Quest 2 of 3 in the Broken Front Chain
Alliance • Icecrown • Level 80 • The Broken Front
Grant 5 Dying Soldiers a clean death, then report to High Captain Justin Bartlett.
Take this from the same soldier you questioned, though you may need to try several before one offers it. The dying are scattered loose across the whole battlefield around 69, 66 rather than clustered anywhere. Turn on friendly nameplates before you start looking. They are prone on the ground among a great many corpses that are not interactive, and finding them by eye is the only slow part of a quest that otherwise takes about a minute.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Not one of the five argued. Bartlett told him to take the sorrow and aim it at the Horde, and Vikstone let the captain believe that was where it was going.

“They taunt us – even as they lie dying here…

Please, brother… Don’t allow their mocking to be the last sounds I hear…

Finish me… deliver me from this torment… into… the Light.

Seek out my companions… offer them the same mercy.

Leave nothing for the Scourge to raise!

I beg you…”

Quest Giver (Horde): Dying Berserker — The Broken Front, Icecrown [70.7, 68.5]

Turn In (Alliance): High Captain Justin Bartlett — The Skybreaker

Turn In (Horde): Sky-Reaver Korm Blackscar — Orgrim’s Hammer

Objective:

  • Alliance (Finish Me!): Kill 5 Dying Soldiers (your own wounded allies) as a mercy killing.
  • Horde (Avenge Me!): Kill 5 Dying Soldiers (wounded Alliance enemies) as revenge.

Walkthrough

  • Pick this quest up from the same dying NPC you questioned for The Broken Front. You may need to speak to multiple dying NPCs before one offers the quest.
  • Alliance: Talk to your faction’s Dying Soldiers to grant them a mercy killing. Select the dialogue option to “finish” them.
  • Horde: Attack and kill the Dying Alliance Soldiers scattered across the battlefield. Note that killing them flags you for PvP.
  • The dying NPCs can be hard to spot. Turn on friendly NPC nameplates (Shift+V by default) or use /target Dying Soldier to locate them, then set a raid marker for easier tracking.
  • You can complete this quest while mounted without dismounting, making it one of the fastest quests in Icecrown. Should take about 60 seconds.

Efficiency Tips

  • Always grab this during The Broken Front since you’re already at the battlefield. Both quests complete in the same area with no additional travel.

Lore Context

The two faction versions of this quest tell a remarkably different story through identical mechanics. The Alliance version is a solemn mercy killing. Your soldiers beg to be finished off so the Scourge cannot raise them as undead. The dying soldier’s plea is haunting: he asks you to deliver him “into the Light” and to leave nothing for the Scourge to raise.

The turn-in dialogue from High Captain Bartlett acknowledges the emotional cost, telling you not to let it haunt you.

The Horde version is pure vengeance. The dying berserker hears the moaning of wounded Alliance soldiers and asks you to finish what the Horde started.

Korm Blackscar’s turn-in is chilling: “The time of tolerance for the Alliance has passed. They have earned our hatred! They shall live in fear of the Horde until they no longer pollute our world!”

The Horde attacked the Alliance from behind, and yet the dying Horde soldiers frame themselves as victims who need avenging, while the dying Alliance soldiers (the ones who were actually ambushed) ask only for a clean death.

The Scourge do not shut up. That is the part nobody tells you about a field they have not finished clearing. They wander it calling out, in the voices they have collected, at men who cannot get up.

“They taunt us,” the soldier said. “Even as they lie dying here.”

He had been holding my forearm since I knelt.

Leave nothing for the Scourge to raise.

I gave him what he asked for and it took four seconds.

Then I walked the field.

Not one of them argued. One asked me to be quick and I was. One would not look at me and I let him not look. One thanked me, which I had not prepared for. The last was young enough that I checked twice that he understood the question, and he did.

“That was a difficult thing you did,” Bartlett said. “But it was the right thing. Don’t allow the memory of your actions to haunt you. Harness that sorrow and pain you feel! Direct it at those who caused it. The Horde must pay!”

The Skybreaker would reissue every morning for as long as the Horde flew that airspace, filed under No Mercy!
