It Could Kill Us All

Quest 3 of 3 in the Frozen Heart Chain (Finale)
Both Factions • Icecrown to Crystalsong • Level 79 • Valley of Echoes
Retrieve 8 pieces of Crystallized Energy from the Unbound Thicket.
Anything Unbound in the thicket can drop it, so there is no specific mob to hunt, but Spitzpatrick's claim that every creature holds energy is optimism rather than data. Plan on twenty or more kills for your eight. The mobs pack tightly enough that AoE pulls pay off, and the ground around 79, 54 is dense. Take The Stone That Started A Revolution first, because its two ground pickups sit in exactly the same trees you will be clearing anyway.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Spitzpatrick said the crystals could kill everyone at the camp if they destabilized, and then called the arrangement a win-win without a flicker of doubt. Vikstone carried eight of them home in a pack on his back and thought about the landing on every step.

“Southeast of here, at the eastern reaches of Crystalsong Forest, is an area known as the Unbound Thicket. Within that thicket creeps all manner of life. One thing all of the affected creatures of the thicket share in common is their affinity for magical energy. Each of them holds pure, crystallized energy. Enough to kill us all should it ever destabilize!

Travel to the Unbound Thicket and kill its denizens for crystallized energy. We need fuel and they need to die. We call that a “win-win.””

-Crusade Engineer Spitzpatrick

Objective

LEVEL

79

Requires level

77

Crusade Engineer Spitzpatrick at the Valley of Echoes in Icecrown wants you to retrieve 8 pieces of Crystallized Energy.

  • Crystallized Energy (8)

Quest Giver: Crusade Engineer Spitzpatrick
Location: Crusaders' Pinnacle, Icecrown (Coordinates: 79.4, 72.3)
Target Mobs:
Focus on Unbound Tricksters and Unbound Ancients in Crystalsong Forest.
Best farming location: 79, 54, where these mobs are densely packed.
Drop Rate:
The drop rate for Crystallized Energy is notably low. Prepare for some grinding to gather all 10 items.
Pairing this quest with The Stone That Started A Revolution is highly recommended, as the mobs in the same area also drop quest materials for that objective.
Efficient Strategy:
Clear mobs in the ruins near 79, 59 for optimal drop rates.
Use AoE abilities if your class allows, as the area is densely packed with mobs.
Keep track of respawn rates, as farming multiple quests in this area can create bottlenecks if other players are present.
Quest Giver: Crusade Engineer Spitzpatrick – Valley of Echoes, Icecrown [83, 73]
Target Mobs: Best farming area is around [79, 54] where Unbound Tricksters and other mobs are densely packed. The ruins near [79, 59] are also solid, with Unbound Ents offering a slightly better drop rate.
Efficient Strategy: Pick up The Stone That Started A Revolution from Crusade Architect Silas before heading out.

Quest Giver: Crusade Engineer Spitzpatrick – Valley of Echoes, Icecrown [83, 73]

Objective: Collect 8 Crystallized Energy from creatures in the Unbound Thicket, Crystalsong Forest.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Getting There

  • Fly southeast from the Valley of Echoes into eastern Crystalsong Forest. Your destination is the Unbound Thicket, the crystal-covered eastern half of the zone.

Farming Crystallized Energy

  • The energy drops from virtually any Unbound creature in the thicket: Unbound Tricksters (crystal satyrs), Unbound Ancients (ancient protectors), Unbound Ents (treants), Dispirited Ents, and Unbound Dryads.
  • The drop rate sits around 35% across most Unbound and Shandaral creatures, so expect to kill roughly 20-25 mobs to collect all 8. The quest text promises every mob “holds pure, crystallized energy,” but that’s Spitzpatrick being optimistic.
  • Best farming area: around [79, 54] where Unbound Tricksters and other mobs are densely packed. The ruins near [79, 59] are also solid, with Unbound Ents offering a slightly better drop rate.

Efficiency Tips

  • Pick up The Stone That Started A Revolution from Crusade Architect Silas before heading out. It sends you to the same area for Crystalline Heartwood (ground spawns on the thicket floor) and Ancient Elven Masonry (at the Ruins of Shandaral). Farm the energy drops while collecting those ground items and you’ll finish both quests in one trip.
  • AoE classes have an advantage here. The mobs are tightly packed and mostly level 77-79, so pulling groups is efficient if your class supports it.
  • Watch for other players farming the same area. If the Unbound Thicket is contested, the Forlorn Woods to the west has additional Unbound Tricksters that also drop energy.
  • Be aware of Unbound Ancients using Entangling Roots (immobilizes for 4 sec) and Trample (AoE physical damage). Melee should avoid pulling too many Ancients at once.

Lore Context

The “Unbound” creatures are the remnants of Shandaral, an ancient Highborne city. Around 6,000 years before the Dark Portal, the Shandaral elves attempted a spell to draw power from the crystallized landscape after observing blue dragons do the same.

The spell backfired catastrophically, crystallizing every living creature in the region and transforming survivors into the maddened half-crystal beings you’re killing for this quest.

The crystal satyrs (like the Unbound Tricksters) look like satyrs but are not demonic. They’re classified as humanoids, transformed by arcane magic rather than the satyr curse. Spitzpatrick needs this energy to fuel a bomber for the Argent Crusade’s assault on Icecrown.

Phasing Note

  • Spitzpatrick only appears after completing The Last Line Of Defense and phases out permanently after The Battle For Crusaders’ Pinnacle. If you skip him, you cannot return for this quest later in the chain.

Trivia

  • Spitzpatrick’s TCG artwork (from the Wrathgate card set) was later used as the Mind Control Tech card art in Hearthstone, and as the header image for official Blizzard hotfix blog posts.

He said the part about killing us all in the same breath as the rest of it, at the same volume, and then waited to see whether I had any questions. I did not raise the obvious one.

Nothing in that thicket was born wrong. A city hung over Crystalsong long enough to bleed into it, and the wood went to crystal, and everything living underneath took up as much loose magic as a body can hold and then some. The sprites go about trailing it.

I was in the Ruins of Shandaral yesterday with my hands on masonry cut by the ones we exiled for this exact habit. Today I walked back into the same forest and spent an afternoon killing things that are full of what killed that city, so that a gnome can put it in a bomber.

I only note that I have now made the trip twice in two days, and that the second errand is precisely what the first errand was a warning about, and that nobody at the Valley of Echoes finds this worth a moment’s discussion.

The crystals came out of them still warm and still moving.

“Ah, this is perfect. The bomber should be up and running in no time.”

The timber was cut, the stone was quarried, and the bomber had fuel, which meant the Crusade had run out of reasons to keep waiting on the wrong side of the Breach and it was time to go Into The Frozen Heart Of Northrend.
