The Art of Persuasion

Quest 5 of 10 in the Amber Ledge Campaign
Alliance • Borean Tundra • Level 71 • Amber Ledge
Use the Neural Needler on the Imprisoned Beryl Sorcerer 5 times until he reveals Lady Evanor's location.
The prisoner is in the chair right next to Normantis. Target him and use the Neural Needler from your inventory 5 times. He breaks on the fifth use and reveals where Evanor is held. No travel, no combat. This quest is NOT required for Nothing Boring About Borean. Skipping it costs ~85,000 XP, 20 gold, and 895 Kirin Tor rep across the remaining chain. If you continue using the Needler after the quest completes, the prisoner has additional dialogue lines.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Normantis handed Vikstone a torture device and turned to organize his bookshelf. The Kirin Tor's code of conduct would stay clean. Vikstone's wouldn't.

“It is fortunate you’re here, Night Elf. You see, the Kirin Tor code of conduct frowns upon our taking certain ‘extreme’ measures – even in desperate times such as these. You, however, as an outsider, are not bound by such restrictions and could take any steps necessary in the retrieval of information. Do what you must. We need to know where Lady Evanor is being held at once!

I’ll just busy myself organizing these shelves here. Oh, and here, perhaps you’ll find this old thing useful….”

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Step 1: Accept the Quest

Librarian Normantis explains why he needs an outsider:

“It is fortunate you’re here, <race>.”

“You see, the Kirin Tor code of conduct frowns upon our taking certain ‘extreme’ measures, even in desperate times such as these.”

“You, however, as an outsider, are not bound by such restrictions and could take any steps necessary in the retrieval of information.”

“Do what you must. We need to know where Lady Evanor is being held at once!”

“I’ll just busy myself organizing these shelves here. Oh, and here, perhaps you’ll find this old thing useful…”

Step 2: Locate the Prisoner

The Imprisoned Beryl Sorcerer is seated in a chair directly next to Normantis. No travel required.

Step 3: Use the Neural Needler

Target the prisoner and use the Neural Needler from your quest inventory. It takes 5 uses to complete the quest.

Complete Dialogue Sequence:

  1. “Pathetic fool! A servant of Malygos would sooner die than aid an enemy…”
  2. “Aargh! Do your worst, <class>! I’ll tell you NOTHING!”
  3. “Aahhhh! Release me! I am of no use to you. I swear it!”
  4. “Stop! I beg you, please stop. Please…”
  5. (Quest Complete) “Alright! I am beaten. Your precious archmage is held in a prison, elevated and sealed. Even if you manage to reach her, Salrand herself holds the key. Your mission is folly!”

Optional: Continued Torture

After completing the quest, you still have the Neural Needler and can continue using it on the prisoner. Additional dialogue lines play:

  • “I’ve given you the information, <race>! You’re wasting your time…”
  • “Enough! I’ve told you all that I know. Your continued abuse is senseless!”
  • “You aren’t even asking me questions!”
  • “Are you trying to meet the real me?” (Firefly reference)
  • “You have a darkness in you, <race>.”
  • “You have shown me the face of true evil, <name>.”
  • “Noooo! This torture is inhumane! You have what you want… why don’t you just kill me?”

Permanent Torture Option: After completing the quest, you can purchase a Prototype Neural Needler from Initiate Mehrtens on the top floor of the mage tower. This allows you to continue torturing the prisoner indefinitely, even after the quest is complete.

Story Context: Intelligence Extraction

The critical intelligence revealed is:

  • Lady Evanor is held in an elevated, sealed prison
  • Inquisitor Salrand holds the key

This sets up the next quests: you’ll need to kill Salrand to get the key, then reforge it with dragon magic to access Evanor’s prison.

Easter Egg: “Made in Dalaran”

Lore Connection: The Neural Needler may have precedent in WoW lore. It appears in the novel Beyond the Dark Portal, where Khadgar reluctantly uses one to interrogate a fel orc.

Real-World Controversy

This quest became one of WotLK’s most discussed pieces of content, sparking debate about torture in video games.

Richard Bartle, co-creator of MUD (the first multi-user dungeon and ancestor of all MMOs), wrote a critique that gained significant publication. His criticism focused less on the morality of virtual torture and more on game design: the quest removes player agency by making torture the only option to progress.

Key criticisms from players included:

  • The quest implies torture is effective (the prisoner gives accurate, actionable intelligence)
  • There’s no option to refuse or find an alternative
  • The Kirin Tor’s “plausible deniability” framing is uncomfortable
  • You literally walk past Evanor’s prison earlier in the questline, making the torture feel unnecessary

Skipping the Quest: For players uncomfortable with the content, the cost of skipping is approximately 85,000 XP, 20 gold, and 895 Kirin Tor reputation across this quest and the rest of the chain, plus the gear rewards from Rescuing Evanor. The zone achievement can still be completed without this chain.

Warrior IconVikstone's War Journal

Normantis pressed something into my hand. A slender device, humming faintly with arcane energy.

Vikstone Portrait Act 1
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

“It is fortunate you’re here. You see, the Kirin Tor code of conduct frowns upon our taking certain ‘extreme’ measures.” He turned toward his bookshelf. “You, however, as an outsider, are not bound by such restrictions and could take any steps necessary in the retrieval of information.”

He began organizing volumes, his back to me.

“Do what you must. We need to know where Lady Evanor is being held at once. I’ll just busy myself organizing these shelves here.”

I looked at the device. Then at the prisoner.

“Pathetic fool!” The sorcerer’s voice was hoarse but defiant. “A servant of Malygos would sooner die than aid an enemy.”

The Neural Needler did exactly what its name suggested. He screamed, then cursed, then begged. By the fourth application, he talked.

I stopped when I had what I needed. Some wouldn’t have. Some would have kept going just to watch him suffer. The thought crossed my mind, brief and ugly. I put the device down.

Normantis turned from his shelves, expression neutral.

“Excellent. It was crucial that we collect that intelligence. Well done, friend.”

They’d keep their hands clean, their code of conduct intact. And I’d carry what happened in this room.

I cleaned the device and left it on Normantis’s shelf.

The prisoner talked. Evanor was sealed in an elevated prison, Inquisitor Salrand held the key, and none of it counts for anything until somebody starts Sharing Intelligence.
