Wyrmbane sends you to join Bolvar at the Alliance forward base near Angrathar the Wrathgate: “With the Naxxramas war machine stopped dead in its tracks, the time has come for you to help our forces at Angrathar, the Wrathgate.”
Getting There: Wyrmbane says “take the north gate out of town and travel north by northwest.” Ignore this. From Wintergarde Keep, the actual direction is west-northwest. Fordragon Hold is in the extreme northwestern corner of Dragonblight, nestled against the mountains bordering Icecrown.
Fastest route: Fly to Stars Rest (if you have the flight path) and ride north. Fordragon Hold is just up the road. If you don’t have Stars Rest, fly to Wyrmrest Temple and head northwest, or ride overland from Wintergarde Keep following the road west.
FLIGHT PATH TIP: If you haven’t grabbed the Wyrmrest Temple flight path yet (center of Dragonblight, [59, 54]), pick it up on the way. Your next quest sends you directly to Wyrmrest Temple. Having the flight path saves a long ride back.
Bolvar is at the very top of the hill inside Fordragon Hold [37, 23]. The front entrance to the Hold is at approximately [42, 29] if approaching from the east. Be cautious of elite and high-level undead in the surrounding area.
Lore Context
Wyrmbane’s Commendation
Bolvar’s completion text is surprisingly personal for a travel quest: “This commendation is only given to those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in the name of the Alliance. I could count the number of times I’ve handed this one out on one hand, and never has anyone been more deserving than you!”
Bolvar is formally recognizing the player for the entire Wintergarde operation. Hence the 500 reputation reward, a significant jump from the +10 you’ve been getting from the last several quests.
The Wintergarde Mine Connection
Bolvar then connects two threads from earlier in the zone: “Now, let us look upon the Wrathgate. Does it look familiar? It should. That strange ore you found at the Wintergarde Mine is exactly what the Wrathgate is made from. We will find its weakness and expose it for all to see!”
This references the Wintergarde Mine questline earlier in Dragonblight, where players discovered a mysterious ore in the tunnels beneath Wintergarde Keep. That same material comprises Angrathar the Wrathgate, the massive Scourge fortification blocking passage into Icecrown.

“I’ll find it.”
He nodded, then added, almost softly: “Light protect you.”
Fordragon Hold emerged from the white, its walls thick with soldiers and war machines. The perimeter guards tracked my approach but didn’t challenge me. Word of Wintergarde’s liberation had arrived ahead of me.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon stood at the hold’s overlook, gazing north toward something dark on the horizon.
“This commendation,” he said, pressing a medal into my hand, “is only given to those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in the name of the Alliance. I could count the number of times I’ve handed this one out on one hand, and never has anyone been more deserving than you.”
“I did what needed doing, Highlord. Nothing more.”
“That’s what makes it worthy.” He turned back to the overlook and gestured north. “Now. Let us look upon the Wrathgate. Does it look familiar?”
I followed his gaze. The structure loomed on the horizon, a gate of dark metal in the mountainside. Its surface gleamed with an oily sheen I recognized instantly.
“That’s saronite,” I said. “The ore from Wintergarde Mine.”
“Exactly what it’s made from. The Lich King built his fortress door from the same cursed metal his servants were mining beneath our feet. Whatever properties that ore possesses, he wanted them guarding his domain.”
The wind cut across the overlook, carrying a faint stench. Behind the Wrathgate, somewhere in the frozen dark, the Lich King waited.
“No fortress is without its weakness,” Bolvar said. “Even one forged from saronite. And we will find it.”
Medals meant nothing if we didn’t live to remember earning them. The end of the war was coming.
Bolvar wanted allies who understood dragonfire and old power, and sent him south to Wyrmrest where Alexstrasza held court above a war eating every flight, for an Audience With The Dragon Queen.
