The Argent Tournament

Quest 1 of 2 in the Argent Tournament Chain
Alliance • Icecrown • Level 80 • Argent Pavilion
Speak with Arcanist Taelis at the Argent Tournament grounds to enroll.
Mariel Trueheart is in the big pavilion on the west side of the grounds, around 69.6, 22.8. Taelis is across the field in the Alliance tent to the northeast, near 76.4, 19.4. Turning in makes you an Aspirant, which is the gate for everything else here. Take all three training quests from the tent before you leave, since they come from three different NPCs and are easy to walk past. Everything past this point is time-gated by dailies, so a day skipped is a day added, and the tournament runs weeks rather than an evening.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
The tent smelled of leather oil and polished steel, which was the first thing in weeks that had not smelled of rot. Vikstone watched young knights run lance drills within sight of Icecrown Citadel and worked out that the ceremony was the whole point of it.

“We have invited you here to test your skill and valor against others who have bravely opposed the Scourge. Many have been our divisions, but the time has come for heroes fighting under all banners to test their blades against one another in preparation for facing our mutual enemy. Arcanist Taelis is the Silver Covenant’s representative to the tournament and he’ll enter your name into the rolls and begin your training.

Seek him out inside the large Alliance tent in the northeastern part of the grounds.”

-Justicar Mariel Trueheart

Walkthrough

Fly to the Argent Tournament Grounds in northeast Icecrown [76, 19]. If this is your first visit, the easiest route is from the Dalaran flight master.

Enter the large Argent Pavilion tent on the west side of the grounds and speak with Justicar Mariel Trueheart [69.6, 22.8] to pick up the quest. Taelis is across the grounds in the Alliance tent at roughly [76.4, 19.4].

Then head to your faction’s tent: the Alliance (Silver Covenant) tent is to the northeast, the Horde (Sunreaver) tent is to the southeast. Turn in the quest to your faction representative inside. You are now an Aspirant.

What You’re Getting Into: Tournament Progression Overview

The Argent Tournament is one of WotLK’s largest content systems. It’s a weeks-long daily quest grind with four progression tiers, culminating in a title, mounts, pets, heirloom gear, and the Crusader rank. Here’s the full picture at a glance:

Rank How to Reach It Time Required What Unlocks
Aspirant Complete this breadcrumb quest Instant 3 training quests + Aspirant dailies (3 per day). Earn Aspirant’s Seals.
Valiant Earn enough Aspirant’s Seals + win the Aspirant’s Challenge joust ~3-5 days of dailies Represent one of your faction’s cities. Valiant dailies (4 per day). Earn Valiant’s Seals.
Champion Earn enough Valiant’s Seals + win the Valiant’s Challenge joust ~5 days of dailies per city Champion dailies (4-5 per day) awarding Champion’s Seals. Can champion another city and repeat the Valiant process.
Crusader Champion of all 5 faction cities + Exalted with Argent Crusade ~25+ days total “Crusader” title, Crusader-rank dailies, access to all faction rewards.

Jousting Quick Reference

You’ll spend a lot of time on tournament mounts. Grab a lance from any lance rack around the grounds, then mount one of the faction steeds near the training area. The mount replaces your action bar with four abilities:

# Ability Range Cooldown Usage
1 Thrust Melee None Spam this whenever in melee range. Your bread and butter.
2 Shield-Breaker Ranged (5-30 yd) ~2 sec Removes one stack of enemy Defend. Use at range to soften them up.
3 Charge Ranged (8-25 yd) ~6 sec High damage charge attack. Use when opponent is at distance after fleeing.
4 Defend Self 4 sec per stack Stacks 3 times. Keep this at 3 stacks at all times. Reduces incoming damage significantly. Refreshing at 3 stacks costs nothing.

Core jousting strategy: Maintain 3 stacks of Defend constantly. When the NPC charges past you, turn and hit Shield-Breaker to strip their Defend, then Charge back in. In melee, spam Thrust. Re-apply Defend whenever a stack is stripped. NPC jousters become harder at each tier, but the fundamentals don’t change.

Key Daily Quests by Phase

Aspirant Dailies (3 per day, earning Aspirant’s Seals):

Valiant Dailies (4 per day, earning Valiant’s Seals):

  • Same structure as Aspirant but slightly harder versions.
  • Includes At the Enemy’s Gates – A large-scale mounted battle against Scourge forces near Icecrown Citadel. One of the more fun dailies in the tournament.

