That’s Abominable!

Quest 3 of 6 in the Aldur'thar Offensive Chain Daily Quest
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • The Skybreaker
Use a Reanimated Abomination to kill 15 Icy Ghouls, 15 Vicious Geists, and 15 Risen Soldiers.
Kill Hulking Abominations near 69, 62 until one drops guts, which you can only carry one of at a time, then walk to the packed ground around 67, 61 before using the kit. Nothing you kill yourself counts here. Only the explosion does. Stay within about ten yards of the abomination when it bursts or you get no credit at all. Gather six to ten mobs, no more, and have an exit ready because whatever survives comes straight for you. Expect three to five trips for all forty-five.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Some of the things Vikstone blew apart that morning were still wearing Stormwind's lion on their tabards. Thassarian called it ingenuity, and he was right.

“You know what to do, Warrior. Take this kit and use the guts from their abominations to create one of your own, then command it to atatack the enemy forces at the gate. You would do well to refine this tactic for when we make another assault on the gate.”

-Thassarian

Walkthrough

Quest Giver (Alliance): Thassarian — The Skybreaker, Icecrown

Quest Giver (Horde): Koltira Deathweaver — Orgrim’s Hammer, Icecrown

Objective: Use the Abomination Reanimation Kit to create a Reanimated Abomination, then use it to kill 15 Icy Ghouls, 15 Vicious Geists, and 15 Risen Alliance Soldiers (Alliance) or Risen Horde Soldiers (Horde) at the Broken Front near Mord’rethar.

Quick Facts

  • Type: One-time quest, then becomes a daily
  • Level: 80
  • Prerequisite: Poke and Prod (Alliance)/Poke and Prod (Horde)
  • Unlocks: Sneak Preview and the chain leading to the Bombardment dailies. Also becomes a repeatable daily quest with the same name.

Walkthrough

Finding Thassarian: land on the Skybreaker’s deck, face the main cabin with the yellow windows, and take the stairs up the right side. He waits on the landing. Koltira is at the bottom of Orgrim’s Hammer’s banner ramp, on the left.

Step 1: Get the Guts

  • Kill Hulking Abominations at the Broken Front (around [69, 62]) and loot Chilled Abomination Guts. You can only carry one set of guts at a time.

Step 2: Summon Your Abomination

  • Pet classes (Hunters, Warlocks, Death Knights): Dismiss your pet first. Using the Reanimation Kit while a pet is active will consume the guts, give an error, and put the kit on cooldown. This is the single most common source of frustration with this quest.
  • Use the Abomination Reanimation Kit from your inventory. A pet action bar will appear with the abomination’s abilities. If the bar doesn’t appear, type /reload to fix it.

Step 3: Send It In and Detonate

  • The Reanimated Abomination has these abilities:
    • Attack/Follow/Stay: Standard pet controls (slots 1-3).
    • Flatulence (slot 4): AoE damage that hits nearby mobs. Use this to gather and soften groups.
    • Burst at the Seams (slot 5): The abomination explodes, killing itself and dealing massive damage to all nearby enemies. This is how you get quest credit.
  • Send the abomination into a cluster of quest mobs (Icy Ghouls, Vicious Geists, and Risen Soldiers are all packed around [67, 61] near Mord’rethar’s gate). Let it gather 6-10 mobs using Flatulence, then detonate with Burst at the Seams.
  • Repeat: Go kill another Hulking Abomination for more guts and do it again. Most players need 3-5 detonations to finish all 45 kills.

Combat Tips and Common Pitfalls

  • Stay close to your abomination. You must be within range when it explodes to receive kill credit. Multiple players have reported getting zero credit when standing too far away. Stay about 10-15 yards from the detonation.
  • Don’t pull too many. 6-10 mobs per pull is the sweet spot. Pulling 15+ can cause credit issues and also means more surviving mobs chasing you after the explosion.
  • Healers can extend the abomination’s life with direct heals, shields, and HoTs. A priest can bubble, renew, and Prayer of Mending the abomination to let it gather significantly larger packs.
  • Mounted strategy: You can mount up while the abomination is active (though you cannot use its abilities while mounted). Some players mount up, fly over groups to let the abomination trail through and aggro mobs, then dismount and immediately detonate. Risky but fast.
  • After the explosion, surviving mobs or newly aggro’d enemies will target you. Druids can shift to flight form, rogues can Vanish, and everyone else should have an escape plan ready or be prepared to fight.

Efficiency Tips

  • This becomes a daily quest after the first completion. On the daily version, there are no gear rewards, just gold and XP.
  • The Hulking Abominations you need for guts are the same ones you killed for Poke and Prod. Same area, same mobs.
  • If you’re a tank, you can skip the abomination’s gathering phase entirely. Round up the mobs yourself using your own survivability, pop defensive cooldowns, then summon the abomination and immediately detonate it on the group around you.

Bestiary: The Broken Front Scourge

  • Icy Ghouls: Melee attackers, low health, tend to cluster in large packs. The easiest targets for your abomination to gather.
  • Vicious Geists: Fast-moving, erratic melee mobs. Their speed means they aggro onto your abomination quickly, which is actually helpful for gathering.
  • Risen Alliance Soldiers/Risen Horde Soldiers: The reanimated dead from the Broken Front battle. Your own faction’s fallen soldiers, now raised by the Scourge. The quest forces you to destroy what the Lich King made of your comrades.
  • Hulking Abominations: The gut source. Melee-only with high health. Kill these first to get your reagent, then move to the quest mob area.

Lore Context

Thassarian is candid about abomination tactics. As a former death knight who served the Scourge, he knows how abominations are created and controlled, and he’s teaching you to use the Lich King’s own weapons against him.

His framing is that abominations “are not deep thinkers” and will follow basic orders without question.

The Risen Alliance/Horde Soldiers you destroy are the dead from the Broken Front battle (from The Broken Front questline). The Lich King raised them as Scourge minions, turning both factions’ casualties into defenders of his gate. This is an example of why the dying soldiers in Finish Me! begged to be killed before the Scourge could claim their bodies.

Warrior IconVikstone's War Journal

“Abominations…” Thassarian said. “They can be a very capable enemy. I’ve seen them turn the tide of battle more than once. What few realize, is that they can also be very capable friends. They are not deep thinkers. If you know the secrets of their creation, you can issue them basic orders that they will not question. Fortunately for you, I know these secrets. This kit will reanimate the remains of the abominations you defeat. Take it, and learn to use them against the Scourge on the death gate.”

I want the record to be clear about what he handed me, because I took it without arguing and I would rather not be able to pretend later that I misunderstood.

The kit does not build anything. It raises what you have already killed.

So I went down to the field and opened a Hulking Abomination along its seams the way I had learned to two days before, and then I knelt in what came out of it and did what the kit required, and the thing I had just killed stood back up. Rusted hooks. Somebody’s arm sewn to somebody else’s shoulder. It turned and waited for me to tell it what to do.

I told it. It did not question the order. That is the part he thought was worth mentioning twice.

It went into the ghouls first and they came apart, and it took the geists off it the way a man brushes off dogs, and then it walked into a line of risen soldiers wearing Stormwind’s lion on tabards gone green with corrosion.

When the abomination came apart I made another out of the next one. Then another. It got faster each time.

“Well? Did your abomination friends prove effective?”

They did.

“You see? Ingenuity can sometimes even the odds against a seemingly overwhelming enemy.”

Stitched corpses handled the rank and file well enough, but there were things standing at that gate no explosion was going to reach, and taking the death gate meant someone had to go up Against the Giants.
