Story Context: The Bigger Picture
With Evanor rescued, the focus shifts from the local mage hunter threat to the larger crisis: Malygos and the Nexus War.
Evanor (quest text): “I am aware of your recent deeds here, <name>, and again I thank you.”
“As for this local menace, we’ve learned all we need to know from them. They’ll be dealt with in short order.”
“On now to more important issues…”
“Azeroth needs you. The region just west of here is the center of an urgent crisis. I’ll leave the details to Lord Surristrasz. You must speak with him at once.”
“Good luck, friend of Dalaran.”
Surristrasz (completion): “So, <race>, we speak again.”
“When you’ve heard my words you may wish we had not.”
This ominous response sets up the gravity of what you’re about to face. The “region just west” is Coldarra, an island dominated by the Nexus, the blue dragonflight’s fortress and seat of Malygos’s power.
Lore: Transition to the Nexus War
Dragonspeak serves as the narrative bridge between two storylines:
Evanor’s phrase “friend of Dalaran” acknowledges that through your actions, you’ve proven yourself to the Kirin Tor. Surristrasz’s cryptic warning hints at the scale of what’s coming: the Aspect of Magic himself has declared war on all mortal spellcasters, and you’re about to step into the heart of that conflict.
What Comes Next: Traversing the Rift
The follow-up quest Traversing the Rift is where the actual flight to Coldarra happens. Surristrasz will send you across the Westrift to the Transitus Shield, where you’ll meet Archmage Berinand and begin an entirely new questline focused on the Nexus War.
Surristrasz’s dialogue in that quest reveals his perspective:
“I’ve been mindful of your efforts, mortal. Do not feign surprise. Surely you’ve felt my eye upon you.”
“The time has come to peel back a layer of darkness from your mind. There are stark truths that you have grown ready to accept.”
“Before hearing the tale, you shall be shown firsthand what we face.”
“Put your affairs in order, <class>…”

The mage hunters. Beryl Point. All of it, reduced to a footnote in a larger crisis.
“On now to more important issues. Azeroth needs you. The region just west of here is the center of an urgent crisis. I’ll leave the details to Lord Surristrasz. You must speak with him at once.”
West. Coldarra. The source of the magic that had driven the murlocs mad and corrupted the caverns, fueling the anomalies Garren had been tracking. Whatever was happening there, it was bigger than abducted mages and zealous inquisitors.
“Good luck, friend of Dalaran.”
I found Surristrasz where I’d left him. “So. We speak again.”
He let the silence stretch.
“When you’ve heard my words, you may wish we had not.”
The Nexus War and the blue dragonflight. Malygos himself, perhaps. Everything I’d seen in Borean Tundra had been echoes of something larger. Now I was about to learn what cast the shadow.
Surristrasz told him to put his affairs in order and then told him to climb on, because the dragon meant to show him what they were facing before explaining any of it, which means Traversing the Rift.
