He gave me the report sealed, which I appreciated.
The errand runs the wrong way. Fordring is still at the Argent Vanguard, so I went south, back down the pass, out through the Valley of Echoes and along the road I have been fighting my way up since I got here.
That gap in the wall is where Dalfors stood telling me we could not keep the pace up, and it is quiet now. The field where the cocoons hung is bare. Somewhere on that ground I opened eight that held men and rather more that did not, and there is no sign left of any of it. The towers still have their guns retracted. The infirmary has beds free in it.
When I first came up that road, Entari could not finish a sentence about the shelling and a priest on the ramparts was shouting that judgment day comes. Now there is an architect drawing a keep.
Fordring was where he has always been, on the ledge at the corner of the base.
“Stand easy. What have you to report?”
He read the whole thing through without a word. It took some time. Everything in it is mine, and he does not know that and it does not matter, because Gustav’s name is on the cover.
“Your assistance has been integral in securing the front. The first true victory of this war is close at hand, which is why our next step is the most crucial. Rest assured, the Scourge will not give up without a fight. Your most difficult challenge awaits.”
