Walkthrough

This is a short handoff quest. After turning in the Alliance Missive to Wyrmbane, he immediately briefs you on the crisis: Naxxramas has descended on Wintergarde, the lower village has been overrun, and civilians are trapped in the ruins. He orders you to report to Gryphon Commander Urik at the gryphon station within the Keep.

Walk to the gryphon platform area inside Wintergarde Keep and speak to Urik. He’ll point at a gryphon and give you a brief introduction to the gryphon rescue mechanics that the next quest uses. That’s it. Turn-in complete.

Efficiency Tips

• Don’t accept “The Hills Have Us” from Urik yet. Gryphon Commander Urik also offers this breadcrumb quest to Amberpine Lodge in Grizzly Hills. Accepting it immediately puts you on a gryphon and flies you out of Dragonblight with no confirmation prompt. Finish the Wintergarde chain first.
• Pick up other Wintergarde quests. While you’re walking to Urik, check the Keep for additional quest givers. Several parallel quest chains run through Wintergarde alongside this main one, including Commander Eligor Dawnbringer’s Naxxramas boss briefings in the courtyard.

Lore & Story Context

Wyrmbane’s briefing is the narrative setup for the entire Wintergarde siege. Pay attention to his dialogue, because it packs a lot of critical information into a few lines:

• Bolvar’s offensive at the Wrathgate. Wyrmbane reveals that Highlord Bolvar Fordragon has already launched an assault against Arthas at the Wrathgate. This is the first in-quest confirmation that the Wrathgate battle is actively happening while you’re questing here, and that your Wintergarde actions are running in parallel with Bolvar’s push.
• Naxxramas sent as retaliation. Arthas deployed Naxxramas specifically to punish the 7th Legion for Bolvar’s attack. The necropolis hovering above the Carrion Fields isn’t just a static presence; it arrived as a direct tactical response.
• Thel’zan the Duskbringer introduced. Wyrmbane names Thel’zan as the Scourge’s ground commander, while Kel’Thuzad commands from within the floating citadel above. This establishes the dual-threat structure of the entire chain: you’ll deal with Thel’zan through the ground campaign (quests 4 through 9) while the Naxxramas raid handles Kel’Thuzad separately.
• Wintergarde Village is gone. The lower village, now called the Carrion Fields, has already fallen. Your next quest will send you over these ruins on gryphon-back to rescue survivors who are still alive down there.

Easter Egg: The Princess Bride Connection

Thel’zan the Duskbringer is one of the best-hidden lore payoffs in WotLK. He was formerly Father Inigo Montoy, a trusted priest of the Argent Dawn and Brotherhood of the Light. His name is a reference to Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride.

The original Inigo Montoya sought to avenge his father’s death; in WoW, Inigo’s Copper Coin (fished from the Dalaran fountain) reads: “I wish I had my father back,” completing the homage.

Back in original WoW, players who defeated Kel’Thuzad in the level 60 Naxxramas raid were given his phylactery and tasked with delivering it to the Argent Dawn for destruction. The quest routed the phylactery through Father Montoy at Light’s Hope Chapel, and the Argent Dawn reported it never arrived.

Montoy betrayed everyone, returned the phylactery to Arthas, and was rewarded with undeath, becoming the lich Thel’zan. His treachery is the direct reason Kel’Thuzad was able to reform and Naxxramas could return to Northrend.

You’ll confront Thel’zan at the end of this chain in the Wintergarde Mausoleum, where Bolvar himself joins the fight and calls out Thel’zan by his old name, which sends the lich into a rage.

Cross-Expansion Connections

Naxxramas

• Classic WoW (Patch 1.11): Naxxramas originally floated above the Eastern Plaguelands as a 40-man raid. It was widely considered the hardest raid in the game, and very few guilds cleared it before The Burning Crusade launched.
• WotLK: Recycled as the entry-level 10/25-man raid in Northrend, now hovering over the Carrion Fields in Dragonblight. The lore justification for the move is exactly what this quest chain reveals: Kel’Thuzad’s phylactery was never destroyed.
• Shadowlands (Sanctum of Domination): Kel’Thuzad appears as a boss in Sanctum of Domination in the Maw, his phylactery finally destroyed for good during the encounter.
