Quest 9 of 9 in the Betrayal Chain (Finale)
Both Factions • Zul'Drak • Level 76 • Ebon Watch
Defeat Overlord Drakuru by turning his own Blightblood Trolls against him with the Scepter of Domination.
Stefan Vadu at Ebon Watch [14, 73] sends you to the rooftop of Voltarus for the final confrontation. Speak to Drakuru inside the necropolis and tell him you're ready. Your disguise fails by design when the fight begins. Use the modified Scepter on a Blightblood Troll to gain a pet bar with Powerful Strike, Concussion Blow, and Blightblood Infusion (heals you, not the troll). Important: When your troll dies, wait until it is fully dead before using the Scepter on another. MCing a new troll while the old one still lives turns it hostile. Most players need two trolls to finish the fight.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Vikstone turned Drakuru's own creations against him and watched the troll scream for his master. The master came, and what he did to Drakuru was less terrifying than the single word he used to describe it all.

“The time has come to end this charade, Vikstone. As valuable as your information has been, we must bring Drakuru down and bring his project to an end before his freaks are unleashed. We’ve modified your scepter for the job. When the time is right, you will be able to use it on Drakuru’s Blightbloods and turn them against him. It’s your only hope of defeating him.

Fight well.”

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Stefan Vadu (via Stefan’s Horn) at Ebon Watch, Zul’Drak [14, 74]

Objective: Defeat Overlord Drakuru using the modified Scepter of Domination to turn his own Blightblood Trolls against him.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Rooftop of Voltarus, northwestern Zul’Drak
  • Chain Position: 9 of 9 in the Drakuru Betrayal chain (final quest, follows Sabotage)
  • Achievement: Completing this quest (along with Cleansing Drak’Tharon from Grizzly Hills) awards Guru of Drakuru

Walkthrough

Step 1: Initiate the Encounter

  • Equip the Ensorcelled Choker and enter Voltarus as normal.
  • Speak to Overlord Drakuru inside the necropolis. Tell him you’re ready to accompany him. He teleports you to the rooftop platform of Voltarus.
  • Drakuru will give a short speech about his Blightblood army, then summon four Blightblood Trolls on smaller platforms surrounding the main area.

Step 2: Control a Blightblood Troll

  • Your disguise will fail. This is scripted and intentional. You’ll see a warning message and then a raid warning: “The Scepter of Domination glows brightly! Use it now!”
  • Do not panic. Do not try to reapply your disguise. Immediately use the Scepter of Domination on one of the nearby Blightblood Trolls.
  • The troll becomes your pet with a special action bar containing three abilities:
    • Powerful Strike (Pet Action 4): Heavy melee damage. Spam this on cooldown.
    • Concussion Blow (Pet Action 5): Stun/interrupt. Use to buy breathing room and interrupt Shadow Bolt casts.
    • Blightblood Infusion (Pet Action 6): Heals you (the player), not the troll. Use when your health drops.

Step 3: Fight Drakuru

  • Target Drakuru and send your troll to attack. Make sure you actually click on Drakuru as your target, or the troll’s special abilities won’t fire against him.
  • Drakuru has two main attacks aimed at you (not the troll):
    • Shadow Bolt: Hits for ~1,500-5,000 depending on your level and gear. He chains these rapidly when no troll has aggro.
    • Blight Crystals: Green/orange projectiles that land and create persistent toxic puddles on the ground dealing heavy nature damage. These pools linger for roughly 30 seconds.
  • Keep moving to avoid Blight Crystal puddles. Strafe around the platform’s perimeter rather than running in tight circles, which causes puddle overlap. Don’t need to move constantly, just reposition when you see a crystal incoming.
  • Keep the troll’s Powerful Strike and Concussion Blow on cooldown at all times. Save Blightblood Infusion for when you actually take damage.
  • Turn up Spell Detail in your video settings. On low settings, the toxic ground puddles are nearly invisible, making the fight dramatically harder.

