The Chain Gun And You

Quest Giver: Ambo Cash — inside Wintergarde Mausoleum [85, 50], Dragonblight

Objective: Save 8 Injured 7th Legion Soldiers using the chain gun.

Walkthrough

Cash sets it up: “We’ve set up chain guns and barricades directly to the east and to the west. Our injured soldiers are hiding in both rooms, trying their best to not alert the mindless ghouls to their presence. Now that we have ammo, I need you to man one of the chain guns and use it to blast a path clear for our soldiers!”

This is a vehicle quest that takes place entirely inside the Mausoleum. The chain guns are positioned right next to Cash. There are guns on both the east and west sides.

Step 1: Mount the Chain Gun. Click one of the guns near Cash. Your action bar replaces with two abilities:

• [1] Fire: Shoots fireballs that deal splash damage in an area. No cooldown. Spam freely.
• [2] Call Out Injured Soldier: Summons a soldier from the back of the room who runs toward you through the ghoul-infested area.

Step 2: Call a Soldier. Press [2] to summon a soldier. The soldier spawns at the back of the crypt room and runs toward the gun with a fear symbol over their head. Ghouls will converge on them.

Step 3: Lay Down Covering Fire. Spam [1] while aiming at or near the soldier’s feet. The splash damage from the fireballs kills the ghouls around them. Keep firing until the soldier reaches safety at the barricade. That’s one rescue. Repeat 8 times.

Aiming the Gun

This is where most players struggle. The gun aims based on your camera angle, not a traditional reticle.

• Hold right-click (or both mouse buttons) and move the mouse to adjust where the gun fires.
• First-person view makes aiming significantly easier. Zoom all the way in.
• Aim at the soldier’s position and let the splash damage handle the ghouls around them. You don’t need to target individual mobs.
• If your camera follow style is set to “Always,” you may need to hold both mouse buttons to override it.

Tips

• Speed trick: The Call Out Soldier ability has a ~10 second cooldown, but you can summon multiple soldiers at once. Call several soldiers in quick succession and cover them simultaneously. You can summon all 8 at once using a macro that stacks the call command, turning it into a chaotic mass rescue.
• Ghouls can attack you on the gun. If ghouls reach the barricade, they’ll do direct damage to you. You CAN shoot them at point-blank range. Friendly NPCs near the gun usually help kill them, but don’t ignore incoming ghouls.
• Addon conflicts: Like all WotLK vehicle quests, action bar addons (Bartender, Dominos, etc.) frequently break the vehicle interface. Symptoms include: fire button not working, no cooldown appearing, soldiers not spawning. Fix: Log out, disable addons, log back in. This is the single most common complaint for this quest.
• Gun not doing damage? If fireballs appear but deal 0 damage, relog. This is a known intermittent bug.
• Alternative method (if gun is bugged): Some report summoning the soldier via the gun, then dismounting and killing the ghouls manually with regular abilities. Mages can use Arcane Explosion/Frost Nova, for example. The soldier still counts as saved when they reach the barricade, regardless of how the ghouls died.

Lore & Story Context

The Munitions Payoff

This quest is the direct narrative payoff of Scattered To The Wind. Cash couldn’t arm the chain guns until you recovered the ammunition.

Now that you have, the 7th Legion can mount a rescue operation for the soldiers who pushed too deep into the crypts. The quest chain builds logically: get ammo → arm guns → rescue soldiers → push toward Thel’zan.

Cash’s completion text references another campaign: “I haven’t seen heroics like that since Silithus!” This places Cash as a veteran of the War of the Shifting Sands/Gates of Ahn’Qiraj event, one of vanilla WoW’s most famous world events.

Cash has been fighting since the days of C’Thun.

His sign-off raises the stakes for what’s next: “We’ve gotten reports back from our scouts that Thel’zan is close.”

Easter Egg: Female Draenei /train Bug

Community reports confirm that female Draenei characters mounted on the chain gun will repeatedly perform the /train emote animation and sound throughout the quest. This is a known cosmetic bug specific to that race/gender combination. If it bothers you, mute emote sounds temporarily.
