Quest Giver: Colvin Norrington — Dorian’s Outpost, Sholazar Basin [42, 28]

Objective: Collect 5 Hydra Sputum Samples using the Sample Container AND kill 5 Bittertide Hydra. (Dual objective.)

Walkthrough

• Fly southwest from Dorian’s Outpost to Bittertide Lake, a large lake in northwestern Sholazar fed by a river from the North Sea. Bittertide Hydras (level 75-76) swim throughout the lake and patrol along its banks.
• Engage a hydra in melee range and wait for it to apply its Hydra Sputum debuff (Nature damage, 2 damage every 3 seconds for 20 seconds). Once you see the debuff on yourself, use the Sample Container to collect the sample. The container removes the debuff when used.
• Then kill the hydra. You need both 5 samples AND 5 kills. Finish each hydra after collecting its sample.
• Important: Hydras appear to only cast Sputum once per encounter and only at melee range. If you miss the window, you’ll need to engage a new hydra.

Pet Class Warning (Critical)

• Hunters, Warlocks, Unholy Death Knights: This quest is notoriously frustrating for pet classes. Hydras will spit on whatever is closest in melee, and you cannot collect samples from your pet’s debuff, only your own.
• Solution: Dismiss your pet or set it to Passive before pulling. Let the hydra target you and apply Sputum to you personally, then use the container. You can resummon or set the pet to Attack after collecting the sample.
• Hunters can use Distracting Shot to redirect the hydra’s attention back to themselves if the pet grabs aggro.

Efficiency Tips

• Pair with Reagent Agent and My Pet Roc for a single quest loop: hit Bittertide Lake first (southwest), then fly northeast to the Bonefields for rocs.
• If you’re on an Oracle quest that grants Jaloot as a companion (like The Lost Mistwhisper Treasure), his Jaloot’s Intensity buff gives 100% swim speed, making lake navigation much faster.
• Don’t burst hydras down too fast. If you kill one before it casts Sputum, you get the kill credit but waste a sample opportunity.

Easter Egg: The Lost Hatch

• On a small island in the middle of Bittertide Lake, around [38, 37], there’s a hatch embedded in the ground with a glowing window. Mousing over it reveals the numbers 5 9 16 17 24 43. This is a reference to the TV series Lost (2004-2010), where a mysterious hatch and a recurring number sequence (4 8 15 16 23 42) are central plot elements.
• The WoW numbers are each incremented by one. Fittingly, “Hydra” is also is the name of one of the DHARMA Initiative stations on the Lost island.

Lore Context

Like Reagent Agent, this quest is part of Colvin Norrington’s side mission collecting reagents for Archmage Pentarus in Dalaran. The Kirin Tor’s interest in Sholazar’s exotic flora and fauna extends beyond academic curiosity; the basin’s unique ecosystem, preserved by the Titans through the Waygate and Pillar system, produces reagents found nowhere else on Azeroth.

Bittertide Lake gets its name from the salt water flowing in from the North Sea, making it a rare brackish lake. It drains over Bittertide Falls (approximately [46, 46]) into the River’s Heart below.

Cross-Expansion Connection

• Bittertide Hydra appears as an epic minion card in Hearthstone’s Journey to Un’Goro expansion, which drew heavily from both Un’Goro Crater and Sholazar Basin (the two zones are linked by a Titan Waygate). The Hearthstone version is depicted as a four-legged Draenic hydra rather than the two-legged Azerothian variety seen in Sholazar.
• Patch 6.0.2 (Warlords of Draenor): Bittertide Hydras became tameable by Hunters as exotic pets, adding another reason to revisit this lake years later.
