King of the Mountain

Quest 2 of 2 in the Ymirheim Jumpbot Chain (Finale) Daily Quest
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • Ymirheim
Use the Jumpbot to plant your faction's Battle Standard in the skulls at the top of the mountain.
Speak to your quest giver a second time after accepting to mount the bot. Ability 3 sits off the global cooldown and has no cooldown of its own, so do not wait to land before firing the next jump. Aim the green circle progressively higher and spam it, and vertical rock stops mattering. Ability 1 plants the standard in the skull pile at the summit near 54, 60. The bot eats all fall damage, so leave by walking off the edge, then dismount before turning in. Accepting flags you for PvP, and ability 2 knocks other players off the peak.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
The machine went up the cliff face in a series of controlled accidents, past vrykul who had no framework for what they were seeing. Vikstone planted a banner in a heap of skulls at the top of the vrykul world and listened to a gnome scream with joy somewhere far below.

“You’ve just got to get my jumpbot to the tippy top of the mountain to the northwest here at Ymirheim pronto, Vikstone! That dastardly, no-good Blast Thunderbomb is working on his own bot, and I’m afraid he almost has it completed. We’re in a race to see who’s gonna be king of the mountain!

Once you jump up there, plant our battle standard in the pile of bones and show everyone that the Alliance, and my engineering skills, are the best!”

Walkthrough

Quest Giver (Alliance): Frazzle Geargrinder — Ymirheim, Icecrown [57.0, 62.6]

Quest Giver (Horde): Blast Thunderbomb — Ymirheim, Icecrown [51.9, 57.6]

Objective: Use your faction’s Jumpbot to reach the summit of the mountain at Ymirheim and plant your faction’s battle standard in the pile of skulls.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Speak to Your Quest Giver and Mount the Jumpbot

  • Alliance players find Frazzle Geargrinder on the east side of Ymirheim [57.0, 62.6]. Horde players find Blast Thunderbomb on the west side [51.9, 57.6].
  • Accept the quest and speak to your quest giver again to mount the Jumpbot.

Jumpbot Controls

  • Ability 1 — Plant Banner: Plants your faction’s battle standard. Only usable at the summit.
  • Ability 2 — Rockets: Fires rockets at a targeted area. These deal minor damage but can knock other players back, which is relevant for PvP encounters at the peak.
  • Ability 3 — Jump Jets: The core ability. Press 3 and aim the green targeting circle at the spot on the mountain where you want to land. The Jumpbot will launch itself to that location.

Climb the Mountain

  • The key mechanic: you do not have to wait for the Jumpbot to land before firing the next jump. Spam ability 3 continuously and aim the green targeting reticle progressively higher up the mountainside. This lets you scale even vertical cliff faces in rapid succession.
  • The mountain is directly behind each quest giver. Frazzle’s quest text says “to the northwest,” Blast’s says “to the southeast,” since they’re stationed on opposite sides of the same peak.

Plant the Flag

  • The skull pile is at the summit, approximately [54, 60]. Use ability 1 to plant your faction’s battle standard and complete the objective.

Return to Your Quest Giver

  • The Jumpbot absorbs all fall damage, so run or jump straight off the mountain. No need to descend carefully.
  • You must dismount the Jumpbot before you can turn in the quest.

Efficiency Tips

  • This is widely considered the fastest daily quest in Icecrown, completable in under two minutes once you’ve practiced the jump mechanics. Worth doing every day for easy gold and reputation.
  • If the targeting reticle feels awkward, use your mouse to aim upward at the mountain face while pressing the 3 key on your keyboard. Think of it less as a “jump” and more like a grappling hook: you’re pulling yourself to wherever the reticle lands.
  • The southwest face, roughly the 8 o’clock position on your minimap, is a gentler line if the direct face gives you trouble, though spam-jumping straight up from behind your quest giver works fine.
  • Pair this with Assault by Air, Assault by Ground, and Slaves to Saronite for a full set of Ymirheim dailies in one trip.
  • This quest flags you for PvP on acceptance, and the flag persists for 5 minutes after quest completion. On PvP servers this is a non-issue, but on PvE servers, be aware that enemy players can engage you while climbing or at the summit. The rockets (ability 2) can knock opponents off the peak, forcing them to re-climb.

Lore Context

The quest frames a rivalry between Frazzle Geargrinder (gnomish engineering, Alliance) and Blast Thunderbomb (goblin engineering, Horde). This mirrors the long-running gnome vs. goblin engineering rivalry that stretches back to vanilla WoW’s dual engineering specializations.

Ymirheim is the stronghold of the Ymirjar, the elite vrykul warrior caste who proved themselves in the ascension trials at Valhalas. The surrounding daily quests represent the Alliance and Horde’s joint campaign to weaken this critical Scourge outpost before the assault on Icecrown Citadel.

The jump jets do not launch so much as decide. You pick where you want to be, the machine commits, and somewhere over the middle of the arc it occurs to you that nobody consulted the parts. I went up over Ymirheim in a series of these, past frost vrykul who stopped what they were doing to watch a mechagnome carrying a night elf sail over their rooftops. Not one of them raised a weapon. There is no drill for it.

Frazzle heckled me the entire ascent from behind her woodpile.

“Hold on a second, you haven’t planted our battle standard yet! What’s the hold up?”

The summit is a heap of skulls. Vrykul, mostly, stacked by somebody a long time ago for reasons the Alliance has not troubled to learn. I put a blue and gold standard down in the middle of them and it snapped straight out in the wind.

“YOU DID IT! YOU DID IT!” Frazzle jumped and hugged me around the waist. “Oh, you’re just my favorite hero ever! You think you could come back again tomorrow?”

The Skybreaker’s officers were already drawing up something considerably less amusing in Joining the Assault.
