Quest Chain: The Drakuru Deception
This quest begins one of WotLK’s longest and most celebrated storylines, spanning two zones and a dungeon:
Grizzly Hills (quests 1-7):
Drak’Tharon Keep (dungeon): 8. Cleansing Drak’Tharon — The Lich King appears and promotes Drakuru to Overlord
Zul’Drak (continuation): 9. An Invitation, of Sorts… through to Betrayal — Infiltrate Drakuru’s necropolis Voltarus and expose him
Completing both Cleansing Drak’Tharon and Betrayal earns the Guru of Drakuru achievement.
Lore Context: Why This Quest Matters
Drakuru is the troll you captured during Filling the Cages. He’s a Drakkari ice troll who presents himself as a sympathetic prisoner with useful knowledge about Drak’Tharon Keep. He proposes a truce, offering intel in exchange for help. In the quest text, he openly admits to having shrunk more heads than he can count, and cuts his own palm on his tusks to seal the pact.
Every part of this is deliberate foreshadowing. Drakuru’s progress text reads: “Good choice, mon. You won’t be livin’ to regret it…” The double meaning is the point.
Cross-Expansion Significance: The Drakuru chain is widely cited as one of WotLK’s best story twists. The “helpful prisoner who’s actually manipulating you” setup influenced later WoW villain designs. Drakuru is permanently killed by the Lich King in Zul’Drak after the player exposes his schemes, in one of the expansion’s most memorable scenes: the Lich King spares the player, saying “I spare your insignificant life as a reward for this amusing betrayal.”

“Watch yerself, mon. Drakuru shrunk more night elf heads than I can remember.” A slow grin spread across his painted face. “Lucky for you I be stuck in dis cage or I’d be addin’ one more to da list.”
He was one of the captured Drakkari, but he carried himself differently, even behind iron bars. There was intelligence in those eyes.
“Drakuru know things, mon. Things that will aid you in your struggle here.” He leaned closer to the bars. “So mebbe we be puttin’ our differences aside fer a time, eh?”
He drew his palm across one of his tusks. Blood welled, dark and thick. He extended his hand through the bars.
“What you say, mon… truce?”
Every instinct told me this was a mistake. A blood pact with a troll headhunter, the kind of decision that gets warriors killed in stories told as warnings.
I picked up the carving knife anyway. Cut my palm and clasped his hand.
His blood was cold.
“Good choice, mon. You won’t be livin’ to regret it. Now we be connected by blood. A true bond we be havin’.”
The blood pact is sealed, and Drakuru’s grin suggests he already knows what comes next. His first request involves ingredients for something he calls a vision potion in Vial of Visions.
