Objective: Kill 10 Iron Rune Destroyers, 5 Iron Rune Laborers, and 2 Iron Rune Sages.

Walkthrough

1. Find Donny at [79, 49], overlooking the excavation site at Ivald’s Ruin.
2. Head into the dig site and kill the required iron dwarves:
   • Iron Rune Destroyers (10): Found both on the ridges around the pit and inside the dig site. These are the most common.
   • Iron Rune Laborers (5): Found working inside the dig pit itself.
   • Iron Rune Sages (2): Casters found inside the pit and occasionally along the perimeter. Only need two.
3. Return to Donny.

Tips

• Combo Quest: Pick up Tools to Get the Job Done from Walt at the Explorers’ League Outpost before heading here. The building tools are located in a bucket at approximately [79, 46] inside the dig site.
• Destroyers First: The Destroyers spawn heavily along the ridge, so you can knock out most of that requirement before dropping into the pit for the Laborers and Sages.
• Contested Area: If other players are competing for kills, consider grouping up. The iron dwarves respawn fairly quickly but can still become scarce during peak hours.

Story Context

Donny reveals something unusual about the iron dwarves’ activities:

“Keep it down, <race>. These iron dwarves are quick on the trigger. Now don’t let the activities down in the dig fool you. Those steel-skinned abominations aren’t digging anything up! No sir, on the contrary, they’re burying the site!”

“For whatever whacked out reason, they don’t want anyone finding this place. What kind of dwarf buries ancient relics and dig sites? I’ll tell you what kind: the kind you kill with reckless abandon!”

The iron dwarves are actively concealing Ivald’s Ruin rather than excavating it. This hints at the larger mystery explored in the Explorers’ League questline: the iron dwarves are titan-forged constructs who never succumbed to the Curse of Flesh. Whatever lies buried here threatens to reveal uncomfortable truths about dwarven origins.

Easter Egg: The Big Lebowski

The quest title and NPC are direct references to the Coen Brothers’ 1998 cult classic film The Big Lebowski.

In the film, the character Walter Sobchak (a volatile Vietnam veteran played by John Goodman) repeatedly shuts down his friend Donny with the dismissive line: “You’re out of your element, Donny!” whenever Donny tries to join conversations.

Blizzard recreated the entire trio at the Explorers’ League Outpost:

• Donny — The quest giver here, who grumbles: “I’m out of my element, eh? Walt doesn’t know what he’s talking about!”
• Walt — The main quest hub NPC at the Explorers’ League Outpost, who occasionally shouts: “You’re out of your element, Lebronski!”
• Lebronski — A dwarf who stands around the camp ranting about his ruined rug, mirroring Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski’s inciting incident in the film. Walt even refers to him as “The Dude.”

Lebronski periodically complains, “Who or what would do something like this, man? You don’t just come and do this to a dwarf’s rug!” while other dwarves debate whether the iron dwarves are responsible.
