Blood of the Chosen

Quest 2 of 2 in the Saronite Mines Chain (Finale) Daily Quest
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • The Skybreaker
Kill 20 vrykul in Ymirheim.
Never run this one on its own. Every vrykul in Ymirheim counts except the Val'kyr in the mines, which means the ambush waves from Assault by Ground and the guards you pass on the way through the saronite tunnels all feed the same twenty. Take this off the airship before you go down and it finishes itself. Pulling a lone Defender brings friends, which is a gift to anyone who can cleave and a problem for anyone who cannot. On the escort, tag each wave early or the soldiers take your credit.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Drosche wanted the Ymirjar's reputation dismantled in front of them, which is a different order from killing twenty of anything. Vikstone stopped counting somewhere around twelve.

“Those vrykul that have gained the favor of the Lich King call themselves the Ymirjar. They inhabit a city in the center of Icecrown. We have a lot of preparations to make before we assault Icecrown Citadel, and the one that stands before us now is routing these so-called “Chosen” of the Lich King.

Go to their city, Ymirheim, and slaughter them in their home. Let there be no questions as to who the stronger combatants are here.”

-Knight-Captain Drosche

Objective

LEVEL

80

Requires level

77

Knight-Captain Drosche on the Skybreaker has sent you to kill 20 vrykul in Ymirheim.

  • Ymirheim Vrykul slain (20)

Quest Giver: Knight-Captain Drosche (Alliance) or Sky-Reaver Korm Blackscar (Horde)
Location: The Skybreaker (Alliance) or Orgrim’s Hammer (Horde), Icecrown
Head to Ymirheim:
The Vrykul mobs are located around [56, 53], near the saronite mine in Ymirheim.
Look for Ymirheim Vrykul such as Defenders, Harpooners, and other guards.
Pair with Other Quests:
This quest is efficient to pair with Assault by Ground, as the Ymirheim Defenders encountered during that escort count toward the kill total.
Combine with Slaves to Saronite if heading into the mine.
Avoid Unnecessary Trouble:
Avoid attacking Ymirheim Defenders unless you're doing Assault by Ground, as they summon additional mobs when attacked.
Stick to other mobs like Ymirheim Harpooners to avoid being overwhelmed.
Quest Giver: Knight-Captain Drosche — The Skybreaker, Icecrown (top rear deck)
Head to Ymirheim: Any vrykul mob in Ymirheim counts, including Ymirheim Chosen Warriors, Harpooners, and other guards. The only exception is the Val’kyr Taskmistresses inside the Saronite Mines, which do not count.
Pair with Other Quests: Pair with Assault by Ground, as the Ymirheim Defenders encountered during that escort count toward the kill total. Combine with Slaves to Saronite if heading into the mine.

Objective: Kill 20 vrykul in Ymirheim.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

  • Any vrykul mob in Ymirheim counts, including Ymirheim Chosen Warriors, Harpooners, and other guards. The only exception is the Val’kyr Taskmistresses inside the Saronite Mines, which do not count.
  • The vrykul that ambush you during Assault by Ground all count toward this quest, as do any vrykul you kill inside the mines while working on Slaves to Saronite.
  • 20 kills is a higher-than-average count for a WotLK daily. If you’re doing this solo without pairing it with other Ymirheim dailies, expect it to take longer than a typical kill quest.
  • Horde players get a different sign-off from Warbringer Davos Rioht: “Not so strong after all, it seems. The Lich King will get what’s coming for him.”

Combat Tips

  • Ymirheim Chosen Warriors have a Bloodlust ability that heals them on their next 5 melee hits, a Cleave, and a Jump Attack that leaps to the target for heavy damage. The self-heal is the one to watch. If you’re not burning them down quickly, they’ll sustain themselves through it. Burst or interrupt through it.
  • Be careful pulling Ymirheim Defenders on their own. When aggro’d, they spawn roughly 4 additional vrykul to assist them. This is great for AoE classes that can handle the pack, but dangerous for undergeared players or healers soloing in off-spec.
  • AoE classes (Ret Paladins, DKs, Warriors): Pull Defenders intentionally to spawn the extra adds and cleave them all down. You can knock out 5 kills per pull this way, making the 20-kill count go fast.
  • Ranged DPS: Pick off Harpooners and isolated mobs from range to avoid triggering Defender spawns.
  • Healers and tanks in off-spec: Lead the pack during Assault by Ground and open on each wave with damage before the escort NPCs finish mobs off. The escort soldiers do surprisingly good damage and will steal kill credit if you don’t tag mobs early. AoE tagging at the start of each ambush wave is critical.

Efficiency Tips

  • Always pair this with your other Ymirheim dailies. Between the escort mobs from Assault by Ground, the guards inside the saronite mines, and general kills en route to King of the Mountain, you can often finish all 20 kills without going out of your way.
  • If you’re also doing Argent Tournament dailies, Ymirheim vrykul count toward Training in the Field (Aspirant), A Valiant’s Field Training (Valiant), and Taking Battle to the Enemy (Champion). Stack all applicable kill quests before heading down to Ymirheim.
  • A solid daily route: pick up Blood of the Chosen and Slaves to Saronite from your airship, fly to the ground staging area and grab Assault by Ground and Assault by Air, do the ground escort first (tagging every ambush wave for kill credit), then head into the mines for Slaves to Saronite (killing guards along the way), hit up Blast Thunderbomb or Frazzle Geargrinder for King of the Mountain, and finish any remaining vrykul kills on your way out. Board the plane for Assault by Air last, since the parachute landing drops you back near Ymirheim where you can mop up.

There it is, then. I asked on my first day up here what preparation meant, and I have been finding out one errand at a time.

They are all bigger than me and none of them are subtle. An Ymirjar comes at you square, both hands on the haft, and puts everything into the first blow on the theory that there will not need to be a second. Against most men there would not be. What they cannot do is what I spent the escort up the pass doing: fold a shield back across a man’s own body and come around the outside while he is still solving that problem.

The first patrol did not see me. The second did, and set a line, and I went at the line anyway because a line of four is easier than four men loose in a street.

Then it was streets, and doorways, and the black iron towers with the wind coming off them, and it went on longer than it needed to.

Some of these were the same men who jumped the squad in the pass. I recognized armor. Drosche’s tally does not care which ones, and neither, after the first hour, did I.

“The traitor king will fall,” Drosche said afterward. “Of that I have no doubt.”

Twenty Ymirjar settled nothing about the field to the west, where the Alliance had already lost an army once and left it lying where it fell, and someone finally had to go look at what was still moving on The Broken Front.
