Lore: The Kvaldir
The Kvaldir, called tuk-hariq (“walkers of the fog” or “sons of the mist”) in the tuskarr language, are fearsome spectral vrykul sea raiders. They emerge from mist to attack ships and coastal settlements, then vanish back into the fog.
Origins: Long ago, a vrykul tribe struggling against the Curse of Flesh sought help from their priestesses. The ritual went catastrophically wrong, contacting a malevolent entity that corrupted them further. These eternally vengeful beings became the Kvaldir. Covered in green scales, barnacles, and seaweed, they reside in the ocean depths, sustained by mistweaving magic.
Why They Attack: The current Kvaldir raids were triggered when the Northsea Freebooters (pirates) looted sacred vrykul burial artifacts from Shield Hill in Howling Fjord. The enraged spirits have been attacking coastlines ever since. But as the tuskarr discovered, the Kvaldir’s vengeance extends far beyond simple raids. At Riplash Strand, they were trying to free the kraken Leviroth by sacrificing naga and tuskarr.
Tuskarr Belief: The Kalu’ak believe the Kvaldir are angered spirits of slain vrykul, and that the mists enable them to manifest in the physical world. When killed, Kvaldir dissolve into mist, leaving only the barnacles and seaweed that accumulated on their bodies.
Cross-Expansion Connection: The Kvaldir’s origins were further explained in Legion. They serve Helya, a titanic watcher transformed into a spectral Val’kyr by Odyn. She rules Helheim and commands the Kvaldir as her undead army. The Helarjar are elite Kvaldir warriors serving directly under Helya.

The Kvaldir may be inspired by John Carpenter’s horror film The Fog (1980), which features ghostly raiders emerging from fog to attack a coastal town. The Viking use of mist to mask their movements and conduct surprise raids is also a documented historical tactic.

Vikstone's War JournalKaskala. The tuskarr called it sacred ground, a place where the spirit of Tayutka herself had guided their ancestors generations ago. Now the mist-walkers had come to take it from them.

Ataika gripped his harpoon like a man who’d learned patience hunting whales and was about to apply it to something that bled easier.
“We will show them that our spears are not merely for whaling,” he said. “Fight alongside us, friend.”
The Kvaldir came from the fog, with green scales crusted on their flesh where barnacles hadn’t already claimed purchase. Seaweed hung from their armor in rotting curtains as they moved quickly.
But they died like anything else.
Twelve raiders. I lost count somewhere around the fifth, when the fighting became rhythm instead of thought. The tuskarr fought beside me, their harpoons finding throats and joints with the precision of hunters. They had practiced for this their entire lives. When a Kvaldir fell, its body didn’t stay. The flesh dissolved into mist, leaving only patches of sea growth and whatever it had been carrying.
Sons of the mist, returning to it.
Ataika found me after, breathing hard but standing straight.
“I thank you,” he said. “I will be deeply in your debt if we ever make it out of here alive.”
The elder Muahit had seen something in that fog the younger warriors had not, which is why they start Preparing for the Worst.
