Quest Giver: Marshal Ivalius — inside Justice Keep at Crusaders’ Pinnacle, Icecrown

Walkthrough

After Crusaders’ Pinnacle is established, Marshal Ivalius appears inside Justice Keep. He is a dying soldier who was pulled from the Broken Front by the Argent Crusade. His last wish is for you to report to his commanding officer, High Captain Justin Bartlett, aboard the Skybreaker.

The Skybreaker patrols a route through Icecrown’s airspace, generally northeast of the central mountain between Mord’rethar and Aldur’thar. Fly up to the ship and land on the top deck. Bartlett is at the stern in the aft cabin with the yellow windows, one level down from the landing pad, and not below the main deck. Speak with him to complete the quest.

Alternate Access: If you skipped the Argent Vanguard chain, you can reach the Skybreaker via Preparations for War, picked up from Officer Van Rossem at Krasus’ Landing in Dalaran. This route requires level 77 and Cold Weather Flying. The Wrathgate questline is not a prerequisite.

Van Rossem puts you on a Skybreaker Cloudbuster (gnomish gyrocopter) that flies you directly to the ship. You can also use this NPC for free transport to the Skybreaker at any time after the initial trip.

Efficiency Tips

• The Skybreaker moves along its patrol route constantly. If you cannot find it, fly northeast of Ymirheim or check near Aldur’thar. It appears on your minimap as a friendly Alliance icon.
• Falling hazard: The lower decks have open hatches and gaps near the bomb bay. If you fall, you will drop to the glacier below and likely die unless you have Slow Fall, Levitate, or a parachute cloak.
• Orgrim’s Hammer warning: The Horde airship patrols a similar route. Avoid landing on it or flying too close, as Horde guards will attack on sight.

Notable NPCs Aboard the Skybreaker

• High Captain Justin Bartlett: Ship commander. Your primary contact and quest turn-in.
• Thassarian: The first death knight to rejoin the Alliance, encountered earlier in the Last Rites chain in Borean Tundra. He coordinates Alliance-Ebon Blade cooperation from the Skybreaker and gives several quests involving the Broken Front.
• Vindicator Maraad: Draenei paladin stationed aboard the ship. A relatively minor presence in WotLK, but later becomes a major character in Warlords of Draenor.
• Knight-Captain Drosche: Found on the topmost rear deck. Gives daily assault quests for Ymirheim.
• Absalan the Pious: Found near the main cabin staircase. Gives quests involving Saronite Mine slaves.
• Chief Engineer Boltwrench: On the lowest deck (engine room, prow end). Gives quests involving the Broken Front, including salvaging Alliance equipment.

Lore & Secrets

A Dying Soldier’s Last Words

Marshal Ivalius’s quest text is one of the more affecting breadcrumbs in Icecrown. He describes being overwhelmed at the Broken Front, falling in the chaos, and waking up at Crusaders’ Pinnacle with the Argent Crusade.

He knows he is dying and asks only that you tell his commanding officer he died a soldier of the Alliance. When you deliver the message, Captain Bartlett salutes and responds simply: “He was a damn fine soldier. Damn the Horde and damn the Scourge!” The quest quietly establishes the human cost of the ground war in Icecrown before you set foot on the airship.

Engineering Marvel

The Skybreaker is described as a feat of gnomish and dwarven engineering. It is propelled by multiple powerful propeller engines, armed with over twenty broadside cannons, and defended by battery guns fore and aft.

A steel eagle head on the bow serves as the ship’s figurehead. The lower decks house an armory, a launch platform for aerial missions, and a massive bomb (larger than a drake) in the ship’s lowest hold. The crew includes 7th Legion marines, plus a small army of dwarven and gnomish cannon operators on the gun decks.

The ship also carries two “air dinghies,” small flapping-wing lifeboats mounted on the exterior.

Alliance vs. Horde in the Skies

The Skybreaker and Orgrim’s Hammer periodically engage in scripted skirmishes during their patrol routes. The two gunships “often square off, focusing on the renewed hostilities between the factions instead of the threat of the Scourge.”

This faction tension escalates throughout the expansion, eventually culminating in the Gunship Battle encounter inside Icecrown Citadel, where the Skybreaker (under Muradin Bronzebeard) clashes with Orgrim’s Hammer around the spire. That raid encounter is often called the “Loot Ship” by players because of its relatively low difficulty.

Cross-Expansion Appearances

• Halls of Reflection (Patch 3.3): The Skybreaker arrives to rescue Alliance players fleeing the Lich King through the Hidden Passage at the end of the dungeon. After running from the Lich King across multiple platforms, the ship appears and extracts the party before the Lich King can catch them. (Horde players are rescued by Orgrim’s Hammer.)
• Icecrown Citadel (Patch 3.3): The Gunship Battle is the third encounter in the Lower Spire. Alliance players defend the Skybreaker while boarding Orgrim’s Hammer with rocket packs. Muradin Bronzebeard commands the ship during this fight, replacing High Captain Bartlett.

Thassarian and Koltira: Brothers Across Enemy Lines

• The Skybreaker houses Thassarian, while Orgrim’s Hammer houses Koltira Deathweaver. These two death knights are close friends who bonded during their time as Scourge servants, but now serve opposite factions. Their parallel placement on the rival airships foreshadows the tragedy of their story: in Cataclysm, they are forced to fight each other at the Battle for Andorhal, where Sylvanas Windrunner captures Koltira for showing “weakness” by cooperating with Thassarian. Koltira spends years imprisoned beneath Undercity until Thassarian helps rescue him during the Death Knight campaign in Legion.

Easter Eggs

• S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier Parallel: The Skybreaker’s resemblance to the Helicarriers from Marvel Comics, flying aircraft carriers kept aloft by four turbine engines that provide heavy air support to ground forces. The Skybreaker fills an identical tactical role: a mobile airborne command center with heavy armament, supporting ground operations in hostile territory.
• The Bomb Below Decks: The Skybreaker’s lowest hold contains a massive bomb ready to be deployed on the Scourge below. The sheer scale of it (described as larger than a drake), sitting in the belly of a gnomish airship, is a visual gag in itself, though any connection to Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove (1964) is unconfirmed.
