Quest Giver: Plunderbeard (his corpse) — inside Wintergarde Mausoleum at [84, 54], Dragonblight

Turn In: Ambo Cash — Wintergarde Mausoleum entrance [85, 50]

Objective: Recover Page 4, Page 5, Page 6, and Page 7 of Plunderbeard’s Journal and return them to Ambo Cash.

Walkthrough

After finding Plunderbeard’s corpse (previous quest), his journal’s final entries were ripped out.

The quest text explains: “Whatever was written on the remaining pages of Plunderbeard’s journal must be recovered. Search the chambers located on the other side of this tunnel for Plunderbeard’s assailants. They must be the ones who tore the journal apart!”

The key phrase is “the other side of this tunnel.” From Plunderbeard’s corpse, the cave continues deeper. The path may look like a dead end because of vines and dim lighting, but there IS a passageway continuing past his body. Follow it through to emerge into a second section of the Mausoleum: the western crypts, filled with Dreadbone Constructs and Wailing Souls.

Both mob types drop the journal pages. Kill them until you have all four pages (4, 5, 6, and 7), then return to Cash at the eastern Mausoleum entrance [85, 50].

Tips

• The drop rate is extremely generous. You can get all four pages in 1-3 kills. Multiple pages commonly drop from a single mob. This is not a grindy collection quest.
• Don’t miss the path past Plunderbeard. This is the single most common complaint for this quest. The vine-covered tunnel past his corpse looks like a dead end. It isn’t. Keep going. If you’re struggling to see the path, try adjusting your camera or gamma settings.
• Alternate route (western entrance): The Mausoleum has two entrances. The main (eastern) entrance at [85, 50] is where Cash and the chain guns are. The western entrance at approximately [82, 50] leads directly into the crypt section where the Dreadbone Constructs and Wailing Souls live. If you need to return for more pages after dying, the western entrance skips the entire first section.
• Evade bug warning: Dreadbone Constructs will evade-bug quickly if pulled too far from their spawn points. They’ll reset, run back, and re-aggro on you. Kill them where they stand rather than trying to kite or pull them together.
• Fear debuff hazard: If another player triggers the quest An End and a Beginning (the Thel’zan boss fight at the end of this chain) while you’re in the western Mausoleum, you can receive a 2-minute fear debuff (“Terrifying Countenance”) that leaves you unable to act. If you’re mid-combat with Dreadbone Constructs when this happens, you will likely die. Be aware of other players in the area.
• Progress text flavor: Cash’s progress text when you return without all pages reads simply: “I certainly don’t feel like a winner…” Classic Cash.

Lore & Story Context

Cash’s Revelation: Good News and Bad News

Cash’s completion text delivers the chain’s pivotal intelligence drop: “There’s some good news and there’s some bad news. Which do you want first? Ah hell, why give you a choice? The good news is that if we can get Thel’zan’s phylactery, we can destroy him. The bad news is that the phylactery is on a rather large frostwyrm.”

The torn pages contained Plunderbeard’s discovery of where Thel’zan’s phylactery is hidden. A lich’s phylactery is the vessel containing its soul; destroying it is the only way to kill a lich permanently.

Thel’zan has hidden his on a frostwyrm named Icestorm, meaning the 7th Legion can’t just storm a chamber and smash it. They have to bring down a massive flying undead dragon first.

This sets up the next two quests in the chain (Chasing Icestorm: The 7th Legion Front and Chasing Icestorm: Thel’zan’s Phylactery), which deal with locating and taking down Icestorm to recover the phylactery before the chain’s climactic confrontation with Thel’zan himself.

The Mausoleum’s Two Halves

The Wintergarde Mausoleum is a sprawling catacomb beneath the Carrion Fields built by the original human inhabitants of Wintergarde Village.

It has a layout similar to Duskwood’s Dawning Wood Catacombs, split into eastern and western sections connected by a Scourge-dug tunnel. The eastern section (entered at [85, 50]) contains the embalming chambers and the 7th Legion holdout.

The western section (entered at [82, 50]) contains the large crypts where Dreadbone Constructs patrol. The tunnel through Plunderbeard’s cave is what connects them. Plunderbeard was killed partway through this connecting passage while trying to cross from one side to the other.

What Plunderbeard Died For

Plunderbeard’s intelligence, delivered at the cost of his life, provides everything the 7th Legion needs: confirmation that Thel’zan can be destroyed via his phylactery, the phylactery’s location on frostwyrm Icestorm, and the first hints of Thel’zan’s former identity.

His best rogue is dead, and the mission just got harder.
