Astrid calls the jormungar “children of Loken, Thorim’s scumsucker of a brother.” This is a rare moment where the Hyldnir explicitly express loyalty to Thorim and contempt for Loken, which is deeply ironic given that Lok’lira, who has been guiding you this entire chain, is actually Loken in disguise.
In Norse mythology, Loki fathered Jörmungandr, and jormungar is Blizzard’s word for the same creature.
Astrid is unknowingly sending you to kill the spawn of the very being who has been manipulating the entire Hyldsmeet.
The jormungar infestation is what drove the icemaw bears to near-extinction in the cave, directly setting up the stakes for The Last of Her Kind. Clearing them out is both a service to Astrid and a practical necessity for the bear population.

Loken. I kept note of the name.
Lok’lira had spoken to me at length about Thorim by then. His stature, his exile, his rightful place, what becomes of the world if he fails to retake Ulduar. She had never once mentioned that he has a brother.
Going into that cave the second time was different. The first trip had a bear at the end of it. This one had nothing at the end of it but Astrid’s satisfaction, and she had not asked me to clear the cavern, or make the road safe, or bring anything out. She had asked me to kill eight of Loken’s children on the grounds that they were his.
So I killed eight. They came out of the walls the same way they had the day before and they went down the same way.
“You’ve returned! The jormungar are vile creatures. You did well in destroying them,” Astrid said.
Vikstone had a bear, a harness, and a name he did not yet have a use for, and Astrid was not sending anyone into the pit untested, which made the next fight The Warm-Up.