Step 4: Switching Trolls

  • One Blightblood Troll is usually not enough to finish the fight. When your troll reaches ~5-10% health:
    • Use Blightblood Infusion one last time to top off your own health.
    • Position yourself near one of the remaining Blightblood Trolls on the outer platforms.
    • Wait for your current troll to die completely. If you MC a new troll while the old one still lives, it goes hostile and will attack you at full strength. This is the #1 cause of deaths on this quest.
    • Once the first troll is dead, immediately use the Scepter on the next one. You do NOT need your Scourge disguise active to use the Scepter.
    • During the transition, Drakuru will target you directly with Shadow Bolts. Use any personal defensive cooldowns, health potions, or self-heals to survive until the new troll picks up aggro.
  • Most need 2 trolls to finish the fight. Well-played attempts with class buffs (DK Ghoul Frenzy, Paladin heals on the troll, Warlock Health Funnel) can sometimes do it with one.

Step 5: The Lich King Appears

  • When Drakuru reaches ~1% health, he stops fighting and summons the Lich King through a portal.
  • Drakuru begs his master to punish you. Instead, the Lich King kills Drakuru for his failure, then turns to address you directly before departing.
  • You do not deal the killing blow. The Lich King executes Drakuru.

Step 6: Loot and Escape

  • After the RP event, Drakuru’s Skull appears on the platform floor (not on a body). Pick it up.
  • You also receive Drakuru’s Last Wish, a use item that teleports you back down to the Reliquary of Pain. This item expires after 3 minutes, so don’t waste time.
  • If you miss the Last Wish or it expires: use a Hearthstone, mount a flying mount (level 77+), or jump off the platform (you’ll die, but you’ll respawn at the Argent Stand graveyard).
  • Loot quickly. Drakuru respawns fast. If another player triggers the event before you grab the skull, he goes hostile again and starts throwing Shadow Bolts at you.
  • Summon Stefan Vadu with the horn at the Reliquary, or fly to Ebon Watch to turn in. Note: turning in this quest removes your Ensorcelled Choker. If you still need the Scourge disguise for other quests in the area (like Leave No One Behind), complete those first.

Efficiency Tips

  • Strip your gear before attempting if you’re concerned about repair bills. The fight can take multiple attempts, and deaths add up fast.
  • Bring consumables. Health potions, shadow resistance potions, and bandages are valuable during troll transitions. Classes with personal defensive cooldowns (Divine Shield, Ice Block, Anti-Magic Shell, Deterrence) should save them for the transition.
  • Macro for convenience. This macro spams all three troll abilities:

  /cast Powerful Strike
  /cast Concussion Blow
  /cast Blightblood Infusion

And this one helps grab a new troll fast:

  /target Blightblood Troll
  /use Scepter of Domination
  /target Overlord Drakuru

  • Pet classes: do NOT summon your own pets. Water Elementals, Shadowfiends, Ghouls (unless using Ghoul Frenzy for the healing buff), and Feral Spirits will break your control over the Blightblood Troll.
  • Don’t Feign Death (Hunters). It ends the encounter and despawns Drakuru, leaving you stranded on the roof.
  • Don’t Shadowmeld (Night Elves). Same problem as Feign Death.
  • Group option. Both players can MC separate trolls. Only one player needs to trigger the event by talking to Drakuru. Both can loot the skull afterward. Even cross-faction players present on the rooftop when the event concludes can loot the skull.
  • Healers have it easy. If you can heal your troll (Paladin, Warlock Health Funnel, Shaman totems), one troll is often sufficient for the entire fight.
  • Unholy DKs: Ghoul Frenzy works on the Blightblood Troll, healing it and increasing its attack speed. This trivializes the fight to a single troll.
  • Shamans: Bloodlust/Heroism buffs your troll.

