The Primordial Drakes are wild proto-dragons, the ancient ancestors of all modern dragonflights. These creatures predate the titan Keepers’ ordering of Azeroth. According to Muradin Bronzebeard (via Exploring Azeroth: Northrend), the Savage Thicket may be where proto-dragons first originated, though he notes this is only a theory.
Their queen, Broodmother Slivina, is the target of the later quest Post-partum Aggression. The Savage Thicket is described as similar to Ember Clutch in Howling Fjord, another proto-dragon nesting ground where the vrykul capture drakes to use as mounts.

Proto-dragons. Not the intelligent dragonflights, but predators stripped down to hunger and flame.
Different tactics than rhinos or cats. They spit flame from range, so closing distance matters. Wings give them mobility, but they’re clumsy on the ground once committed. The scales are thick, but the joints flex. The neck turns slow.
Learned these lessons across six kills. Took burns on my forearms from the first one before I understood the timing. By the sixth, I knew how to slip their flame and strike before they could reposition.
Returned to Dorian with singed armor and new knowledge.
“I can hear the confidence in your words. Good, the experience will come in handy when we face the queen of the drakes.”
Of course there was a queen.
Dorian was satisfied, and whatever came next, he promised, would make the drakes look small, which was saying something given the size of A Mammoth Undertaking.
