Walkthrough

Step 1: Accept the Quest

Accept from Surristrasz [45, 34]. Immediately upon accepting, you will be placed on a drake and flown automatically to Coldarra.

Important: You must be unmounted and not shapeshifted (Druids) when accepting this quest. If the automatic flight doesn’t trigger:

1. Abandon the quest
2. Dismount/shift out of forms
3. Accept the quest again

Step 2: Enjoy the Ride

You’ll fly across the Westrift to Coldarra, landing at the Transitus Shield [33, 35]. No action required during the flight.

Step 3: Find Archmage Berinand

The Transitus Shield is a small camp with several cabins arranged in a ring. Archmage Berinand is inside one of the cabins. Look for the cabin with the quest marker.

Free Ride Exploit

This works because:

• Accepting the quest triggers the automatic flight to Coldarra
• Abandoning the quest doesn’t penalize you
• Surristrasz offers the quest again immediately

This can be useful before you have Cold Weather Flying, though once you’ve explored Coldarra, you’ll have the flight path from Transitus Shield anyway.

Story Context: Entering the Heart of the Conflict

Surristrasz’s dialogue reveals the gravity of what you’re stepping into:

“I’ve been mindful of your efforts, mortal. Do not feign surprise. Surely you’ve felt my eye upon you.”

“The time has come to peel back a layer of darkness from your mind. There are stark truths that you have grown ready to accept.”

“Before hearing the tale, you shall be shown firsthand what we face.”

“Put your affairs in order, <class>…”

Berinand (completion): “Welcome to Coldarra, <class>.”

“Under the Transitus Shield we lie hidden just a stone’s throw from the Nexus, fortress of the great aspect Malygos and his blue dragonflight.”

“Do make yourself comfortable.”

Lore: The Transitus Shield

The Transitus Shield is a hidden Kirin Tor outpost on the edge of Coldarra, dangerously close to the Nexus itself. The base is protected by a magical reflective shield maintained by several warmages channeling continuously.

From outside, the shield creates the illusion that there’s nothing there but snow and trees. This camouflage is essential: if Malygos discovered the base, the consequences would be catastrophic. The Kirin Tor operates here in secret, gathering intelligence on the blue dragonflight and coordinating resistance to the Nexus War.

• Librarian Serrah: Quest giver for shield maintenance quests
• Raelorasz: Red dragon coordinating anti-Malygos operations

The camp also has a flight master connecting back to Amber Ledge.

Threat Level: One of the quests at Transitus Shield (Keep the Secret Safe) reveals how precarious their situation is: the warmages maintaining the shield need constant mana replenishment. With supply lines cut, Librarian Serrah has you harvest mana essences from nearby arcane serpents just to keep the shield operational.

Easter Egg: Title Reference

“Traversing the Rift” may be a reference to the adult animated series Tripping the Rift (2004-2007), a CGI comedy that aired during WotLK’s development period.

Amber Ledge Campaign Complete

This quest concludes the Amber Ledge story arc that began with Nick of Time (Alliance) or Too Close For Comfort (Horde).
