Infiltrating Voltarus

Quest Giver: Stefan Vadu — Ebon Watch, Zul’Drak [14, 73]

Objective: Use the Ensorcelled Choker to infiltrate Voltarus, complete Overlord Drakuru‘s task, then blow Stefan’s Horn to report back.

Walkthrough

This quest is a multi-stage infiltration mission. Stefan sends you undercover into the Scourge command center, where you’ll complete a sub-quest for Drakuru before reporting back. Here’s how to handle it step by step.

Getting Inside Voltarus

1. Activate your disguise. Right-click the Ensorcelled Choker before approaching the Reliquary of Pain. Remember: no mounting while disguised.
2. Travel northeast to the Reliquary of Pain. The teleportation pad is at approximately [28, 45]. Stand on the glowing pad while disguised to teleport up into Voltarus. Do NOT confuse this with the Reliquary of Agony (near Zeramas, where Gristlegut is). Voltarus floats above The Dead Fields to the northeast, not above the Reliquary of Agony. The necropolis near Ebon Watch is Zeramas, a completely different structure.
3. If you have Cold Weather Flying, you can fly directly to the landing terrace on the southeast side of Voltarus and activate your disguise there. The flying mobs around the structure won’t aggro you.

Completing Drakuru’s Task

4. Speak to Overlord Drakuru. He’s directly in front of you when you teleport in. He’ll offer you one of two sub-quests:
   • Reunited if you completed his Grizzly Hills/Drak’Tharon chain (warm greeting as an old ally).
   • Dark Horizon if you did not (cold, dismissive tone toward a random ghoul).
5. Accept the sub-quest, then find Gorebag. From Drakuru, turn around and head to the open-air terrace on the southeast side of the platform (roughly a quarter of the way around the circular walkway). Gorebag will put you on a gargoyle for a flying tour of Zul’Drak, earning exploration XP for any undiscovered areas along the route.
6. After the flight, return to Drakuru and turn in the sub-quest (Dark Horizon or Reunited). This completes the “Overlord Drakuru’s task complete” objective for Infiltrating Voltarus.

Reporting Back to Stefan

7. Exit Voltarus. Take the teleportation pad back to the ground. The exit pad is down the ramp from the entry pad, not the same one you arrived on.
8. Blow Stefan’s Horn once you’re safely outside. Stefan will fly to your location so you can turn in the quest without trekking back to Ebon Watch. If you forgot the horn or accidentally abandoned the quest, you can still walk back to Ebon Watch and turn in directly.

Troubleshooting

• Teleporter not working? Try removing your disguise and re-activating it. This fixes a bug where the pad stops responding, especially after turning in the sub-quest.
• Gorebag not appearing? Log out and log back in. This is a known issue.
• Warlocks: Dismiss your pet before talking to Gorebag. The gargoyle won’t spawn while a pet is active.
• Disguise drops inside Voltarus? Don’t panic. Head to the safe zone behind the prisoner cages against the back wall (roughly a quarter of the way clockwise from Drakuru). You can safely re-activate the choker there without pulling aggro.
• No invisible walls. Unlike many floating structures, Voltarus has open edges. You can and will fall off if you aren’t paying attention. Stefan’s quest text even hints at this: “If things get ugly, do yourself a favor and jump.”
• Arcanite Ripper users: Using this weapon while disguised reportedly makes you immune to Blightguard detection, though the disguise’s random drop still breaks you out. This may not work in WotLK Classic.

Lore Context

This is the turning point of the Ebon Watch storyline. Stefan sends you on what he openly admits is “likely a death sentence,” and his completion text reveals genuine surprise that you survived: “I must admit I’m more than a little surprised to see you.”

He’s a pragmatist who expected to lose an agent but gained critical intelligence instead.

Stefan’s instruction to “earn the trust of the Scourge commander” reveals the scope of the deception. You’re not just sneaking in for a quick look; you’re establishing yourself as a double agent who will operate inside Voltarus for the rest of the chain.

Every subsequent quest in the chain involves returning to Voltarus, completing tasks for Drakuru, then secretly reporting to Stefan.
