“You have done much to advance our efforts against the Scourge, Vikstone. In fact, the morale of all those who have come into contact with you soars! Such is your influence over the soldiers and citizenry of Wintergarde, ally. And because of you we are now prepared to go on the offensive! You are to report to Duke August Foehammer, across the Carrion Fields at Thorson’s Post, east of here.
Gryphon Commander Urik at the gryphon station has prepared a special gryphon to drop you behind enemy lines. Go now!”
-High Commander Halford Wyrmbane
Speak with Gryphon Commander Urik to secure a ride to Thorson’s Post. Report to Duke August Foehammer when you arrive at Thorson’s Post in Dragonblight.

Quest Giver: High Commander Halford Wyrmbane — Wintergarde Keep, Dragonblight
Turn In: Duke August Foehammer — Thorson’s Post, Dragonblight
Objective: Speak with Gryphon Commander Urik to secure a ride to Thorson’s Post. Report to Duke August Foehammer.
Walkthrough
Wyrmbane congratulates you on everything you’ve accomplished at Wintergarde and declares the Alliance is ready to go on the offensive: “You are to report to Duke August Foehammer, across the Carrion Fields at Thorson’s Post, east of here. Gryphon Commander Urik at the gryphon station has prepared a special gryphon to drop you behind enemy lines.”
Head to Gryphon Commander Urik at the gryphon station. Speak with Urik to get your ride. His dialogue: “The gryphon riders are standing 10 paces from us, friend. They’ll be giving you a ride to Thorson’s Post. Get going!”
You’ll be flown across the Carrion Fields to Thorson’s Post. When you arrive over the outpost, you’re ejected from the gryphon with a parachute. The rider announces: “Thorson’s Post, coming right up!” followed by “This is your stop, pal. Safe landing!”
You float down into the camp.
Find Duke August Foehammer at Thorson’s Post and turn in. His briefing immediately raises the stakes: “Thel’zan’s most powerful forces have made their way into the Wintergarde Mausoleum. They plumb its depths in search of corpses and souls to send against Wintergarde while Naxxramas rains down terrible Scourge plague machines, set to hold us at bay! We must strike now and hope that Lord Fordragon is able to hold out at the Wrathgate for just a little longer.”
Quick Facts
Lore & Story Context
The Shift from Defense to Offense
This quest marks a major turning point in the Wintergarde storyline. Everything up to this point has been reactive: defending the Keep from Naxxramas, rescuing villagers, investigating the mine, gathering intelligence.
Wyrmbane’s quest text explicitly acknowledges this shift: “Because of you we are now prepared to go on the offensive!” Being dropped behind enemy lines via parachute reinforces the transition.
Foehammer’s Briefing
Duke Foehammer’s completion text introduces two critical elements for the next phase:
First, Thel’zan the Duskbringer, the lich whose forces have been attacking Wintergarde. His agents are plundering the Wintergarde Mausoleum for corpses and souls, which directly connects to the Secrets of the Scourge/Noble’s Crypt questline you may have already completed.
Second, the urgency at the Wrathgate. Foehammer mentions that “Lord Fordragon is able to hold out at the Wrathgate for just a little longer,” establishing the ticking clock that drives the rest of the chain.
Bolvar Fordragon is at the front lines, and every quest you complete here is buying him time.

Vikstone's War JournalWyrmbane caught me before I could find a bunk.

“You have done much to advance our efforts against the Scourge,” he said. “In fact, the morale of all those who come into contact with you soars.” A rare smile crossed his weathered face. “And because of you, we are now prepared to go on the offensive.”
He pointed east, toward the Carrion Fields. “Report to Duke August Foehammer at Thorson’s Post. Gryphon Commander Urik has prepared a special gryphon to drop you behind enemy lines.”
The gryphon was white as fresh snow, bred for high-altitude work. Urik checked my harness twice before slapping the beast’s flank. We rose fast, banking east over the Carrion Fields. Below, the dead wandered in their thousands. Naxxramas hung on the horizon, a promise of worse to come.
The drop came without warning. One moment I was airborne, the next I was falling, chute snapping open above me as the gryphon wheeled back toward safe skies. I landed hard in the mud outside Thorson’s Post, rolled, came up with my hand on my weapon.
Duke Foehammer was waiting by the command tent. “Ah, the distinguished hero arrives. Welcome to ground zero. Allow me to bring you up to speed.”
Foehammer had a plan for breaching the mausoleum involving a steam tank, a short fuse, and driving straight through the Scourge line, which he was calling a Steamtank Surprise.
