“They… They killed my brother.
<Gerk fights back tears.>
Slaughtered him like he was some sort of animal. Now they got him laid out on one of their tables on the other side of the camp, ready for their grisly experiments. Dargath’s dead too. The paladin made a heroic stand at the ruins to the northeast, but the leader of the Vargul, Algar, was too strong. I’m all that’s left and I’ll be dead soon too. I… I’m turning.
If the Light won’t grant me vengeance, maybe you will, Warrior. Kill them all.”

Lore Context
Gerk is a dwarf member of an Argent Crusade scouting party sent from Crusader Forward Camp. The party was wiped out at Thrym’s End: his brother was killed and laid out for experimentation, the paladin Dargath fell fighting the Vargul leader Algar the Chosen, and Gerk himself was captured and left to dissolve in a vat of Scourge slime. He knows he’s dying and “turning,” so vengeance is all he has left.
The vargul are undead vrykul who failed the Lich King’s ascension trials at Jotunheim in Icecrown. Those who passed became the elite Ymirjar; those who didn’t were raised as lesser undead. Unlike mindless Scourge, Vargul retain enough intelligence to resent their fate, which makes them more dangerous and unpredictable than standard undead fodder.
Gerk’s dying words drive this home: if these are the rejects the Lich King deemed unworthy, imagine how powerful the chosen must be. It’s a quiet bit of foreshadowing for the Ymirjar and Icecrown Citadel content ahead.

Vikstone's War JournalI found Gerk half-submerged in a vat of something that hissed where it touched his skin. The green liquid climbed his chest like a slow tide, and his face had gone the color of old snow.

“They killed my brother.” His voice came thin. “Slaughtered him like he was some sort of animal. Now they got him laid out on their tables.” He fought the tears. “If the Light won’t grant me vengeance, maybe you will. Kill them all.”
So I did.
The Vargul died in ones and twos across Thrym’s End, my mace finding that which grief demands. When I returned, Gerk was barely breathing.
“They say these Vargul are the ones not worthy enough for the Lich King,” he said. “Can you imagine? Just think how powerful the worthy must be.” His eyes found mine one last time. “I’ll say a prayer for you in the hereafter, hero.”
Then the light went out of them. Some prayers the Light never answers.
The Dead Fields had claimed three more crusaders, and the war kept grinding north, starting with a supply problem that required jumping out of a perfectly good airplane in Parachutes for the Argent Crusade.
