Culling Jorcuttar

Quest Giver: King Jokkum — Dun Niffelem, Storm Peaks [65, 60]

Objective: Slay Jorcuttar, a jormungar spawnmother, inside Hibernal Cavern.

Walkthrough

Step 1: Enter Hibernal Cavern

• The cave entrance is southwest of Dun Niffelem at [55.8, 64.0] at ground level. King Jokkum provides the Everfrost Razor when you accept the quest.

Step 2: Carve a Bear Flank

• Inside the cave, look for Dead Icemaw Bear corpses on the ground. Use the Everfrost Razor on them.
• If you get the message “Flank is frozen solid,” that bear has been dead too long. Move on to the next one.
• When you find a freshly spawned bear, you’ll create an Icemaw Bear Flank that goes directly into your bags (no loot window appears). Check your inventory if you’re unsure whether it worked.
• The trick: If every bear gives the “frozen solid” message, carve through them to despawn the old corpses, then wait for fresh ones to respawn. Fresh bears have a much higher success rate.

Step 3: Summon and Kill Jorcuttar

• Head to the back of the cave where you’ll find a pit area with disturbed rocks and snow (around [54, 60] on the map). This is Jorcuttar’s crater.
• Use the Icemaw Bear Flank near the crater. Jorcuttar will emerge shortly after.
• Jorcuttar is a large jormungar with two abilities: Acid Spit (ranged Nature damage) and Sweep (AoE melee that hits within 15 yards and knocks back). Soloable by most level 77-80 characters. Melee players should be prepared for the knockback.

Step 4: Turn In

• Return to King Jokkum in Dun Niffelem.

Efficiency Tips

• Make sure you have bag space. The Icemaw Bear Flank goes directly into your inventory. If your bags are full, the bear will despawn and you’ll have wasted the carve.
• Don’t kill bears. The bears in the cave are already dead. You just use the razor on their corpses. You don’t need to fight anything to obtain the flank.
• Do alongside A Viscous Cleaning. If you have the daily quest to kill Viscous Oils in this same cave, knock both out in one trip.

Jormungar Bestiary

The jormungar are a great bestiary opportunity because most players just see “big worm” and move on, but there’s surprisingly deep lore here:

• Nerubian slave labor origin. Legends say the nerubians used jormungar as living tunnel borers, forcing them to carve the massive subterranean networks that became the nerubian empire’s foundation. When the empire fell to the Scourge, swarms of masterless jormungar ran wild across Northrend, devouring everything in their path.
• Children of Loken. The frost vrykul Astrid Bjornrittar calls the jormungar “the children of Loken” during the quest The Slithering Darkness. This mirrors the Norse mythology source: Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, was one of three children of Loki. Since Loken’s name is itself a Loki reference, Blizzard layered the mythology cleanly here.
• Spawnmother biology. Each jormungar brood is led by a spawnmother living deep underground. Jorcuttar is one of these. King Jokkum warns they “breed like hares and spread like fire,” which is why eliminating a spawnmother is the priority rather than picking off individual worms.
• Saronite-melting acid. Jormungar acid is potent enough to dissolve saronite, the virtually indestructible ore infused with Yogg-Saron’s blood.
• Life cycle stages. Jormungar go through distinct phases: egg sac → tunneler (larva) → full jormungar → jormungar wyrm (the massive, partially submerged variant). Jorcuttar as a spawnmother represents the apex of this cycle.

Raid Connection (Trial of the Crusader)

This is your cross-expansion connection angle. Jormungar show up as a boss encounter later in WotLK itself:

• Acidmaw and Dreadscale are the “twin jormungar” in the Beasts of Northrend encounter, the opening fight of Trial of the Crusader. Tirion describes them as hailing from “the deepest, darkest caverns of the Storm Peaks.” Acidmaw and Dreadscale are proof of what happens when jormungar are allowed to fully mature.
• The achievement Not One, But Two Jormungars became a community meme after Blizzard’s original announcement hyped “not one, but two jormungar wyrms” as a raid boss, and players found that underwhelming compared to Ulduar’s cosmic-scale encounters.

WotLK Classic vs. Original WotLK

• Both the quest and the NPC were renamed in retail Patch 9.1.5 (November 2021) as part of a broad content sensitivity pass. The original quest name was “Jormuttar is Soo Fat…” and the NPC was called Jormuttar. WotLK Classic launched in 2022 with the new names already in place.
• The original name was a “Yo Mama is so fat…” joke, with “Jormuttar” being a play on “your mother.” The community ran with it.
• Several other Sons of Hodir quests received similar renames in the same patch, including “Blowing Hodir’s Horn” → “Hodir’s Call,” “Polishing the Helm” → “A Viscous Cleaning,” and “Thrusting Hodir’s Spear” → “How To Slay Your Dragon.”
