A Great Storm Approaches

Quest 1 of 4 in the Storm King Chain
Both Factions • Zul'Drak • Level 76 • Thrym's End
Find a way to free Gymer, King of Storm Giants, from his cage at Thrym's End.
Gymer at Thrym's End [19, 56] is locked in a Scourge cage. Talk to him to accept the quest, then travel east to Engineer Reed at the Crusader Forward Camp [25, 64]. His hitbox is tricky through the cage bars, try the southwest corner. No combat required. Reed agrees to help if Gymer deals with Prince Navarius and his Scourge forces in return.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Vikstone found a giant king locked in a cage built for something half his size, still enough to make the Scourge guards keep their distance. Reed at the Forward Camp heard the pitch and did the math: one caged storm giant plus one set of locks equaled leverage against Navarius.

“You are not like the others, little one. You do not reek of the ancient death. Perhaps you can be trusted. I am Gymer, king of the storm giants. I was lured here by my brother, Thiassi, now an undead servant of the Lich King. By the time I realized that his cry for help was a trap, it was too late. I am now a prisoner of the Scourge and I fear that soon I will suffer the same fate as many of the other storm giants.

Find a way to release me from this cage and I will aid you to the best of my ability.”

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Head southwest from the Crusader Forward Camp to Thrym’s End [19, 56]. You’ll find Gymer, King of Storm Giants, locked in a massive cage surrounded by Scourge. Talk to him to accept the quest.

  • Reaching Gymer: His hitbox can be tricky to click through the cage bars. Try jumping on the southwest side of the cage [19, 56] or mounting up to reach his interaction point. It can be difficult to accept the quest if the cage is closed, but approaching from the southwest corner usually works.
  • This is a pure dialogue/travel quest. No combat required (though you’ll likely need to clear Vargul near the cage). Gymer asks you to find someone who can break him out.
  • Run back to Engineer Reed at the Crusader Forward Camp [25, 64] and turn in. Reed agrees to help but wants you to promise Gymer will deal with Prince Navarius and his Scourge forces in exchange.

How to Reach This Quest

The prerequisite chain starts at Light’s Breach [32, 75] in southern Zul’Drak:

  1. In Search of Answers from Crusader Lord Lantinga
  2. Orders from Drakuru (found at Rageclaw Den)
  3. Crusader Forward Camp — turn in to Crusader MacKellar at [25, 64]

Completing Crusader Forward Camp unlocks Gymer’s quest. You’ll pick it up naturally while doing other Forward Camp quests like Light Won’t Grant Me Vengeance and Making Something Out of Nothing.

Lore Context

Gymer is the king of the storm giants, a race of colossal elemental-aligned beings in Northrend. His name comes from “Ymer” (Ymir), the primordial giant in Norse mythology from whose body the world was made.

He was lured to Thrym’s End by his brother Thiassi, who had already been turned undead by the Lich King. The “cry for help” was a Scourge trap.

The Scourge aren’t just imprisoning storm giants. They’re harvesting their corpses to build flesh giants, or worse, stitching them together into monstrosities like Thrym, the zone’s enormous flesh titan.

Thrym was created by Prince Navarius, a San’layn (darkfallen) warlord. Thrym is one of the tallest creatures in the entire game and can be seen from enormous distances.

The Gymer chain culminates in The Storm King’s Vengeance, one of WotLK’s most memorable quest experiences. You ride on Gymer’s head as a vehicle, controlling his abilities to smash 100 Scourge and kill three named bosses: Algar the Chosen, Prince Navarius, and Thrym himself.

Thrym only spawns after Navarius is killed, yelling “MASTER! NO!” before attacking.

Norse mythology runs deep here: Thrym’s name references the frost giant who stole Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. The area name “Thrym’s End” is both a location and a promise.

The giant filled the cage. Even bound, Gymer radiated power like a storm waiting to break.

“You do not reek of the ancient death. Perhaps you can be trusted.” He studied me through the bars. “I am Gymer, king of the storm giants. I was lured here by my brother, Thiassi, now an undead servant of the Lich King. By the time I realized that his cry for help was a trap, it was too late.”

Brother against brother, the Scourge’s favorite corruption.

Reed was all that remained of the Crusader Forward Camp’s engineering team. “A storm giant? That sounds risky.” He rubbed his face. “On the other hand, we don’t have too many other options. Get your giant friend to help us deal with Navarius, and I’ll figure out how to break those locks.”

Desperate men make useful allies.

Reed had a plan for the locks, and Gymer had a promise to keep. The rescue operation began in Gymer’s Salvation
