears and sees” — A reference to Azeroth itself, whose world-soul is connected to the fissures
• “Bury this place” — Why the iron dwarves are destroying archaeological sites: to hide evidence of titan activity

Walt’s reaction upon your return is equally significant: “What could those iron menaces be up to? What are they doing in the Storm Peaks? And what is this Loken!?” The Explorers’ League has just learned that something far more dangerous than the Lich King is stirring in Northrend.

Cross-Expansion Connection: The Road to Ulduar

This quest plants seeds for the Ulduar raid in patch 3.1. Loken serves as the final boss of the Halls of Lightning dungeon, where his death triggers the “Algalon failsafe.” As Prime Designate, Loken’s death automatically summons Algalon the Observer to judge whether Azeroth should be destroyed and “re-originated.”

His final words prove prophetic: “My death… heralds the end of this world.”

Easter Egg: Pink Floyd Reference

The quest title references Delicate Sound of Thunder, a 1988 live album by Pink Floyd released during their A Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. That album title itself references Ray Bradbury’s classic 1952 science fiction short story “A Sound of Thunder,” about the catastrophic consequences of small changes to the past.

Walt describes how “the sound of thunder shot out of that cave” and frightened away all the explorers. Loken’s transmissions, powered by titan technology, boom like thunder through the cavern.
