Objective: Defeat Thel’zan the Duskbringer and report to Wyrmbane at Wintergarde Keep.

Walkthrough

Accepting the Quest

Speak with Yorik (already in front of you after completing Finality). His quest text sets the tone: “Every good story has a beginning and an ending. While your story is far from over, I’ll be damned if it’s not already turning out to be the stuff of legend!”

CRITICAL: Position yourself before accepting. After you accept, the scripted event starts automatically. Run behind the wall of 7th Legion soldiers near the tunnel entrance. This is the safest position.

If you stand near Yorik when the event triggers, spawning adds will land directly on top of you.

The Scripted Event (Three Phases)

Phase 1: Thel’zan’s Monologue

Yorik walks forward, places the phylactery on the ground, and announces: “It is this phylactery, Thel’zan’s phylactery, that is the key to this victory!”

The gateway between the two pillars activates with red lightning and smoke. Thel’zan the Duskbringer (Level 73 Elite) emerges and casts Terrifying Countenance, which freezes every player and NPC in the room. You cannot act during this phase.

Thel’zan monologues about his transformation:

• “I was… once like you. Mortal. Soft. Only flesh and bone. WEAK AND TIMID!”
• “Our lord, Arthas, saw in me the frailty of man.”
• He recites the Lich King’s promise: “Serve me in life and I will promise to rend the weakness from your soul.”
• His critical boast: “Were it not for me, the glorious dread citadel of Naxxramas may never have returned to Northrend.”

This last line is the key confession. He returned The Phylactery of Kel’Thuzad to Arthas, allowing the archlich to reform and bring Naxxramas back to Northrend. The entire Wintergarde siege, the floating necropolis above the Carrion Fields, the undead pouring out of the Mausoleum: all of it traces back to this one man’s betrayal.

Phase 2: Bolvar’s Arrival and the Identity Reveal

Highlord Bolvar Fordragon charges down the ramp into the summoning chamber. He confronts Thel’zan directly, listing the virtues he once embodied: “Honor, courage, compassion and justice! Those were once the virtues you fought for as a cleric of the Argent Dawn, Thel’zan.”

Then the reveal: “So how, then, did Father Inigo Montoy, bastion of virtue for the Argent Dawn, become the embodiment of that which he hated most?”

Thel’zan’s reaction is immediate and violent: “THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME YOU UTTER THAT NAME, PALADIN! Breathe your dying breath!” He summons waves of Minions of Thel’zan.

Veteran Player Callback: If your character completed The Great Masquerade (the vanilla Onyxia attunement questline where you helped Windsor unmask Lady Prestor in Stormwind’s throne room), Bolvar recognizes you personally: “Good to see you still alive and kicking. Don’t think that I’d forgotten what you did for me in Stormwind, oh so long ago.”

Phase 3: The Fight

Bolvar casts Fordragon’s Resolve on all players and NPCs, breaking the Terrifying Countenance stun, granting +10,000 HP, and increasing melee, ranged, and casting speed by 35%. The buff stacks with Heroism/Bloodlust.

The actual combat is heavily NPC-assisted. Bolvar and the 7th Legion soldiers engage Thel’zan and his minions. Thel’zan’s combat abilities include Chains of Ice (root), Frost Armor (melee slow), and Frostbolt.

He periodically summons additional minions with “Rise, my minions!” and “Attack now, my minions!”

You need to hit Thel’zan at least once to ensure kill credit. Stand back and hit the lich at least once. The NPCs can handle the rest.

After Thel’zan falls, Bolvar declares: “Victory for the Alliance! You have saved Wintergarde! With Thel’zan’s filth washed away, the 7th Legion will easily clean up the remaining Scourge. When you are done here, report to Angrathar!”

Return to Wyrmbane at Wintergarde Keep to turn in. His completion text: “Wintergarde is saved because of you. To think that one person could so swiftly turn the tides of battle is hard for most to comprehend; yet here we are, victorious!”

Tips

• Stay behind the soldier wall. After accepting, immediately move to the tunnel entrance area and position behind the line of 7th Legion Elites. This keeps spawning adds from landing on top of you.
• If you die, do not release. Stay at your corpse. NPCs can and frequently do finish the fight without player participation. 
• Corner trap warning: If you are feared/pushed into one of the small posts in the corner of the chamber, you can get stuck. Smaller races may avoid this issue. Avoid standing near corners.
• Event already in progress: If another player triggered the event before you, you may need to wait for it to complete before starting yours.
• 7th Legion waiting dialogue: If you enter the chamber before accepting the quest, the Elite soldiers have ambient lines: “Let it be known that it has been an honor and a privilege fighting alongside all of you” and “If I don’t make it back to Wintergarde, let my family know that I did my best and that I love them.” These only play while they wait for you to start the event.

