The Fate of the Dead

Alliance • Dragonblight • Level 72 • Wintergarde Keep
Kill 15 Vengeful Geists in the town square south of Wintergarde Keep.
Commander Lynore Windstryke at Wintergarde Keep. Head downhill south to the town square ruins around [79, 50]. Geists are everywhere, both inside buildings and roaming outside. The building at [80, 50] is the densest spawn point with fast respawns. Do this alongside Rescue from Town Square, since the geists you kill to free villagers count toward both quests. You'll hit most of the 15 kills while doing the 6 rescues, with only a few extra needed. Also grab Imprints on the Past (scrying orb upstairs at [78, 51]) for a three-quest trip.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Windstryke said to take no pity on them, but acknowledged they had once been capable of compassion and thought. Every citizen who had ever died in Wintergarde now rose from the crypt to swell the enemy's ranks, and mercy looked like a mace rising and falling.

“The town square, down this path, is overrun with the undead citizens of Wintergarde! Our own crypt provides a seemingly endless supply of soldiers for the Scourge to throw at us. Take no pity on them, though, Vikstone. While they were once mortal, capable of compassion and thought, they are now ravaging undead with only one purpose: our destruction.

Venture forth to the town square and deliver the vengeful geists to their maker. Give them peace.”

-Commander Lynore Windstryke

  • Pairs With: Rescue from Town Square (rescue 6 Trapped Wintergarde Villagers in the same area)

Walkthrough

Head downhill south from Wintergarde Keep into the town square ruins, centered around [79, 50]. Vengeful Geists are everywhere, both inside buildings and roaming outside. Kill 15 of them and return to Commander Windstryke.

The building at approximately [80, 50] is the densest spawn point. It has multiple geists across its floors, many of which are guarding the Trapped Wintergarde Villagers from the companion quest. Geists respawn quickly, so you can stay in one building and clear it multiple times rather than hunting across the entire square.

If you’re also working on Rescue from Town Square (and you should be), you’ll kill most of the 15 geists incidentally while freeing villagers. You may need a few extra kills beyond the 6 rescues to hit 15, but the fast respawns make this trivial.

Efficiency Tips

  • Always do this alongside Rescue from Town Square. Same location, same mobs. The geists you kill to free villagers count toward both objectives. Pick up both quests before heading down.
  • Also, grab Imprints on the Past if available. Its scrying orb is upstairs in the building at [78, 51], letting you complete three quests in one trip to the town square.

Lore & Story Context

Commander Windstryke’s quest text contains one of the more poignant moments in the Wintergarde chain. She acknowledges that the geists were once Wintergarde’s own citizens: “While they were once mortal, capable of compassion and thought, they are now ravaging undead with only one purpose: our destruction.”

She tells you to give them peace and “deliver them to their maker.”

Her completion dialogue shifts focus to the larger war: “My thoughts and prayers now turn to Lord Fordragon and our forces at the Wrathgate. We must persevere here, if only to buy them enough time to defeat the Lich King. Wintergarde cannot fall.”

This reinforces the strategic reality that every fight at Wintergarde is buying time for Bolvar’s forces at the Wrathgate.

The quest also confirms something important about the Scourge’s strategy at Wintergarde: the undead aren’t just coming from the Carrion Fields outside.

The Keep’s own crypt is being used as a source of fresh soldiers, which directly foreshadows the next quests in the chain, where you head underground to discover the Wintergarde Mausoleum.

The crypt beneath Wintergarde fed the Scourge an endless supply of soldiers. Every citizen who had ever died here, every grandmother and guardsman and child laid to rest in peaceful earth, now rose to swell the enemy’s ranks. This become a recruitment center for Arthas.

The geists came at me in waves and I gave them what Windstryke had asked me to give them.

Peace.

“Perhaps now they will ascend to the Light,” Windstryke said. She didn’t sound certain.

The geists kept coming from below, and the soldier sent into the crypt to find out why had not come back, so somebody had better Find Durkon!
