Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Find Darkspeaker R’khem
Fly to the Saronite Mines in the center of Ymirheim. The mine entrance is open, and R’khem is chained inside near the middle of the cave. He’s a large tentacled creature (a faceless one) and hard to miss. When you approach, he speaks directly into your mind, projecting a mix of euphoria and pain.
He asks you to kill the mine’s foreman and bring back the key to his chains.
Kill Foreman Thaldrin
Foreman Thaldrin is a frost vrykul elite with approximately 50,400 HP, located near R’khem inside the mine at [55, 59]. He has three abilities:
Thaldrin is fearable, rootable, snareable, and stunnable, making him far more manageable than the Group-3 tag suggests. Clear the Val’kyr Taskmistresses patrolling near him before engaging; they fly close to his position and can add during the fight if you pull carelessly.
Soloing: Despite the Group-3 label, the vast majority of classes can solo Thaldrin at 78+. His melee hits are moderate, and his CC vulnerability means casters can kite him freely while plate wearers can facetank with defensive cooldowns. Fear-capable classes (warlocks, priests) have an especially easy time. The main danger is not Thaldrin himself but the Taskmistress patrols adding mid-fight.
Turn In
Loot the Foreman’s Key from Thaldrin’s corpse and return to R’khem. He rewards you, then teleports away, making a noise your mind translates as laughter.
Efficiency Tips
Lore & Secrets
You Just Freed a Servant of the Old Gods
The entire quest is a con. Darkspeaker R’khem is an n’raqi (faceless one), one of the physical manifestations of the Old Gods’ will. Throughout the quest, he telepathically projects feelings of euphoria and trust into your mind to manipulate you into freeing him.
The quest text even flags this: “You can feel a pushing against your mind as if the creature is trying to coerce you.” After you hand over the key, he gives you boots and teleports away laughing. The quest rewards are named “The Darkspeaker’s” gear because he is rewarding you, not a faction quartermaster.
The quest name “Mind Tricks” has a double meaning. On the surface, it’s the Star Wars reference. But the real trick is on you: R’khem used Jedi-style mental manipulation to get a willing servant to do his dirty work, exactly the way Old God minions operate.
The Saronite Connection
The Saronite Mines are one of the darkest locations in Icecrown. Saronite is the crystallized blood of Yogg-Saron, the Old God imprisoned beneath Ulduar. Mining it drives people insane. The enslaved miners exhibit disturbing behavior: some attack you when freed, others try to run deeper into the mine to “find him,” some leap to their deaths, and others sing about hearing beautiful voices.
Thaldrin himself seems either too strong-willed or too oblivious to notice any of this, caring only about production quotas.
R’khem’s veins glow the same color as the liquid saronite flowing through the mine. The faceless ones are partially composed of the stuff.
Easter Egg: H.P. Lovecraft
R’khem’s name reads as “Ar-khem,” referencing Arkham from H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. This is fitting: a tentacled eldritch horror dwelling underground in a mine where workers are driven insane by whispers from a slumbering cosmic entity is textbook Lovecraft. The Darkspeaker card in Hearthstone: Whispers of the Old Gods is based on R’khem.

Vikstone's War JournalThe creature spoke directly into my mind, and its thoughts were painful and strange.

“Night elf-thing, I am in need of your assistance. Like your enslaved friends, I am a victim of the Lich King’s ymirjar and their avarice. When I rose from below to investigate the noises coming from this cavern they captured and chained me. Will you please help me? The foreman of these mines holds the key to my chains. Kill him!”
I rose from below.
It was not brought here. It came up, on its own, because it heard the digging. The ymirjar took it on the way and put it in irons, and it has been sitting in that chamber ever since, asking passers-by for a key.
Then it pushed against my mind, the way a man leans on a door he expects to give.
“You will be richly rewarded for your service to me.”
The foreman needed killing whatever else was true. So I told myself, and I went and did it, and the ymirjar in those tunnels came at me in the numbers they always do/ I put the mace and the axe through all of it and did not think about the chamber behind me.
The key was on the foreman.
Coming back, it laid warmth into my head before I had reached the chains. Gratitude. Something like pleasure, put there rather than felt.
“You will not regret unfettering me.”
Then a wave of euphoria with pain twisted through it, arriving together, and I could not have told you which half was the reward.
“Good… good! So that you know I am being fair, I will first give you your reward as I promised.”
I took the payment. It did not offer a second one. It came off the chain and went down, back the way it had come, and as it went it made a sound that arrived in my head as laughing.
The Lich King chained that creature. Of everyone in Icecrown, he is the only one who has ever had it in irons, and I let it out because it said please.
R’khem’s laughter was still in his skull on the flight out, and the next voice asking Vikstone for something wanted him watching a stretch of glacier where the Scourge kept appearing out of ground nobody had dug, on Blackwatch.
