Walkthrough

Engineer Reed needs materials to build a Jumbo Seaforium Charge capable of weakening a 100-foot cage. You’re collecting two ingredients from opposite directions.

Banshee Essence (6) — Northeast

• Kill Banshee Soulclaimers in the Dead Fields around [28, 59]. Look for trees with green energy swirling around them.
• Warning for melee: These banshees hover above melee range. Aggro them (mounting helps) and move away so they follow and descend to ground level. They also curse you with a ~50% hit chance reduction, which makes melee combat miserable.
• Drop rate is inconsistent. If nothing drops after 20+ kills, try abandoning the quest, leaving Zul’Drak, re-entering, and re-accepting.

Diatomaceous Earth (6) — Southwest

• Kill Icetouched Earthragers southwest of the camp, near Ebon Watch [14, 73]. Main cluster is around [12, 76] behind Ebon Watch.
• There is a less-contested path up a hill at [14.7, 76.7] with 4-5 additional spawns.
• Drop rate is generally better than Banshees. Level 75 Earthragers had near 100% drop rate vs. roughly 30% from level 74 ones.
• Melee caution: Earthragers cast Avalanche, an AoE ground ability. Pull smaller groups than usual.

Efficiency Tips

• Start with Banshees at [28, 59] (northeast of camp) since they’re closer and have the worse drop rate. Get the RNG out of the way first.
• Then head southwest to Ebon Watch for Earthragers, which tend to drop faster.
• If you haven’t grabbed the Ebon Watch flight path yet, pick it up at [14, 73] while you’re in the area.

Lore Context

Reed’s engineering plan uses banshee essence as a “plasticizer” and diatomaceous earth as a “stabilizer” for the Jumbo Seaforium Charge.

The real-life science checks out: diatomaceous earth was actually a key component in Alfred Nobel’s invention of dynamite, used to stabilize volatile nitroglycerin.

The NPC Crusader MacKellar standing next to Reed is likely a nod to MacGyver, the TV character famous for improvising solutions from everyday materials. Reed is essentially MacGyvering explosives from banshee ghosts and rock dust.
