“So it’s true. They have her. It’s clear what must be done, Night Elf. She WILL be saved. I must remain here and aid in the rescue preparations. I call upon you again; this time to collect the prison key. All we know of this Salrand figure is that she cannot be harmed so long as her shield is intact. We’ve customized a special explosive that should strip her of this protection, allowing you to perform your duty. Return to me when you’ve collected the key.
Hurry, Vikstone. Lady Evanor is suffering!”
-Libarian Donathan

Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Step 1: Locate Inquisitor Salrand
Head southwest from Amber Ledge to Beryl Point. Look for the largest of the circular blue platforms, the one with a glowing blue barrier around it. Salrand floats in the center, channeling magic.
Approximate coordinates: [41, 38] to [42, 39]
The shield is visually distinctive: a dome of blue energy covering the entire platform. You cannot harm Salrand while the shield is active.
Step 2: Clear the Area (Optional)
Several Beryl Mage Hunters patrol inside the shield. Consider clearing them before engaging Salrand to avoid fighting multiple enemies at once.
Step 3: Use the Detonator
Use the Beryl Shield Detonator anywhere inside the shielded area. The shield will collapse with an explosion effect.
Salrand reacts:
“What is the meaning of this disturbance?!”
“Who dares interrupt my work!? Show yourself, coward!”
She then descends from her floating position to ground level.
Step 4: Kill Inquisitor Salrand
Salrand is a level 71 humanoid with no special abilities. Straightforward fight for any class.
Upon death, she shouts:
“I’ve destroyed the key! Your cherished archmage belongs to Malygos!”
Step 5: Loot the Lockbox
After Salrand dies, Salrand’s Lockbox spawns in the center of the platform. Loot Salrand’s Broken Key from it.
Important Mechanic: The lockbox is lootable by anyone on the quest, not just whoever tagged Salrand. If another player kills her while you’re nearby, you can still loot the key.

Story Context: The Broken Key
Donathan’s urgency is palpable:
“So it’s true. They have her.”
“It’s clear what must be done, <race>. She WILL be saved.”
“I must remain here and aid in the rescue preparations. I call upon you again; this time to collect the prison key. All we know of this Salrand figure is that she cannot be harmed so long as her shield is intact.”
“We’ve customized a special explosive that should strip her of this protection, allowing you to perform your duty. Return to me when you’ve collected the key.”
“Hurry, <name>. Lady Evanor is suffering!”
When you return with the key, the complication becomes clear:
Donathan: “Broken? Let me have a look…”
Salrand’s dying words were literal: she destroyed the key before dying, ensuring that even her death wouldn’t free Evanor. This is why the next quest involves dragon magic to reforge it.
Lore: Inquisitor Salrand
Inquisitor Salrand commands the mage hunter operations at Beryl Point. Her ambient dialogue reveals her zealotry:
“Fill these prisons with mages! Malygos demands it!”
“These prisons are to be filled at once or Malygos will know why!”
“These cages are bled dry. Get me more prisoners at once!”
“Bring me more prisoners! Do not rest until Azeroth has been cleansed of its reckless magic-users!”
She genuinely believes she’s protecting Azeroth by eliminating mortal magic users, echoing the arguments that swayed other Kirin Tor defectors. Her willingness to destroy the key rather than let Evanor be rescued shows the depth of her conviction.

Vikstone's War JournalDonathan’s composure had cracked.

“So it’s true. They have her.” His hands shook. “It’s clear what must be done. She WILL be saved.”
The Beryl Shield Detonator, customized to punch through whatever protection Salrand was hiding behind.
“All we know of this Salrand figure is that she cannot be harmed so long as her shield is intact. This explosive should strip her of that protection, allowing you to perform your duty.” He gripped my arm. “Return to me when you’ve collected the key. Hurry. Lady Evanor is suffering!”
Beryl Point’s main platform was ringed by a large magical barrier. Inside, Inquisitor Salrand floated above her operation, surrounded by guards, watching her hunters fill prison after prison with captive mages.
“Fill these prisons with mages!” Her voice carried across the camp. “Malygos demands it! Do not rest until Azeroth has been cleansed of its reckless magic-users!”
I threw the detonator.
The shield shattered in a cascade of arcane sparks. Salrand dropped from the air, already screaming.
“What is the meaning of this disturbance?! Who dares interrupt my work!?”
I showed her who dared.
The fight was brief. Salrand was an inquisitor, not a warrior. Her guards fell trying to protect her, and then she fell too. But in her final moment, she laughed.
“I’ve destroyed the key! Your cherished archmage belongs to Malygos!”
Broken fragments scattered across the platform. I gathered what I could.
Donathan stared at the pieces.
“Broken? Let me have a look….”
The key was in pieces and Salrand had spent her last breath making certain of it, and Donathan knew somebody who worked with forces older than locksmithing, which is what Reforging the Key actually takes.
