“After the Scourge breached the south wall, I ordered Cavalier Durkon to investigate the town crypt. Moments ago I was handed his report. The undead that plague us are coming from two sources: the ruins of Wintergarde, now a breeding ground for Scourge, and our very own town crypt! Amidst the chaos and confusion the Scourge managed to get a necrolord inside the crypt.
In his message, Durkon requested assistance. You will find him and help him, Vikstone. The crypt is on the western border of the town square.”
-High Commander Halford Wyrmbane

Objective: Find Cavalier Durkon at the Wintergarde Crypt.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
From Wyrmbane’s position at Wintergarde Keep, head south into the town square ruins. The crypt is on the western edge of the square at [79, 53].
The easiest path is to go behind the inn (pass the left side of the building, between the wall and the inn), follow the wall to its end, then head left and descend the ramp by the tower where two infantrymen stand guard.
Continue south into the ruins and you’ll find Cavalier Durkon standing in front of the crypt entrance.
If you’ve already been clearing the town square for Rescue from Town Square and The Fate of the Dead, you’ve likely passed right by this area. The crypt entrance is further south and slightly west of the main geist-infested buildings.

Lore & Story Context
Wyrmbane’s briefing here is critical for understanding the full scope of Wintergarde’s crisis. He reveals the Scourge threat is coming from two fronts: the ruins above (which you’ve been clearing) and the town’s own crypt below. “
Amidst the chaos and confusion, the Scourge managed to get a necrolord inside the crypt,” he explains, meaning the enemy has been raising Wintergarde’s buried dead from underneath the Keep this entire time.
This is a pivotal moment in the chain. Everything up to this point has been about stabilizing Wintergarde from the surface. Now the story shifts underground, where you’ll discover the true source of the Scourge’s foothold: the Wintergarde Mausoleum and the lich Thel’zan the Duskbringer, who commands the siege from below.
Durkon’s greeting sets the tone for what’s ahead: “Oh brother, it’s a mess down there! I barely made it out last time.” He sizes you up and adds: “You got that crazy look in your eyes. Thankfully, you’re gonna need to be crazy to do what I’m about to ask of you.”

Vikstone's War JournalNothing says “welcome to Wintergarde” quite like investigating a compromised crypt.

The Scourge breached the south wall, and amidst the chaos, a necrolord slipped into the town crypt. Now Wintergarde fought a war on two fronts: the ruins above and the dead below. Cavalier Durkon had been sent to assess the situation. His report requested assistance, which in military parlance meant he was probably fighting for his life.
The floating citadel of doom overhead apparently wasn’t enough. We needed the local cemetery to join the siege.
I found Durkon at the crypt entrance. He looked me up and down.
“Oh brother, it’s a mess down there. I barely made it out last time.” He paused, studying my face. “You got that crazy look in your eyes. Thankfully, you’re gonna need to be crazy to do what I’m about to ask.”
Why would the Scourge bother with siege equipment when you could just wake up the dead already buried inside the town?
Durkon pointed into the dark below, where The Noble’s Crypt held whatever was feeding the Scourge its endless reinforcements and had already broken one scouting party.
