Walkthrough

Pick Up the Quest

• After completing the Thassarian chain (ending with “Last Rites“) at Death’s Stand in Borean Tundra, Private Casey offers this quest.
• Private Casey explains that a courier carrying evidence of Cult of the Damned infiltration has gone missing en route to western Dragonblight.

Find Courier Lanson

• Travel to Stars’ Rest in western Dragonblight [29, 55].
• Courier Lanson is lying injured inside a tent directly behind Innkeeper Naohain at [28, 56].
• Speak with him to complete the quest. He explains he was ambushed by Anub’ar nerubians crossing into Dragonblight and is too injured to continue his mission to Wintergarde Keep.

Efficiency Tips

• Accept the follow-up immediately. Courier Lanson offers Of Traitors and Treason right away. If you leave Stars’ Rest without accepting it, the quest can disappear permanently. If this happens, skip ahead to Flight of the Wintergarde Defender at Wintergarde Keep to rejoin the chain.
• This is a breadcrumb quest, meaning it becomes unavailable if you’ve already reached Stars’ Rest or Wintergarde Keep through other means. If Private Casey has a greyed-out exclamation mark, you likely don’t need this quest and can pick up the chain directly in Dragonblight.
• Alternate entry point: Players who leveled through Howling Fjord instead of Borean Tundra can get “Of Traitors and Treason” directly from Captain Adams at Westguard Keep, bypassing this quest entirely. You only need one of the two breadcrumbs, not both.

Lore Context

• Private Casey is a member of Unit S, the squad that fought alongside Thassarian in Borean Tundra. His quest text references the Cult of the Damned spy discovered during that chain, connecting the events at Death’s Stand to the larger infiltration threatening Wintergarde Keep.
• The list Courier Lanson carries contains names of suspected traitors within the Alliance forces, and delivering it to High Commander Halford Wyrmbane at Wintergarde Keep kicks off one of WotLK’s longest and most significant quest chains, ultimately leading to the Wrathgate cinematic.