Known Issues

  • If you MC a troll too early (before the raid warning message), Drakuru may remain friendly and never attack. If this happens, right-click your disguise buff to remove it manually, which should make him go hostile.
  • If another player’s event is in progress when you port up, your troll may not be able to attack Drakuru. Either wait for the other player to finish or leave and try again.
  • The edge of the platform has Blight Geists on a lower ring that can aggro and interrupt your MC casting. Avoid the very edge during troll transitions.

Lore & Secrets

The End of the Double Agent

This is the final chapter of a deception that spans two zones. Drakuru first manipulated you in Grizzly Hills, posing as a sympathetic prisoner at Granite Springs while using you to gather artifacts for a Scourge ritual.

His true allegiance was revealed at Drak’Tharon Keep, where the Lich King promoted him to Overlord. In Zul’Drak, the tables turned: you infiltrated his necropolis as a double agent for the Knights of the Ebon Blade, ultimately using his own creations to destroy him.

The Lich King’s decision to spare you is not mercy. His parting warning (“When next we meet I shall require much more to justify your life”) foreshadows the confrontation in Icecrown Citadel.

He views the betrayal as entertainment, and you as a potential future asset.

Cross-Expansion Connections

Drakuru’s Legacy

  • Drakuru is permanently dead. No returns in later expansions. However, his storyline is frequently cited by developers and players as one of WotLK’s best quest chains, and the “helpful NPC who’s actually manipulating you” formula influenced later villain designs throughout the franchise.
  • Stefan Vadu reappears at Light’s Hammer in Icecrown Citadel as part of the assault force, bringing the Ebon Blade’s Zul’Drak operations full circle.

The Lich King’s Pattern

  • This is one of several WotLK moments where the Lich King appears to players personally (others include the Wrathgate, Halls of Reflection, and multiple Icecrown quests). Each encounter raises the stakes and reinforces that he’s been watching your progress across all of Northrend. His line here echoes through the rest of the expansion.

WotLK Classic vs. Original WotLK

  • A patch altered released-troll behavior: if you release a troll before it dies, it now returns to its spawn point and resets rather than going hostile and attacking you. This makes the fight more forgiving than the original 2008 version.
  • Drakuru’s Last Wish was bugged at launch (originally teleported players into the ocean or couldn’t be looted). It functions correctly in WotLK Classic, teleporting you to the Reliquary of Pain.

“The time has come to end this charade,” Stefan said. “We’ve modified your scepter. Use it on Drakuru’s Blightbloods and turn them against him. It’s your only hope of defeating him.”

Vikstone Portrait Act 2
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

Drakuru took me to the top of Voltarus and showed off his creations.

“Behold, mon! We be creatin’ da greatest Scourge army ever seen! These be da first of many!”

Then my disguise failed.

“What treachery is this?!” His face twisted with rage. “You be payin’ for this deceit with your life, mon!”

The scepter flared in my hand. His own Blightbloods turned on him, blight-infused trolls tearing into their master. Drakuru threw shadow bolts and blight crystals, screaming as his army destroyed him.

“I never needed ya, mon!”

“Fool! Ya coulda been havin’ great power!”

“How could dis be? Da Lich King said he be havin’ great plans for you…”

Then, failing: “ENOUGH! Master, dis mortal scum be double-crossin’ us. Dey must be made to suffer!”

A portal tore open, and the temperature dropped as the Lich King stepped through.

I couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe.

“You have failed me, Drakuru.”

“It is you who should suffer. Be content that your death is a quick one.”

One wave of Frostmourne and Drakuru’s head exploded, its remains rolling across the platform.

The Lich King turned to me.

“As for you… I spare your insignificant life as a reward for this amusing betrayal. When next we meet, I shall require much more to justify your life.”

Then he was gone. I stood alone among the carnage, pieces of Drakuru’s skull at my feet.

He’d found it amusing.

Stefan was pleased when I reported. “It is done. Our work here will be much more manageable.”

Drakuru was dead, the Ebon Blade’s operation was finished, and a signal flare to the east meant someone else needed Vikstone’s sword in Taking a Stand
