“There’s one little problem we have to solve before we head out. You see, I can’t seem to find the keys to my flying machine. I’ve looked pretty much everywhere for them… maybe you can give me a hand. Only place I haven’t looked yet is inside the lake. I’ll even give you my very own air tank. It’s almost empty, but it’s got a couple of hits left.”

Lore Context
Pilot Vic is a Cold Weather Flying trainer, and this quest sets up the follow-up Reconnaissance Flight, where you co-pilot his flying machine northeast toward the Avalanche. He can’t fly without the keys to his plane, making this a prerequisite for both the flight quest and, narratively, for opening the Lakeside Landing flight path.
River’s Heart is a geological anomaly: a lake sitting below sea level where all four rivers of Sholazar Basin converge before draining down waterfalls into the basin. Muradin Bronzebeard called it “a puzzle and a mystery” in Exploring Azeroth: Northrend, speculating the water may flow into an enormous underground river system. The lake is infested with Stranded Threshers washed in from the sea via the rivers.
Explore Sholazar Basin’s hidden easter eggs, lore mysteries, and connections across Warcraft history in Vikstone’s Sholazar Basin Chronicles, along with the complete quest storyline.
Vikstone's War JournalLakeside Landing. New outpost, new faces. Pilot Vic had a problem.

Naturally the one place left to search was underwater.
“I’ll even give you my very own air tank. It’s almost empty, but it’s got a couple of hits left.”
The tank wheezed when he handed it over. Reassuring.
River’s Heart was clear enough to see the bottom, which meant seeing every mud pile that might contain keys. Also seeing every siltslither eel that definitely didn’t. The eels took exception to having their homes disturbed, and they made a thorough case for it. After the third one tried to remove my fingers, understood why Vic hadn’t retrieved these keys himself.
Tank made dying sounds with each breath. Found keys in the last pile checked, naturally, just as the air gave out.
Surfaced. Handed them over.
“Excellent!”
Wrung lake water from my armor while Vic shook the tank next to his ear, listening for whatever gnomes listen for.
“Next time,” I suggested, “maybe keep them attached before takeoff?”
He was already heading toward his flying machine. Didn’t answer. Probably for the best.
Vic had his keys back and no intention of discussing how they ended up underwater, which left only the small matter of getting airborne in Reconnaissance Flight.