Champion Dailies (4-5 per day, earning Champion’s Seals):

The Black Knight Questline

A mystery side-chain that unlocks alongside the tournament. A suspicious competitor is killing everyone he faces, and the Argent Crusade wants you to investigate.

The chain starts with The Black Knight of Westfall? (Alliance) or The Black Knight of Silverpine? (Horde) from Crusader Rhydalla in the Argent Pavilion. It’s a 6-quest chain involving investigation, mounted combat, and regular combat.

Completing it awards the achievement It’s Just a Flesh Wound and unlocks the Threat from Above daily. The Black Knight later returns as the final boss of the Trial of the Champion dungeon.

What Champion’s Seals Buy

Each of your faction’s five cities has a quartermaster in the faction tent selling city-specific rewards. Weapons and armor are shared across all cities, but mounts, pets, tabards, and banners are unique per city.

Major purchases include faction mounts (100 seals each), companion pets (40 seals each), and Heirloom gear for alts.

Efficiency Tips

  • Do all available dailies every day. The tournament is entirely time-gated by daily quest completions. Missing a day means falling a day behind.
  • Work on city reputations simultaneously. You’ll need Exalted with all five faction cities for Crusader. Use Champion’s Writs or wear city tabards in heroic dungeons.
  • Pair tournament dailies with other Icecrown content. The killing quests send you to areas near the Argent Vanguard and Corp’rethar, which overlap with other Icecrown quest hubs.
  • The trial dungeons (added in patch 3.2) award additional Champion’s Seals. Trial of the Champion (5-man) and Trial of the Crusader (raid) both provide seals on completion, significantly speeding up the seal grind for geared players.

Lore Context

The Argent Tournament is Highlord Tirion Fordring’s brainchild. With Icecrown Citadel looming, Fordring needed to identify the strongest champions from every faction to lead the assault. The tournament serves dual purposes: training an elite fighting force and giving the Alliance and Horde a controlled outlet for their rivalry, preventing the two factions from tearing each other apart before the real fight begins.

The tournament grounds were added in patch 3.1 (Secrets of Ulduar) and expanded in patch 3.2 (Call of the Crusade), which added the Crusaders’ Coliseum containing the Trial of the Champion dungeon and Trial of the Crusader raid.

The Alliance faction here is the Silver Covenant (high elves loyal to Dalaran), led by Vereesa Windrunner, sister of Sylvanas and Alleria. The Horde faction is The Sunreavers (blood elf mages in Dalaran), led by Aethas Sunreaver.

Both factions play significant roles in later expansions, particularly during the Purge of Dalaran in Mists of Pandaria.

Cross-Expansion Connections

  • Mists of Pandaria: The Silver Covenant and Sunreavers clash during the Purge of Dalaran, with Jaina Proudmoore forcibly expelling the Sunreavers from the city after Garrosh uses Dalaran’s portals to steal the Divine Bell. Vereesa leads the Silver Covenant forces in this event.
  • Legion: The Argent Tournament Grounds remain active. Tirion Fordring’s fate at the Broken Shore (captured and killed by the Legion) casts a shadow over everything he built here.
  • Shadowlands: Tirion appears in the afterlife. His legacy as the architect of the anti-Lich King coalition, which began at this tournament, remains central to his identity.

A tournament. Here, of all places.

Vikstone Portrait Act 3
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

The grounds sit in the far northeast of Icecrown. Alliance blue and gold standing alongside Argent white. The wind coming through them carried nothing rotten in it, and it took me a moment to work out what was missing.

Justicar Mariel Trueheart received me in the Argent Pavilion.

The Alliance tent smelled of leather oil and metal polish. I stood in it a while longer than the errand called for.

“I have entered your name in the rolls, Vikstone. As an aspirant you will train with others who wish to compete in the tournament and hone your mounted combat skills. Once you have proven yourself, you will be allowed to enter the lowest rank of competition on behalf of your capital city.”

On behalf of your capital city. Then they took me out to the stables and put me up on a Darnassian nightsaber.

Lance and charge, in place of mace and axe. Taelis has men on the grounds who will teach the three strokes to anybody who presents himself.

The young ones on the practice field are riding at wooden targets and taking it entirely seriously. I came here off a cliff where a man tortured a soul out of a corpse for an address, and I flew in on a dead animal I helped to make. Nobody at those grounds asked me about any of that. They asked which city I would be riding for.

Every rank, mount, and title on those grounds sits behind a lance nobody has taught Vikstone to hold yet, and the first lesson is Mastery of Melee.
