“Our people are being captured and put to work as slaves in the saronite mines of Ymirheim, the vrykul stronghold in the middle of Icecrown. The Lich King has them mining that unholy ore day and night. I made a promise to Highlord Fordring that we would get those wretches out of there alive, and that’s exactly what we will do.
Unfortunately, I’ve been ordered to stay on this gunship and serve as an ambassador to the Valiance Expedition. Will you please rescue them in my stead, Vikstone?”
-Absalan the Pious
Absalan the Pious aboard the Skybreaker wants you to rescue 10 Saronite Mine Slaves.
![Quest Giver: Knight-Captain Drosche (Alliance) or Sky-Reaver Korm Blackscar (Horde)
Location: The Skybreaker (Alliance) or Orgrim’s Hammer (Horde), Icecrown
Locate the Mine Entrance:
The mine entrance is at [57, 57], in the middle of Ymirheim.
Free the Miners:
Speak to enslaved miners and choose the “You’re free!” dialogue option.
Miners will respond in one of three ways:
Run away (counts as a successful rescue).
Go berserk and attack you.
Rant and jump off the ledge (may still count as rescued if you’re quick).
Clear the Area:
Before speaking to miners, kill nearby Taskmistresses and guards.
Clearing the area increases the chance of miners running free.
React Quickly:
If a miner starts ranting and running, you can interact with them again before they jump off.
Sometimes, this will still give credit for freeing them.](https://gamertribute.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Slaves-to-Saronite-Map.png)

Lore & Secrets
What is Saronite?
Saronite is the crystallized blood of Yogg-Saron, the Old God of Death imprisoned beneath Ulduar in the Storm Peaks. The tuskarr of Dragonblight call it the “Black Blood of Yogg-Saron,” and they’re not being metaphorical.
Every piece of saronite ore in Northrend is a physical piece of an Old God’s body, seeping up through the earth from his prison.
Prolonged exposure to saronite drives people insane. The “beautiful voices” the mine slaves hear are Yogg-Saron’s whispers, the same whispers that corrupted Keeper Loken, poisoned the World Tree Vordrassil in Grizzly Hills, and ultimately tainted every living thing that spent too much time near saronite deposits.
Absalan is alarmed that both the slaves and you are hearing voices, and insists you rest before returning. His progress line is bleaker still, since he has not heard of any freed men reaching the Argent Vanguard and asks whether you went at all. He does not yet know the rescues are failing on the far end.
The Lich King built Icecrown Citadel itself from saronite, as well as the massive gate Angrathar the Wrathgate in Dragonblight. His armor, weapons, and fortifications throughout Icecrown are all forged from this corrupted metal. The mines beneath Ymirheim feed the Scourge’s entire war machine.
The Deeper Horror
What makes saronite especially insidious is that the Lich King knowingly uses an Old God’s body as his primary building material, even though Yogg-Saron and the Scourge are not allies.
The Old God’s whispers potentially corrupt anyone who works with saronite, meaning the Lich King’s own soldiers and slaves are slowly being driven mad by a force that serves neither side. Whether the Lich King considers this an acceptable cost or simply cannot find an alternative material strong enough for his purposes is one of WotLK’s unanswered questions.

Vikstone's War Journal“Our people are being captured and put to work as slaves in the saronite mines of Ymirheim,” Absalan said. “The Lich King has them mining that unholy ore day and night. I made a promise to Highlord Fordring that we would get those wretches out of there alive, and that’s exactly what we will do. Unfortunately, I’ve been ordered to stay on this gunship and serve as an ambassador to the Valiance Expedition. Will you please rescue them in my stead, boy?”

The mine goes down under Ymirheim in galleries too low for me. Saronite comes out of that rock black with green through it and it does not take the torchlight the way ore should.
Then the whispering started, and it was not the wind.
Your death approaches. All flesh must feed the one true king.
The slaves are chained to the seams. You strike the chain and tell them to go, and then you find out what is left in them. Some ran, and I could hear which ones because they kept running past the point where running was necessary. One laughed, a wet sound with no joy anywhere in it, and came at me with his pick up, and I put him down as gently as a man can put down another man with a mace in his hand. One woman looked at the open gallery behind her, then turned and walked further in, toward the noise, unhurried. I called after her and I did not follow her.
The overseers were the easy part of the day. Narrow passages suit a warrior with a short temper and two weapons.
“I haven’t received many reports of our men returning to the Argent Vanguard,” Absalan said when I made my report. “Are you sure you’ve been to Ymirheim to free them?”
He thought I was lying.
“They’re being driven insane? Voices in their heads? Voices in your head?! I want you to clear your mind of the taint that has crept into that place. We’ll try to get the remainder of them out of there again tomorrow when you’ve had a chance to rest.”
His promise to the Highlord was to get them out alive. Ten came out alive. He is going to spend the rest of tonight working out whether that is the same thing as keeping it.
The whispering thinned on the flight up and stopped somewhere over the glacier. I have been telling myself it stopped.
Absalan wanted the miners out and the Argent Crusade wanted something else entirely from that mountain, because whatever the Lich King had done to make the Ymirjar what they are is carried in them still, and proving it meant taking Blood of the Chosen.