Lore & Secrets

Father Inigo Montoy: The Full Betrayal

This quest completes one of WotLK’s most layered villain reveals.

Father Inigo Montoy was a human priest of the Brotherhood of the Light, stationed at Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands. He was a respected cleric of the Argent Dawn who fought the Scourge and helped restore the Vestments of Faith priest tier set from desecrated armor recovered inside Naxxramas.

When players defeated Kel’Thuzad in the original level-60 Naxxramas raid, the archlich’s phylactery dropped as a quest item. The quest, The Fall of Kel’Thuzad, instructed players to deliver it to Father Montoy at Light’s Hope Chapel for “payment.”

The quest text itself hinted at something wrong: “Your better judgment dictates that you destroy the phylactery, preventing the lich from ever reforming. Thankfully, you seldom listen to that internal voice of reason.”

Montoy received the phylactery with transparent greed: “Oh yes, you will be rewarded dear boy. You will be greatly rewarded. Give it here.” Many vanilla players suspected something was off, but the storyline went dormant for years.

In WotLK, the payoff arrived. Montoy never delivered the phylactery to the Argent Dawn. He had already been corrupted by the Lich King. He returned the phylactery to Arthas, allowing Kel’Thuzad to regenerate and bring Naxxramas back to Northrend.

As a reward, the Lich King transformed Montoy into the lich Thel’zan the Duskbringer.

The item you’ve been carrying since Quest 8, Thel’zan’s Phylactery, has flavor text that confirms the connection: “There are initials etched on the side: I.M.”

An End And A Beginning

It is an end to the Wintergarde siege and the Thel’zan threat. It is a beginning of the road to Angrathar the Wrathgate, where Bolvar will lead the charge against the Lich King. It is also an end for Father Inigo Montoy’s story, and a beginning for the player’s transition from local heroics to the central conflict of the expansion.

Bolvar’s directive after victory points the way: “When you are done here, report to Angrathar!”

Easter Eggs

The Princess Bride Reference: Father Inigo Montoy’s name is a direct reference to Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride (1987), famous for the line: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” The WoW version inverts the character: where Montoya spent his life seeking righteous revenge, Montoy spent his life pretending to fight evil while secretly serving it. Thel’zan’s enraged reaction when Bolvar speaks the name mirrors Montoya’s obsessive repetition of his own, but twisted: Thel’zan doesn’t want to avenge his name; he wants to destroy it.

Inigo’s Copper Coin: In the Dalaran fountain (part of the A Penny For Your Thoughts achievement), players can fish up Inigo’s Copper Coin. The wish references the most emotional line from The Princess Bride: when Montoya finally defeats his father’s killer and says, “I want my father back.”

The coin’s existence in Dalaran suggests that even as a lich, some fragment of the man Inigo once was still yearned for what he lost.

Noth the Plaguebringer Callback: During combat, Thel’zan says: “You have fought hard and come from the distant reaches of this world to face the Duskbringer.” This closely mirrors Noth the Plaguebringer‘s line in Naxxramas: “You have fought hard to invade the realm of the Plaguebringer.”

A deliberate echo connecting Thel’zan to the necropolis he helped return to Northrend.

Cross-Expansion Connections

Bolvar Fordragon’s Arc Begins Here

This scripted event is the first time players fight alongside Bolvar in Northrend. The confident paladin who charges into the summoning chamber and single-handedly breaks Thel’zan’s terror is about to walk a road that spans four expansions:

• Dragonblight (Wrathgate): Bolvar leads the Alliance charge at Angrathar. Grand Apothecary Putress unleashes the New Plague, killing Alliance, Horde, and Scourge indiscriminately. Bolvar is exposed to the plague. Red dragons incinerate the battlefield. Bolvar survives but is horribly transformed by the combination of plague and dragonfire.
• Icecrown Citadel: Players discover Bolvar alive but charred, tortured by Arthas atop the Frozen Throne. His will never broke. After Arthas’s defeat, Bolvar demands Tirion place the Helm of Domination on his head: “There must always be a Lich King.” He becomes the Jailer of the Damned.
• Legion: As the Lich King, Bolvar secretly allies with the Knights of the Ebon Blade, commanding the raising of the new Four Horsemen.
• Shadowlands: Sylvanas Windrunner shatters the Helm of Domination, freeing Bolvar. He becomes Highlord of the Knights of the Ebon Blade and reunites with his daughter Taelia, who believed him dead.

The man who tells you “Victory for the Alliance!” in this chamber will never know another moment of uncomplicated triumph.

Note: In original WotLK, completing this chain eventually led to the Battle for the Undercity scenario (post-Wrathgate). That scenario was removed in Cataclysm but remains available in WotLK Classic.
