Scrawled across the flesh-bound chapters of this tome are strange symbols and shapes that seem to have been scraped into the pages with a blade. You have no idea what is written, but you are certain that whatever it is, it must be important. Deliver the tome to Cavalier Durkon standing guard topside at Wintergarde Crypt.
-Flesh-bound Tome

Quest Giver: Flesh-bound Tome — looted from the book next to Necrolord Amarion at the bottom of the Wintergarde Crypt

Objective: Deliver the Flesh-bound Tome to Cavalier Durkon.
Quick Facts
Walkthrough
You should already have this quest. It triggers the moment you interact with the Flesh-bound Tome next to Amarion’s body at the bottom of the Wintergarde Crypt.
If you followed the walkthrough for The Noble’s Crypt, you grabbed the tome immediately after killing Amarion.
As soon as you accept the quest, the Shadow of Thel’zan the Duskbringer materializes and threatens you: “Where do you think you’re going with that, mortal? Put the tome down and I might spare you an eternity of anguish.”
You receive a debuff called Call of the Duskbringer that continuously spawns waves of undead until you escape the crypt.
Run. Do not fight the waves. Head straight back up the stairs the way you came. Keep climbing until you’re outside. Once you exit the crypt, the debuff drops and your character speaks aloud (one of the rare occasions this happens): something to the effect of being freed from Thel’zan’s enchantment.
Durkon is standing right outside at the crypt entrance. Turn in the quest immediately.

Lore & Story Context
The quest description paints a vivid picture of the tome itself: “Scrawled across the flesh-bound chapters of this tome are strange symbols and shapes that seem to have been scraped into the pages with a blade.”
You can’t read what’s written, but the Scourge’s violent reaction to you taking it proves its importance. The Shadow of Thel’zan’s appearance confirms that this is no ordinary spellbook. It’s significant enough that the lich commanding the entire Wintergarde siege personally intervenes (in projection form) to try to stop you.
Durkon’s completion dialogue captures the moment: “Whatever information is held in this book must be of great importance! I could hear the howls and wails echoing through the crypt as you made your escape! The High Commander must be notified!”
This quest bridges the main Wintergarde Keep chain (now complete) into the Thel’zan investigation arc.
The tome’s contents, once decoded, will ultimately reveal Thel’zan’s true identity as Father Inigo Montoy, the traitor who returned Kel’Thuzad’s phylactery to the Scourge, setting up the climactic confrontation with the lich himself.

Upon completion of this quest you will gain:
Vikstone's War JournalA flesh-bound tome. Nothing says “evil light reading” quite like books made from skin.

Whatever was written there, I couldn’t read it. But the way Amarion had guarded it told me it mattered.
I had barely lifted the tome when the shadows congealed.
The figure that emerged wasn’t fully there, more projection than presence, but the malice was real enough. A lich’s hollow voice echoed through the crypt.
“Where do you think you’re going with that, mortal? Put the tome down and I might spare you an eternity of anguish.”
Thel’zan the Duskbringer. I had heard the name in Wyrmbane’s briefings, the architect of Wintergarde’s suffering, hiding somewhere beneath our feet.
I ran.
The dead answered his call, pouring from alcoves and side passages as I sprinted up the spiral. My mace became a battering ram, clearing a path through the reaching hands and snapping jaws. The howls of the risen behind me grew louder.
Durkon’s eyes went wide when I burst from the crypt entrance, tome clutched to my chest like a stolen treasure.
“Whatever’s in that book must be important,” he said. “I could hear the screaming from up here.”
My growing collection of cursed reading materials.
The tome was safe and nobody at Wintergarde could read a word of it, which leaves the Mystery of the Tome to somebody who knows the language of the dead.
